    very inconsistent

Purchased on sale, thought it worth a try. Easy to set up. Weather, etc. worked, but I had to manually put in my address, despite signing on with my amazon account. Seems unnecessary, given that amazon knows my address. However, this is a one-time issue, so not a deal breaker. Works with my Sonos speakers, within limitations, limitations that I was aware of prior to purchase, so not an issue. Main limitation is that it works only with streaming services. That's fine. However, it is completely inconsistent in responding to commands. One time, will start playing. Next, will say it can't play songs from the service it was playing from just 10 seconds ago. Not good. By the way, internet connection is fiber 125/125 and rock solid. Wifi is a Unifi multi-AP system with no downtime in the control panel. No real excuse for this. I can start a radio station with the Echo Dot, but then suddenly can't change it. Then, suddenly, I can change it. Sometimes, I can change the volume, the next time Alexa says the volume can't be changed. It's responding, but not responsive, if you get my meaning. These are basic commands that should be built-in. Will be returning this.

I was excited about getting the Echo Dot. I was going to combine it with my Philips Hue bridge and some other smart home items. When I got it, I tried asking it some questions. Nearly every time, no matter how much I carefully enunciated each word, it would say that it could not answer the question. When I paired it with one of the music services/apps that are compatible, and asked it to play some 70s music, it could not. I asked it in several different ways and then asked it to play several artists. No go. When I returned it to Best Buy, the lady at the service desk said that they had been getting "lots of these back." I asked why and she said because they simply did not work. I will probably invest in a Google Home soon. As somebody who runs a website that sells highly rated tech items, I had to remove this, despite the good ratings it had. Personal experience takes precedence. I would not recommend this product. Maybe the Echo is a better product. I am a writer by profession and would have preferred to write a glowing report about what seems to be a neat device. The one I bought simply didn't work.

I bought this (in 2016) out of the hype of having an AI assistant to control mostly my thermostat. I started adding other smart products later. At first the Alexa was amazing! Being still new at the time, I knew it couldn't do much. It was still fun to play with. But as time went on, nothing was really added and things stopped working. The device would constantly disconnect from wifi and other devices. Luckily I had just purchase a Google Mini, which when Alexa couldn't perform, Google always picked it up and worked. All three dots I had purchased did the same thing. After 1 year of use, the mic could not hear us anymore, it had to be constantly reset. Overall, while it was nice to have in the beginning, I found out it can't do as much as Google's Home Assistant does, and has far too many hardware issues.

I had to return this product as after attempting to get this gadget to work and wasting over 14 hours of my time. Amazon Customer Service told me it was not compatible with my Netgear router even though this incompatibility was not listed anywhere within the system requirement notes on or inside the box. Very unhappy to have had to go through all the trouble to find this out and did not even get an apology from amazon. Very bad experience, this should not happen to loyal customers who put their time and effort into a product that I was informed never would have worked with my router, and I do have a fairly new and Netgear is a very popular router. It was a shame to find out this device was not compatible. Very disappointed with Amazon that I did not even receive an apology for this happening. For these reasons I would have given this product zero stars if allowed.

I was hoping that this would be at least as smart as when you talk to your smartphone on Google- I was wrong. I can ask Google to find me a local store address or phone number, no problem. I ask Alexa (Amazon Echo Dot's wakeup name) and it says "I can't help you". I even went in and did the 25 phrases several times for it to learn- no dice. By the way, this intrusive spying device records everything you ask it, so be careful what you say, as it can be used against you. If I had to do over, I would not buy this again. The ONLY thing it does correctly is play radio stations from my TUNEIN account- end of story. Save your money until they make this stupid thing a little bit smarter. I can't understand it very well either, like when you ask it to tell you a joke. It is a joke.

I decided to purchase Amazon's Dot to see if it was worth it, and I can tell everyone it's not. While it's okay for smart devices when it comes to everything else the Echo Dot simply failed. Once installed I asked basic questions "When was Final Fantasy XV released", "Who was the second president of the United States?", and many other. 60% of the time it would say "Sorry, I'm not sure". That is unacceptable. My brother purchased Google home and not only did it get every question correct but its audio and ease of use surpassed this device in every way. Basically, it did Dot's job better. I can honestly say I wasted my money on this thing. Save your money and get Google Home instead.

Honestly the only thing that this can do kind of well is setting alarms and timers. I got one of those thinking that I would be able to answers some questions but it never seems to know the answers. I recently had the chance to use a Google home mini (which is the same price as an echo) and I was amazed at how many times it was Able to do what I wanted. The only reason I could possibly imagine that you would get this over a Google home mini is because it has a headphone jack and the home mini doesn't. But even then there are ways of connecting speakers to the home mini without a headphone jack not to mention that you can't do a pretty simple DIY headphone jack for the mini.

