Best Android streamer but HDR is suspect

Relatively quick compared to other boxes and I like how its native Android so it runs most if not all Android apps including YouTube (4K which Apple TV doesn't), Netflix, VLC, Twtich, Amazon, Kodi etc. Bluetooth remote is slow/laggy regardless of how many updates they've thrown out it which I've had at least 3 so far. Lots of settings to manipulate which Google diehards may like but if things aren't working it can be frustrating figuring out where everything is. I've not experienced the video game side of the Shield so I would say for a sale price it's worth it just for streaming but if you don't want the video game side I wouldn't pay full price. Not to mention Kodi has almost completely died within the last week due to all the issues so I wouldn't buy it based on Kodi alone. Now for the HDR10 issue(s). I have a new 4K UHD HDR TV, new 4K UHD receiver, and new HDMI cables all less than 30 days old but HDR10 does not appear to work. My Apple 4K uses HDR10 as soon as it boots up and the TV displays this. Nvidia doesn't show HDR10 being used in any app. I've had a ticket open with Nvidia for about two weeks now and sent them screenshots of my Apple 4K TV showing HDR10 and their Shield showing non-HDR10. Nvidia has verified all my settings are HDR10 compliant on the Shield but the TV doesn't recognize it regardless of what the Shield says and let me tell you that HDR10 makes difference. I would rather have HDR10 than 4K currently but I feel I may have stumped Nvidia. So is the Shield actually HDR10? If it is why does my TV not see it as HDR10 yet my Apple TV is HDR10 as soon as it boots up? My Shield settings reflect what HDR10 is from a technical standpoint so theoretically it's running as HDR10 but it's not reporting this to my TV so it's 50/50 performance as of now. If you can forgive the questionable remote and find it on sale I would recommend it as a quality streaming device that get's updates regularly. I would NOT recommend the Pro version however since you can add an external drive to the basic 16gb.

        Hi,
We’re sorry to hear about your issues. We can help you out. HDR10 is supported on SHIELD. Each HDMI port needs to be individually enabled for HDR on your TV (and not all TVs support HDR from every port). Please reach out to us at SHIELD-BBY-support@nvidia.com and include a link to this review so that we can help you out. Also we can help you solve your remote issues. We have a final remote update releasing this week. Best Android Streaming box out there

I've gradually upgraded my streaming "boxes" from the Amazon Fire Stick to the Fire TV to now this. If you've cut the cord (i.e. canceled cable) you need a streaming option for your TV. Whether it be a PC or dedicated unit like the nVidia Shield, you only need internet and subscription service of choice (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) The Shield is very fast and is a full Android OS. If you're used to the fire stick or other Amazon streaming devices, they are an android platform, but has some Android functionality removed to make the the whole package more affordable to the masses. NVidia did not do that. You get a 4k capable, geforce experience ready, game streaming device. If you're looking for the best, all in one streaming device, this is the best bang for the buck. The next step up would be a mini-PC that has more overhead, maintenance and setup involved. Now you're probably wondering why the 4-stars if this is so great. In my experience with this, I have noticed a reoccurring issue with my particular 4k LG TV. If I happen to turn on the shield before I turn on the TV, I get an error when playing some videos. Has something to do with the HDMI "handshake" that happens between the device and the TV. Turning on the TV BEFORE the Shield, no error. If the error does happen, I have to turn the TV off then on again, and the error goes away. I wish I could only take half a star away but alas, no can do on BB's reviews. Hope this was helpful!

I recently purchased the Shield with the hope that it could replace my aging Roku. I also needed the ability to stream movies from my NAS so a possible win-win. Wow, was I wrong. My three-year-old Roku absolutely destroys the Shield in both speed and picture quality. My wife is a PBS fan and she never has time to watch her shows when they air so she relies on being able to use a PBS app. Since it one not available to put directly on the Shield I loaded it in Plex. After two days of trying to get PBS to open, I plugged the Roku back in. My wife was up and watching in less than 30 seconds. The Shield, with Plex, sat for over a minute with the crazy thing in the middle of the screen spinning, but never started the program. The picture quality on all of the apps, including Plex, are absolutely horrible compared to my Roku. The pictures are grainy and appear to lag and then jerk back to the proper spot. I am not sure how anyone can give this product five stars, unless the TV being used is from 1990 and they still have dial up. I am looking forward to returning my Shield this weekend. I will probably just upgrade to the latest and greatest Roku. It probably won't be perfect, but all I want is a good picture and speed that does not make me want to put my iron through the TV.

