Good replacement VCR

I bought this as a replacement for an old VCR that died. The VHS video quality is acceptable, and the DVD video output is pretty good (all things considered after being spoiled with HD output these days). It has lots of output options but one issue is I am not able to have the VCR go to regular single cable video out and the DVD go to ypp/composite unless I get an audio splitter because there is just one audio out (I don't have an amp or tv with coax audio) (this is maybe more an issue with my TV's input scheme) So for now I am just running DVD on regular video out. Not a big deal, the kids use this for kids videos, I use my PS3 next to it for upscaled videos and blu-ray discs.
The case is fairly tall for its contents however the unit is not heavy. The controls are easy for kids to understand, and the VCR commands are responsive and a great improvement over the old vcr.
This was a refurb item, so far so good, no quality issues. Very inexpensive for what I needed.

Technology going backwards?!

Doesn't have a tuner, so unless you have a cable box to plug it into, you'll need to shell out another $80-100 for an external tuner. (If you don't understand what I mean, there is no place to connect cable TV to the VCR/DVD.)
You cannot record one channel and watch another! No kidding. It even says it in capital letters in the manual. My older Magnavox is better than this. VCRs I bought 20 years ago had this capability.
Wish I could rate it zero stars.

A great Christmas Present

I bought this as a Christmas present for my Mother and it seems to be working flawlessly, I gave it to her in the middle of December 2010. It was very easy to setup and I was able to easily run her external digital TV receiver through it. My Mother has a large VHS collection, as well as DVDs, and this machine allows her to play either. Just a forewarning to anyone buying this machine, it does not have any type of TV tuner, it will require a external digital tuner or a TV with one built in. The bad reviews about this machine not having a tuner cracks me up. Folks think that a $40 dvd/vcr player is going to have a $40 digital tuner built in.

Not as great as advertised

I bought this VCR/DVD because our old VCR went out but when I got it home to hook it up I found that to record I need to spend $7.50 a month just to get a converter box from my cable company. And I need to have a RF add on because the refurbished VCR/DVD doesn't come with the connection ports for cable. Unfortually for me there isn't alot of options because you can't seem to find just VCR's anymore if you want to record your tv you have to pay either the cable company or another company to record what just a few years ago you could do for FREE!!!!

I had the silver model of this DVD/VCR for around 5 or 6 years before it died.I purchased this version thinking that Magnavox was a great brand and how awesome my previous one was.Boy was I wrong. It worked a week then would not power on.I sent it back to the manufacturer and it won't play dvds.I've sent it back again to get a 3rd one and I'm guessing it's not gonna work either.DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS GARBAGE PEOPLE! It is the worst!

I put a casset into the machine and it would not play. When I tried to eject it the machine held the tape. It ruined my tape. The machine was junk.

I bought this as a replacement for my old one and what a poor job it did. The picture was ok But after four weeks the dvd player stopped working. The VCR still works but I have a two year old who uses it all the time so I needed something that was going to last. Trust me don't buy this product.

Bought this a refurb in order to transfer VHS to digital. Easy to set up and use, but after about a month the tape transport began to squeal and picture became distorted. It's a shame, because there aren't too many VHS players on the market anymore....
