We have a new construction home that was wired for a normal doorbell and then we replaced it with arlo and it works with the normal doorbell chiming mechanism!
Arlo wired doorbell comes with an attachment so that it can work with the chiming mechanism for the doorbell.
I would guess that without the doorbell mechanism in your house that the arlo doorbell would still ring to your phone and would still pick up audio and video but maybe look into getting the plug in arlo chime accessory too?
