A:Answer I just got off the phone with Angel from the geek squad and was assured that Brother's printers must have a black cartridge and the Yellow, Magenta and Blue in order to print, copy or scan. My printer is a multi-function (model MFC-J485DW) printer and when I tried to copy something it didn't respond so I called Brother and was told the same thing as above. Therefore, whoever typed the previous answer is uninformed. It is a nice little printer for the price. Lastly, geek squad said he has another brand, which requires one to have color cartridges as well in order to function.
