- Answer You can upgrade it to 32gb. The board has two sockets, one available and the other occupied by a micron 8gb 3200mhz ddr4 stick. I managed to upgrade it myself with a Samsung 8gb 3200mhz ddr4 stick and it works fine in dual channel. There is a dead bay for a 2.5 data drive that I cannot find out if it would support. Hope this helps.

QuestionI was told by a Blue Shirt that this laptop would not be able to be taken out of S mode, is this true? I feel like he was trying to upsell me onto to different laptop models. I understand the security risks but would I be able to turn it off?

- Answer I have worked on PCs over 40 years and this is a great 17.3 inch machine for the recent sale prices. For generalized tasks there is no need to buy a higher priced model unless you want backlit keyboard or touchscreen models. I've taken my machine out of "S" mode but encountered repeated "Try Again" messages in the process, probably due to temporary Microsoft licensing server issues. I successfully switched to Windows 11 Home version after another 30 minutes later, so no worries if it doesn't work the first times you try. Enjoy!

QuestionI need a basic laptop for home use and for running Steam and RealFlight Evolution for training. I am on a limited, fixed income and don’t need/want a fancy gaming laptop for competing online. Will this laptop be able to serve my basic needs? TIA!

- Answer Thank you for your question on his HP Laptop! This laptop does not meet the processor or graphics requirements for RealFlight Evolution. RealFlight Evolution requires at least an i5 processor and an nVidia or AMD graphics chipset to run. HP offer the Victus gaming laptops, which have these specifications at a reasonable price.

- Answer S Mode is not a substitute for a good antivirus/firewall program. Rather, it is an additional protection, Also, you seem to be confused on a major point: S Mode does not affect which browsers you use to download software, but rather what software you can download.

Windows S mode is a version of Windows that’s streamlined for security and performance. It allows only apps from the Microsoft Store and requires Microsoft Edge for safe browsing. Windows Defender Security comes preinstalled on computers that run Windows S Mode.

- Answer Windows 11 S mode only allows installing software from the Microsoft Store (apps). This restriction may secure the computer better. If you need to install software in other ways, you can follow online guides to permanently switch to regular Windows 11 Home at no extra cost. I quickly found the need to do so and all is well.

- Answer Thank you for your interest in this HP Laptop! The "From the Manufacturer" looks like an issue with the website itself as it is giving information about the wrong model: Someone would need to enter a ticket to change it so the proper information from that tab is displayed. According to the service manual, the memory is not customer-accessible even though it gives instructions on how to replace it. Finally, even though the adapter is Wi-fi 5, it will connect with Wi-fi 7 routers and hotspots.

QuestionEven though the newer SSD storage is more efficient, reliable , quicker and no moving parts, when a computer shows 256 gb storage would the storage be any different on SSD than the older hard drives? The reason I ask is my older computer has 500gb storage

- Answer Thank you for the question. A gigabit is a gigabit, whether it's stored on an SSD or a mechanical hard drive. The difference is what you've already mentioned about SSDs - speed, reliability, efficiency. If you need more storage space, you can switch out the existing SSD for one of more capacity, or use an external drive connected via USB. If your old SSD is form factor M.2, PCIe®, NVMe™ protocol, it's possible that you could use it in the HP 17-cn2083dx. - Answer As noted, no optical drive. Manufacturers are tending to omit them. This lightens the laptop, reduces its overall cost, and results in size and weight savings. Furthermore. optical drives (even Blu Ray) are considered much slower and limited (older technology) than pen drives.

- Answer As noted, there is a trial version. Additionally, there are a number of options for subscribing to or buying the suite, including discounted home and student versions. Furthermore, you can use any individual component (Word, Excel, etc.) through the Edge browser. Finally, if you don't absolutely need the MS version, there are a number of free suites available on the web that may even be better for your purposes than Microsoft's.
