The actual screen itself is refreshing 120 times each second (120hz), but there are other things going on inside of the television that effectively boost the refresh rate artificially (negative frame insertion, backlight strobing, etc.). The technology that Sony utilizes makes it more compatible with the human eye and brain, using your brain's processing power to do some of the motion correction rather than relying on a computer chip to do it (the human brain is MUCH better at this than any computer chip is).
