When the printer is not being used and is left turned on it will perform maintenance to ensure the ink does not run low. If you leave the printer turned off, the cartridges will dry out faster. There is a lot of science behind printing technology and the differences between cartridge/printhead designs as well as pigment and dye based inks. If you often do not print very much I recommend checking into the HP Instant Ink replacement service where you will never have to buy ink for the printer ever again. 50 pages or less a month is $2.99 per month. If you do not print all your pages that month the unused pages roll over.
