You can use the thermostat directly to control the modes and temperature. However, it is suggested to use the app at the very least as the thermostat is very vague on information. All you will see is icons and the current temperature. So until you are used to what the different icons mean, I’d use the app.

However, Ring is fully compatible with the Alexa app and the Alexa app is what is needed to set up the Amazon Smart Thermostat. Hunches support will automatically alter temperature settings based on the mode that it is currently in but it will not switch from A/C to heat automatically.
