The Orbi system creates a WiFi mesh network for up to 4,000 sq. ft. of seamless WiFi coverage, eliminating the need for extenders and reducing the number of dead zones. It supports both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands and offers Beamforming as well as AC3000 capabilities for improved performance over all connected devices. If you’d like help deciding if the Orbi system is right for your specific needs, please email us at netgearteam@netgear.com and we’d be happy to help.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Your question makes no sense. That's like describing a car for sale as "If you still have to have gasoline, what do I need this thing for, I already have a car". My point is that this is a router. That is all. If your router works fine then you don't need this. If your router sucks, then this one might work better...
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you get this, then you get rid of your router and use this instead which will give you greater speed/range around your house, if you have a Modem/Router convo from you ISP then you go into your Modem/router web interface and disable the Wi-Fi part of it (This is NOT required but recommended) then you will start to connect all your devices to your new Orbi Wi-Fi network in your home that you have created with the Orbi device.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This is not a Modem. It's is simply a router and Wireless system replacement. It's gives you a Mesh network with one single network name and password for your coverage area
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you're satisfied with your current wifi you don't need this. If your wifi is older tech and weak in spots, this system should give you a wifi signal that is stronger and speedier.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Well the two I can think of are: 1. If you need better/stronger wifi coverage throughout your house or 2. if you have newer devices that can use the AC wireless settings. With the Mu-Mimo, even if your devices don't support it, testing has shown that your over all wireless throughput will be better as the router can share the connection better with all devices.

If you like their wifi, then you're right, you don't need this. However, this mesh network is able to provide much better wifi service in your home over a wider area. If you want that functionality, you can stop using the wifi in the cable company gateway, plug the base unit of this mesh (or any wifi router for that matter - this mesh configuration is just a wifi router with multiple satellites in order to provide better area coverage) into it with an ethernet cable, and use the wifi from this mesh instead. Other ISPs just give you/rent you a cable modem with no wifi and you must provide any wireless in your house yourself, so a wifi router something like this is required to provide that function so you're not stuck just plugging one wired device into the cable modem and nothing else.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It's for those that want fast reliable whole home wifi without using multiple extenders, powerline adapters or multiple wifi networks to cover their entire house. In tests at my place the 2 Orbi's (Router + Sat) cover my 2500 Sqft home + I still get access across the street, my neighbors houses, even around the block all at "full" speed. It's just a more simple way to get the coverage and high connection speeds you need around the house. No more dead zones or poor speed areas in your home or yard. If you don't need the routing functions put the Orbi in bridge mode and it will act as an access point with all the same range / speed features but, you can keep you own router for the firewall / DHCP / QoS and parental controls (this is how I run it and it works great).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I bought my own Cable Modem Router that has built in WiFi which tends to overheat while using the WiFi. When it stopped putting out the WiFi signal I ended up buying one of these units that broadcasted the WiFi signal more efficiently. At this point, my family has more wireless tech prior the time the original router WiFi could handle so in a way I've upgraded. The Cable Modem still works but no longer puts out WiFi so I saved by not having to purchase another router. My original router is a Netgear N300 now connected by hardwire to this Orbi unit in turn is connecting my PS3, Samsung Smart TV.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This is a combination router and link extender. They can be used in addition to your router, but I think the recommended way is to replace your existing router with the base unit. The extender "satellite" unit that's included can then be placed somewhere else in your house to extend the range of your WiFi. If your existing router covers your whole house just fine, then you probably don't need this. If you've got some areas where you can't get a signal, then this would definitely help fix that.
