A:AnswerThe remote that comes with the unit does not work thru a closed cabinet. However, if you connect other devices with HDMI cables, many devices allow the unit to be turned on and off, volume and other functions thru the HDMI/arc function. For example, I have a Sony Bravia A95L TV connected to the Denon AVR-S970H via the HDMI/arc connection. I also have an Xfinity cable box, ROKU, and a Blu-ray Disc player connected via HDMI to the Denon AVRS970H. So when I turn on/off the cable box or the TV, it will also turn on the Denon receiver. It also allows me to switch the video source for the TV, i.e. DVD or ROKU.
So any function that can be controlled thru the HDMI/arc functions work thru a closed cabinet. Doing setup/configuration/calibration, radio and phono functions, on the Denon that require the Denon remote require line of sight remote access. I don't find this as a terrible inconvenience since its a great unit for the price and I only occasionally need to perform functions that require the Denon remote. In those instances I just open the cabinet door so I cane use the Denon remote. I have solid door and so I have no idea if the Denon remote will ,operate thru a glass door. Hope that helps.
A:AnswerHi AtmosSeeker,
Yes - you can have Dolby Atmos with a five speaker + sub-woofer arrangement connected to an AVR-S970H. It would be configured as a 3.1.2 set-up. You would connect your Atmos speakers to the surround back terminals on the back panel of the AVR-S970H (after assigning that pair to 'height' speakers), and not connect anything to the surround speaker terminals. Rear speakers can be added when you choose to do so.
