Q: QuestionDoes this printer use archival inks or pigment inks? Can it be used for Giclee printing? Do you know any printers that use pigment inks?

• A:Answer This model definitely does not use pigment ink. In fact, most of photo printers in the lower echelon of Epson's catalog do not. Anything you see advertised using a Claria ink-set is going to be dye based. Although I am sure it would void every warranty, and be highly discouraged by every Epson employee alive... aftermarket ink cartridges with pigment based ink will work just fine so long as you don't let it sit too long. The ideal alternative, albeit the less affordable one, is, of course, to take a step up to committing to a prosumer line model photo printer. The SureColor P400, 600, 800, R800, R1800, R1900, R2000, R2200, R2400, R2800, R2880, all are excellent in their own right. Outside from Epson, there's the Canon Pixma Pro 9500, and the Canon Image Prograf Pro 1000. I'd personally advise sticking clear of anything made by HP, but that's my personal bias of course. Make the decision you feel is right for your application use. Good Luck!

• A:Answer I haven't owned the 1430 but I can tell you this, I purchased this printer for my daughter and she's an art major, this is the printer suggested by her professor and it has been a fantastic investment. We save money on print cost and she loves the quality of the pictures. Hope this helps.

The User's Guide does not list vellum specifically, but I just did a test print (color graphics with black text), using the "Plain paper" setting with Print quality "Normal," and it came out beautifully. I used 30 lb. Premium Translucent Vellum, which I had on hand. I love this printer! It got a workout its first few weeks with me: I printed a few hundred sheets, ranging from black-and-white to full color graphics with heavy ink coverage on various weights of paper, with excellent results every time.

• A:Answer I Have 2 wide format printers. I have an Artisan 1430 and an Expression Photo HD XP 15000. Both of these are excellent printers. I like both printers. If I had to select one over the other it would probably be the Artisan 1430 because it is much quieter. Both do a good job.

• A:Answer Not had any experience with the P800, but my wife does watercolor cards on heavy card stock. I scan the card , then print on velvet fine art paper which is about the same weight with no problem using the rear paper slot .

In other words, white is simply the absence of ink. If your paper is yellow, then you'll see yellow where it was white.