        Hi,
We’re sorry to hear about your experience. This is not representative of what you can expect with SHIELD so we’d like to help you figure out what is going wrong. The best Android TV STB, but with some limitations

I have avidly been a supporter of Google's attempts to take over the living room. i was one of the first to but into Google TV with my Sony NSZ-GT1, and it was good for what it was in 2011. When Android TV came onto the market I was thrilled and quickly bought a Nexus Player. Then earlier this year I bought a 4k HDR panel and decided to upgrade my STB as well. The Nvidia Shield TV is a fantastic machine for what it is capable of, not only do i have access to all the media apps I could ever wish for, I can also connect a NAS and emulate any game made before 2006. The UI is the usual ATV experience but with a bit more speed thanks to the K1. And the inclusion of HDR10 and Dolby Atmos support made this a machine that I use almost 95% of the time my panel is active. The issue I have with the player is that it is run on ATV a service that is treated as second class when compared to Roku, Amazon Fire, and Apple TV. Becasue of low market saturation it has never gotten consistent updates from third party apps (the Hulu app still uses the old UI, even the Switch runs the new UI). But I can not fault lacking third party support for a great streamer. This is the best STB money can buy and it is capable of almost anything that can be thrown it's way!

I've tried a lot of the other streamers and i feel SHIELD is the most capable. 4K HDR catalog is great because SHIELD has Netflix, Amazon Video and Vudu in HDR. Youtube experience is better than other streamers - you have full search integration, but you can even say show me the latest Tonight Show or ask to play any Music Video and it just direct plays into the Youtube Video. It also seems youtube on SHIELD supports 360 so you can use your remote to see shows in 360 on SHIELD. i know neither of this works on my Roku or Fire TV. I also use Plex and it seems SHIELD is the only streamer that supports Plex as a client and server device. Finally, it is nice that SHIELD has also integrated Samsung Smartthings Hub. I am just started to set up a smart home in my home and it is nice that i can turn on/off my lights via my SHIELD, and set routines through Samsung Integration. I know it is a bit more expensive than other streamers, but i use my streamer more than 10 hours a week so i think it is worth the extra money.

Let me start by saying I really enjoyed the box while it lasted. I bought the 2015 model back in May of 2016. Yes it is out of the 1 year warranty.... however, I expected a box of this name and price to last more than 1.5 years. After many attempts to do every hard reset trick there is, I contacted Nvidia customer support and was told they would look into it and would get back with me in a few days. I sent them pictures of the box, model and receipt. I have called back in the last few weeks to check on an answer and finally got the "Sorry, you're out of your year warrant reason". I wasn't expecting to get a brand new 2017 model or even a free box period. Buy I thought they would at least work with me.... maybe even get me a discounted model..... something. So this will be a lesson for me. Some companies go above and beyond to keep customers happy, and some do the bare minimum. Luckily I still have a 3 year old ROKU that works like the day I bought it. I will be more careful how I spend my money in the future.

I was extremely excited to get this home and installed because of all the reviews I read about it. It did not disappoint me one bit. Welllll ok the remote needs a new design IMO but that’s a very minor detail to get over. It’s easy to plug in & start using or if you are more tech savvy the adding of software etc is also easy as pie. If you are on the edge of buying this or another TV box this one is the best one on the market right now for my needs. I bought a roku stick plus & while it does the job for my bedroom tv it doesn’t do anything close to what the shield can do. The initial price is quite a bit more than other boxes however this is one of those you get what you pay for deals. Granted if you don’t game then this may be a bit overkill. I like the fact that I can expand the memory if needed. Again great product & easy set up but a little on the pricey side.

Tried several other Android boxes before breaking down and purchasing the Shield TV. Absolutely no regrets! Like the byline says at the top: This thing is a BEAST! Both of my previous boxes had issues, despite having better RAM and ROM. One of them (Rocket) was even faster... kind of. Instead of wasting hours trying to get the other boxes to perform, the Shield blasts its way through whatever you want to do. Currently running Kodi and 4 Kodi forks... No problems! The remote leaves a little to be desired (even Roku is better)... but it works and battery life seems to be tremendous! Is it worth the extra money? DEFINITELY!! No hassles, just clear sailing! Just wish I had purchased the Shield first! Been running this box for over a month (daily use), many different builds, a few factory resets, NO PROBLEMS. Enjoy!
