- Answer Turn off Google Now which is on by default. It continuously uses the GPS to provide you with constant updates. After turning Google Now, my phone lasts the whole day.

- Answer yes. This phone can be used with other phone service providers (MVNOs) who are on the T-Mobile network. I use Ting and they feature a "pay-as-you-go" model with a monthly billing cycle.
