• A:Answer The closest xfinity approved device to the Arris SBG8300 would be the Netgear C7800-200NAS. Both are DOCIS 3.1 cable modems combined with the hi-speed WiFi Router. The Arris box is new and therefore the comparison tables for performance characteristics are not yet available. There is a Netgear C7800-100NAS which is older than the 200NAS and also more expensive than the 200, so you need to be specific with the Netgear evaluation. The Arris and Netgear devices seem to stack up pretty close. The marketing literature for the netgear device suggests that they have a broad WiFi range (maybe because of the winglet antennas). Until side-by-side measurable comparison occurs, it could be a toss-up except for the price and 2 year warranty that points to Arris.

• A:Answer Not very happy with this modem/router... had an old docsis 2.1 that worked fine. Upgraded my service to gigabyte down... needed a 3.1. If you’re using it wired it works well, the router is lousy. Barely get a signal in the next room and now shopping for WiFi extenders. If it wasn’t for this whole pandemic thing I would have returned it and tried another one or bought separate modem and router. Not worth $300.

• A:Answer This modem has been great. The user interface I find is better than netgears, and the speeds are as well. I’ve benched mark 2.4g around 431mb and my Ethernet at 731mv all while my network video security cameras are running Continuously . This modem also has 4 gigabyte lan ports which others do not. I’ve wired my home for Ethernet for my Xbox down stairs and both desktops and have had no issues. The modem does 5g as well but 5g doesn’t go through walls very well for any router.

Q: QuestionDo we know if this supports VPN access? I have to use a VPN for my work to connect securely, and I was turned off of the Netgear Nighthawk combo because I read they didn't support it. Don't want to rent from Xfinity anymore!

• A:Answer It turns out that while this does have DynDyn, the firmware has a major bug that prevents from allowing hostnames containing a dash/hyphen as mine do. The firmware gives an error of an invalid character when a dash/hyphen is valid. Arris support is less than useless so I would look elsewhere before getting another Arris product.
