A:Answer Portable room A/C units we've used, all must vent out a window, and mostly recirculate indoor air. Air enters the AC unit through a woven washable filter, most is conditioned and let into the room, while some goes out exhaust via window.
Usually, tiny openings around doorways allow a bit of outdoor air to come into the house; if you are in a wildfire area, there will be some smoke smell get in like that...happened during wildfires up in WA, too. --> But the amount that came into the house was minor, compared with outside.
IF your house has indoor air filtration capable of filtering well [HEPA + charcoal + dust filters], you might not smell smoke at all, unless someone enters a door and lets some come in.
We've a couple window AC units that recirculate indoor air & let off the heat outside, similarly; worked very well during wild fires here--3 asthmatics in house, no complaints.