I would much prefer the google home over the echo. I am highly disappointed by this item. It isn't very helpful when you want to ask it a question, most of the time it will respond by saying "I cannot find the answer to that question". I like the google option from google home where I can ask it a question and based off of the google search it will find the answer. Most of the apps associated with the Echo, do not work correctly. I am glad I bought the cheaper one to find all this out. The only nice thing that I can say about this is that it does accurately play music when asked but google home does the same. I am very bummed by this since I was really wanting the Echo to work as I expected it to.

If you want to know the time of day or the date, this device will do the trick but if you want to get more detailed or complicated information, it would be way less frustrating to get in your car, drive to your local library and find an applicable reference book! This device would be put to better use dropped at center ice between to burly, sweaty hockey players and blasted, with vigor, against the boards with their best slap-shot! Not only is this 'assistant' incapable of answering any question of importance, even very basic questions go unanswered. Don't waste your money! Alexa needs an IEP!

If I had my choice I would give this zero stars. After trying for over 12 hours to get this connected to my wifi, I called amazon customer service and after 2 hours with them on the phone told me that my router is not compatible with this device, and there was nothing they could do for me. This incompatibly should have been listed on the product so the consumer would know ahead of time and not have to have gone thru the time and have to return it due to this incompatibility issue.

I was on the telephone with best buys customer service, then talked to the geek squad, then to an amazon rep. in all I spoke to 6 people trying to help me activate amazon dot.... the last person was very helpful and told me the item was defected and to return it....I was on the phone for almost 4 hours..when we returned the item to best buys the customer service tolds us if we return more items that they will close our account. my husband and I were so offended by this man.. we do not return many things and now will think twice about shopping here or recommending the store to other people.

Honestly, it does the same thing Siri does on my iPhone. I forget I even have it sitting on top of my TV console most of the time. I'm glad I got it on sale, if I paid the retail price of $49 I would have returned it. Granted, I am sure I don't use all its available features. I use it for the weather mostly. It has a hard time gathering any solid information from the web. During the Olympics it kept referring to the Rio Olympics and not the current winter Olympics. Does it work? Sure, but I think it is more of a novelty.

Don't get me wrong. This item itself is very good for the price. What I am not happy about is Amazon's music subscription. I have music subscription for my Echo show which allows me to play almost any music I want, however, it doesn't include my echo dot. I have to purchase separate subscription for this. So I do not really use this Echo dot when except for turning on and off Philips Hue lights. I'd say for this one, go with Google as it should have more functionalities in conversation wise.

My girlfriend told me to purchase this and thank god I did not waste my money on the more costly module. This is a waste of 50 bucks for what you get. This would be great for asking trivial questions but it sucks as an alarm clock, sound is too low. You have no way of setting alarm on a weekly bases and you can only sync to a phone or laptop not a desktop computer. If you could you would be able to play your library from i-tunes collection. Giving this to a co-worker as a gift.

I'm used to AI by now, as Apple Siri concludes many of my past and present request. If you're expected to have product that understands simple questions like what time is a show on or what they score of a game is, don't buy this. However, it will gladly give you options on where to buy a fan t shirt to the team it can't give you score to, See it for what is, a really lazy sales person that lives in your room and wakes up only to sell, not service. Stick with Siri based stuff.

I received a non working echo dot when I ordered one online. I then called and spoke with an online agent a few weeks later after finding out it did not work. I was told that I would have a new one sent to me and that I could just return the defective one. It has been almost two weeks and I am still waiting for this item and an email from your company that I was told would confirm the shipment of the new replacement. I would like to have this problem corrected.

I purchased this since I have the 2nd generation Alexa thinking it would be nice to have to listen to music in another room. I didn't expect the sound quality to top notch or like the Alexa but was quite disappointed with the echo. It reminded me of listening to music on the old battery operated am/fm radios. Terrible. Needless to say, I returned it!

When I made my purchase I read all the reviews citing the ease to use Alexis, and they're right. It's easy to install and use for smart items but overall it's not worth the price. First off Alexis cannot search and answer a lot of questions, speaker volume is very low (my S7 phone speakers has better quality), and simply falls short compared to Google Home. I wouldn't recommend this device to anyone.

This was kind of a hassle to use. It was pretty cool in the commercials but then there was a lot of work behind it to try and get it to do what you see on tv. You have to download all these things in the app on your phone to get it to do much. All we really do is ask Alexa for the weather and she collects dust. I don't have the time to download all this random junk and figure it out. She also randomly goes off sometimes.

Bought this for my husband and he loves it, but it randomly turns on and buts into conversations without saying anything close to Alexa. I believe it's possessed and should be burned until it can speak no more. We compromised and he removed it from living room and put in the office on a trial basis. If that thing talks to me from there, it will burn. Oh yes, it will burn.
