Q: Is this corner of the world in English or Japanese? Is the dvd sold in stores?
A: The original film in is Japanese. This DVD includes English-translation subtitles as well as an English-translation dub. It also includes the original Japanese-language audio, which I would highly recommend. I have not seen the DVD in stores but I cannot assert whether any stores sell it or not. I was very pleased with the results of my decision to purchase this DVD online from Best Buy.

“In This Corner of the World” is directed by Sunao Katabuchi and based on the Japanese manga “Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni”, which has also seen a live-action tv miniseries adaptation as well there. It follows the time in the life of Suzu who moves away from her family in Hiroshima, to live with another she has married into, in Kure. As the war in the Pacific is drawn to the Imperial naval base there, life suddenly becomes full of harrowing experiences. Though it is a slow, “slice of life” drama, it’s period setting in Japan during World War II, makes it quite a life affirming one too. If you have appreciated Studio Ghibli’s “Grave of the Fireflies” from director Isao Takahata, this film may compliment it perfectly. The bonus mini manga, containing a section from the source manga, and special features, along with a low price, combine to make this a rewarding purchase to add to your film library. May it add enrichment to your life as well!

Its a great movie, slow and makes the characters fleshed out, then makes you sad for how much pain and suffering they go through in the war, yet they always stay positive and happy.
