Excellent Product, Minimal Service From Best Buy

Best Buy does not display this ice maker in very many places, nor do they install it-you are pretty much on your own-they have it and can get it to you, but that's about it. You will not likely find any informed sales help for this machine either. We bought this Kitchenaid Ice Maker primarily because of the kind of ice it makes-the little square, clear "chicklet" ice which works so well in most drinks. We had a ten year old GE Monogram ice maker which failed, and which made the same kind of ice, but GE no longer makes a similar model-this Kitchenaid is about the only one left if you want this particular type of ice. The ice maker itself is excellent. It does make ice maker noises when it fills, drains and drops ice, but all ice makers make these noises-if you expect it to be silent don't buy this or any other ice maker. Ice makers are refrigerators and so they will also produce heat-if you expect it not to vent warmer air produced by the refrigeration process, don't buy it. I'm amazed at people who expect any ice maker to be silent and externally cold. Not gonna happen. This ice maker comes with a drain pump already installed in the ice maker (a plus if you do not have a gravity drain), and not as a separate kit as suggested by Kitchenaid documentation. So, if you want to use a gravity drain you'll need to re-route the drain lines and the electrical connections and/or also just remove the drain pump and use the gravity drain. Best Buy does not install this machine, nor do they refer company recommended installers. They basically roll up to your house, roll in the machine, drop it where you ask and beat feet. You will need to know how to install it yourself or you'll need to have a plumber or other installer who knows what they're doing. Ice maker installation is not a universal installer or plumber skill-be careful if you hire someone-if they screw it up you can flood your kitchen or wet bar pretty easily. I installed this machine myself and it wasn't hard, but rerouting the drain and electrical from the included drain pump was pesky. I also purchased a 5/8" internal diameter reinforced vinyl drain hose to extend the drain reach to the gravity drain-the included line is too short, in my opinion, and more designed to connect the drain pump. You will also need an ice maker supply line (also NOT included)-the same kind which hooks up a household refrigerator ice maker. If you do not have the supply line, you can't install the machine. This ice maker also has an integrated, changeable water filter, which is excellent and which makes a big difference in ice quality and flavor. But, the machine is NOT delivered with a filter, and the filters are not all that commonly available, so you'll want to pre-order the filter and have it if you expect to hook up the machine and use it. (look at the manual-get an ICE 2 type filter-Whirlpool and Kitchenaid) This machine makes ice which looks and tastes better than our old GE ice, even though both machines are internally similar-the positive difference is the Kitchenaid water filter. The machine comes with an internally stored scoop, and the interior bin door opens and closes automatically when you open and close the outer door. It has a light which comes on when you open it, but you don't really need a light. In summary, excellent machine sold at a good discounted price by Best Buy, with an integrated filter and drain pump (most people will need the drain pump, so its inclusion is a plus), but you'll be pressed to find one you can look at, and you'll probably not find a knowledgable salesperson at your local Best Buy. And, Best Buy will do nothing more than deliver, so you're on you own after you buy it. Remember to buy the water filter ahead of time-the machine will not make ice without it, and have a supply line handy. Overall, I'm very happy we got this machine-it's working perfectly and we love it. I don't expect this or any other ice maker to be very reliable, so I'm glad Best Buy offers Geek Squad warranty extensions at a very good price. Even one service call on common problems with this type machine will make the Geek Squad warranty a true bargain. Our experience with ice makers is that they certainly require regular maintenance, they break more often than other appliances and they are moderately difficult to clean. For this difficulty you get mass quantities of very high quality 'clear' ice. This machine makes and stores a LOT of ice. We love it, but we're realistic about what it will do and not do. I might finally add that I called Kitchenaid customer support in Michigan before I bought this and asked some pretty technical and detailed questions about the machine and the install. The representatives I got were promptly available, knowledgable, helpful and completely outstanding. A BIG plus for a potentially complicated appliance and I like the "Made in the USA" product support. I would consider Kitchenaid support a significant plus in owning this machine.

The time had come to replace our 8 year old Kitchen Aid ice maker at our office. After much research, we decided to stick with the newest, comparable Kitchen Aid model and BOY what an upgrade! This newer model is so quiet, efficient and sleek in design, all of which are important as it is located in a much-used conference room. **Be sure to purchase the water filter prior to installation (as other reviewers have noted) as there is not a prompt to do so in any of the product information listed on-line.** The ice maker is freestanding, but "built" into our cabinetry adjacent to a sink. It took us about 45 minutes to remove the old appliance and install the new (we read the instructions first) and it worked like a dream from the start. Our office is very happy with the purchase and feel the product is well worth the price.

    Horrible Customer Service

Busty Buy sent two installers who arrived and said they were not trained to install the ice maker. After spending hours on hold and on the phone with Best Buy, we gave up and paid a plumber $200 to install the ice maker, but since Best Buy had not included the filter, we had to call the Best Buy customer service line. After 40 minutes of hold time and bouncing from department to department, they said I would have to contact a store. We also paid for them to haul the old ice maker off, which Best Buy has still not done. Never buy anything from Best Buy. Get a local company that has qualified installers and service. Best Buy is a joke. After all this, we are still waiting on a filter to be delivered from Amazon so I am not sure if the ice maker even works.

Just had installed by professional plumber in a new basement bar build: surprise! Before you can even use the icemaker, you have to purchase the $40 filter it requires to work. You'd think one would be included on an item with this ticket price.... And of course no nearby stores have it in stock, so 3 more days I wait to have ice. Will update review if I have issues with it later.

This ice maker boasts a hefty price tag but we have been very pleased. It is quiet (our old one sounded like an airplane about to take off) and seems to be working like a champ. So far it is great!

Seems to be working fine. We have only had it installed for two days but we had one like it before. It lasted about 8 years.
