Synopsis

Paranormal Activity
A haunted house makes no secret of the fact it's not pleased with its new tenants in this independent tale of supernatural horror. Katie (Katie Featherson) and Micah (Micah Sloat) are a twentysomething couple who've just moved into a new home in San Diego, CA. Katie has an interest in the paranormal and believes that malevolent spirits have been following her since childhood, though Micah is not so easily convinced. However, after several nights of loud noises and strange happenings, Micah starts to agree with Katie that some sort of ghost may have followed them to the new home. After a paranormal researcher tells the couple he can't help them, Micah decides to take control of the situation and sets up a battery of video cameras so that if a spirit manifests itself, he can capture its behavior on tape. Once the surveillance cameras are in place, Katie and Micah bring in a Ouija board in an effort to talk to the spirits, a move that deeply offends the ghosts. Paranormal Activity was the first feature film from writer and director Oren Peli. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

So, is it worth all the hype? Is it in the same league as The Exorcist, or little more than a pale shadow of Halloween 4? The premise of the story is simple. A young couple, seemingly terrorised by an unknown entity, decide to set up a camera to record the action whilst they sleep and effectively document a haunting from the inside. But is it scary? Paranormal Activity is one of those films, much like Blair Witch, that will divide movie fans across the globe in to two distinct camps. One camp will be convinced it is a truly terrifying and disturbing experience, the other will be completely un-impressed by the scares promised through the intriguing viral campaign and Internet hype. Whichever camp you fell in to for the The Blair Witch Project, will probably designate where you will sit for this movie too. Essentially, this will be based on whether or not you buy in to the world that is being portrayed by the central characters. There are next to no special effects, no haunting soundtracks, and no signs of people wearing their innards on the outside. In order to get something out of the film, you really have to put something in - to empathise with the characters and experience their trials alongside them. A serious investment in how it would really feel to be in the couple's shoes, rather than sit there and wait to be scared, is how this film will impress. I did just that, and to me it was one of the most truly original, chilling and nerve-jangling movies I have ever seen. From the moment the characters are introduced and you are slowly brought in to their world, so the empathy for their increasingly disturbing experiences rises. Even now, when I think of scenes from the film, I can still feel the goose-bumps rise. If I had one criticism, it would be that there was little evidence of the terrorised couple searching for help from outside themselves; but, considering the budget of $11,000, I can understand why the director had to make that choice. If you fall in to the lust-for-gore camp as highlighted above, I can't say it's really going to be your cup of tea. If you are in the 'Blair Witch' camp then see it, 'enjoy' it, and carry it around with you for long after the credits roll.

This film is an absolute work of genius in my opinion. From the way it builds up the 'scares' to the phenomenal climax could not have been bettered. I just love the way the two characters work off each other. They are just everyday decent people that something horrible is happening to and they cannot get away from. They continue to live through this situation and you are on that journey with them. I do not get scared by horrors I think that i have seen too many to allow that now !! But if you really let yourself be taken in by this film and immerse yourself as the director intended you are in for a real treat, you really do feel for these people and it is that pity that makes this film a true horror. Granted there are a few moments that will have you jumping but that is due to the brilliant sound track. Don't believe the review stating that this is all hype. Shut the curtains, turn off the lights and turn up the sound. This is a stunning movie that I feel goes down as an absolute… more »

So, it's late at night, lights are off, and hubby and I bundle in for a horror movie. And then it begins. Half way into this movie, I swear I hear things moving in the hallway, and suddenly, I'm asking hubby to stand guard over me as I go anywhere in the house, despite having every light in the house turned on, mind you. Yup, it freaked me out that much, this movie. Slow paced, but creepy as all h*ll! FYI: I highly DON'T recommend watching this with your foot hanging off the edge of the bed. I say this because my foot lazily dangled over the edge, and only after a breeze hit my foot did I finally pull my foot away from the edge, certain things were waiting to grab me from under the bed. It was really distracting.

This film is made in the same style as the Blair Witch (hand-held camera)..but where in the Blair Witch you didn't really see much of the spooky happenings...with this film you really, honestly do. The entire film takes place in the San Diego home of Katie, who claims to be plagued by demons, and Micah, her obnoxious boyfriend, who totes around a video camera to record evidence that those spirits are real. The two joke and bicker, but at night we see them asleep, the camera at a fixed angle in their dankly lit bedroom. The shot keeps skipping ahead, hour by hour, until spooky stuff starts to happen. With it's this-is-really-happening vibe, Paranormal Activity scrapes away 30 years of encrusted nightmare clichés. The fear is real, all right, because the fear is really in you.

    "Paranormal Activity" delivers...

"Paranormal Activity" is one of the scariest movies of all time. It freaked me out and left an imprint on me that will stay forever. But I gotta tell you... Blu-ray isn't worth buying for this one. Stick with DVD. First off... NO special features on the Blu-ray. Not even a commentary! The only thing that makes the Blu-ray sorta attractive is the digital copy. Other than that... NOTHING. And for me... having better picture and sound isn't necessary for this film. It's actually creepier without full HD picture and sound. So overall... stick with the DVD and you'll love it. Buy the Blu-ray and you'll regret it (just like I am, but I also bought the DVD so... I'm good) Enjoy! Note: I would recommend the DVD not the Blu-ray to a friend.

Does not live up to the hype

After reading all the reviews I had to go get this movie when it came out. I watched it on Blu ray on my 42 inch plasma with surround sound and I still thought it did not live up to all the hype. I love scary movies and have a great imagination but I thought the movie as a whole did not live up to all the reviews. It took way to long to get into the movie and the few parts that were suppose to be scary left me looking for more. I know it was a low budget movie but i feel that this is a movie you should rent because you will never watch it a second time. I feel that not only did I waste $23.00 but I lost 2 hours out of my life that I can never get back. I am not sure how it got such great reviews. My wife, daughter and myself were all very unhappy with this film.

Not What It was in The Cinema

Paranormal Activity' is based around a couple living in their house who are being haunted by a poltergeist so decide to record the events unfolding in front of them. Despite the hype the film received in.the cinemas, it isnt the best film at home due to the atmosphere of the cinema being lost. The story has been done before, the characters are typical of this genre and the sections in between each main event break the tempo of the film. Overall, the film was made for cinema and doesn't suit the small screen although the ending gives your a very nasty surprise. If you have seen it in the cinema, don't bother watching it on DVD/ Blu-ray but if you havnt seen it, its worth a watch on a dark friday night.

    Suspense, not horror

This really is great movie. Filmed on a single camera which is handheld during the day, and mounted on a tripod for the nighttime scenes. It has a very "Blair Witch Project" or "Cloverfield" feel to it, and is VERY suspensful, but I wouldn't classify it as scary. A few parts will make you jump right out of your seat, so it isn't completely lacking when it comes to being classified as a horror film. I really enjoy the small cast; they suck you into the story, but with that said, it's not the greatest acting...no Oscar winners here. The length was a little short at only 86 minutes but the story moves quickly and really doesn't lack plot or substance. A great pick for turning the lights down and curling up on the sofa with your girl or guy.
