Based on a true story and sticking closely to the facts, "Just Mercy" tells the story of an idealistic Harvard lawyer Bryan Stevenson (convincingly portrayed by Michael B. Jordan, who heads a cast that includes Brie Larson, Rafe Spall, and Tim Blake Nelson) who sets up office in Alabama in the late 1980s to appeal death row convictions. One of his first cases involves the dubious conviction of Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), whose case becomes a lightning rod for the systemic racism of American justice as it is applied to Blacks in the south. The film eschews the kind of melodramatic trappings common to this kind of "legal thriller" (there are no fiery courtroom histrionics or surprise confessions on hand), but that only serves to emphasize the maddening injustice of what was perpetrated by the state against an innocent man. In this age of social protest against the unequal application of the law following the deaths of several Black Americans across the country, "Just Mercy" couldn't be timelier or more compelling.

I read the Book when the movie first came out. The Author of the book did an excellent job exposing the Racsim, Prejudice and unfairness of the Criminal Justice System. The movie was missing a lot. But i did enjoy it. It also exposed at lot about the South. And the Racsim and Prejudice is still going strong in this Nation. The Author of this Book put in a lot of work to free the Innocent. We need more Attorneys like him. So people can't even get a fair trial. I almost cried when i read in the Book that they put this man on Death Row before he was even given a trial. They took this man's life.

I saw this on Netflix disc rental and knew that this was a must have for my collection. Acting, script, direction were all worth the 5 stars. Michael B. Jordan did an excellent job in this role and made it very believable. The disc 'extras' about the real people this story is based on was worth the watch. Very few movies of this caliber under an "R" rating come out each year, so when one like this does comes out - it is a real treasure.
