At this point I wish I would have tried Google. For me I added this as part of my smart home controlling the TV, several Sonos speakers, smart outlets and smart bulbs. There are just too many exact phrases you will have to learn to get Alexa to perform the function. If you mistakenly use a plural instead of a singular or vise versa (lamp vs. lamps) she doesn’t know what you are talking about. To play my Sonos I might have to give a phrase like; Alexa play Pandora Relaxation Radio in the den and if you miss anything, too bad. With a smart home I find it quicker to open my app than to learn her language. Also Alexa is horrible with directions. You can ask how far it is to some destination you want to drive to and she gives you the distance as the crow flies and no more. If you ask this of Google you’ll be given how many miles, how long the drive will take, and traffic conditions.

This is a very inefficient way to monitor your home, control lights, music and other features. Voice recognition is POOR to say the least unless you are right next to the device and you speak slowly and loudly. We are constantly repeating the commands because ALEXA doesn't understand them. It is always trying to add things to your AMAZON Shopping Cart, so "Buyer Beware" if you have things being delivered by AMAZON that you didn't order, there's a good chance they are coming from the ECHO. If ALEXA makes an error in understanding your commands and places things in your AMAZON shopping cart, You can't delete the items using Alexa, you have to go online / login and delete them. We have not checked out GOOGLE's system, but at this point I am beginning to believe that any system may be better than the ECHO.

Echo Dot, what’s it good for?

I’m not sure what all the fuss is over Echo Dot. Aside from answering questions (ex. Current temp, time), Alexa seems unable to access or control my Next Thermostat, Ring Video Doorbell or iSmartAlarm. I added each skill in the Alexa app, but nothing works. Shocker. I’ll keep it, but Echo Dot is about as exciting as a paperweight. This morning I asked Alexa the hours for a local aquarium. Alexa claimed not to have access to business hours. I asked phrased the question differently and was given the hours for today. I asked about Saturday hours, and Alexa once again claimed no access to business hours. Yeah... save your money.

At first I was thrilled with my purchase. I ordered online, used a coupon, and the Dot arrived safely packaged and much faster than I expected. I followed all directions when setting up. Again, at first it worked pretty well. I said good morning and got a cute joke in return. I added items to my grocery list, being careful not to say "order" an item, as I had learned this would really order things from Amazon. I tried to play music but since I don't subscribe to any carrier, I was very limited. Then the real trouble started. Alexa kept coming on saying she had lost connection... this occurred several times a day. I can't tell you how many times I went back and set everything up, called my cable company (it wasn't them) and rebooted my router (purchased from Best Buys with no previous problems). I have finally given up and unplugged it.

Didn't get to try the first version of these, but am pretty disappointed in gen2. I've gone through 4 of these so far, all have had issues. Most if not all, seem to have bluetooth problems. I use this mostly for streaming music to my AVR, which is only 5 feet away. I get random disconnects, sometimes it connects sometimes it doesn't. The most frustrating issue I've had, and they have all done it, the first one was the worst, it seems like if you are streaming music and the Dot has to "think" at anytime, the music breaks up for about 10-30 seconds...It's like they went too cheap on the electronics, and it struggles anytime it tries to multitask. I can understand Amazon trying to cut costs to lower the purchase price for consumers, but I think they cut too much, and the Dot is barely usable for my needs.

I really was excited when we first got this. I've been wanting to get into home automation for a while and it was finally happening! I got it set up with our WeMo switch and Nest thermostat and we were off. It worked with the WeMo once before it couldn't find it again and I was never able to get it to work again. I also synced it with the Nest and then, the next day, tried to get it to turn up the heat. It just said it couldn't find any registered devices. When I got home from work that day, I asked it to play some music and it simply said it couldn't do that. I put it back in the box and exchanged it for a Google Home, which has been MUCH better. Paired with a Samsung Smartthings hub, it does everything I could want it to. If you're on the fence, I highly recommend the Google Home over the Echo.

Both the app and Alexa Echo Dot device are useless... - She doesn’t recognize voices/accounts (plays the wrong song, performs wrong task, or just shuts off completely instead...) - It’s a CONSTANT struggle to open my Spotify account and play music via my Alexa Echo Dot - When using voice commands for smart home features, or any feature really... I’m having to repeat myself several times before I end up getting up to do it myself This device got so much hype... for what? It has frustrated me more than it has EVER added any kind of convenience. Absolute waste of money. Alexa is now primarily used for collecting dust.

First off, I bought two of them because I saw that you can buy contractors packs and they weren't on Amazon. I was told that you can sync them together, but this is not the case and they work independently and separately. Alexa is actually ignorant in which you need to program her and after doing so, she still says that she doesn't know anything. I'm extremely frustrated and I want to throw it in the trash. I also made sure I adapted it to my voice and that didn't seem to help either and Alexa thought I said that I need to go into a black man, when I clearly stated that I need to get to the nearest bank. This is just absurd and trash to be honest. Waste of money but oh well, that's life. Lol

I use this thing to control my Hue lights, it usually works, sometimes only turning on or off some of the lights in a room. Most of the time it responds with "i don't know that one." Google searches are more effective at just about anything this can do, except this can remind you of appointments and makes buying more Chinese plastic crap you dont need even easier through amazon. Its a stupid product designed to "help" you buy more through them. I got 2 for free with Hue purchase, they are giving them away again, guess they dont sell well enough on their own.

paying only $40 for this Dot, i'll keep it. I hate that it doesn't play Google Music without needing bluetooth connected. I would like to be able to speak to my echo and request Google Music Songs to be played. not having to use my physical phone. Amazon music songs dont amount to how many google has and this is what sets it apart and makes it a less desired service for me. This also does not work with my smart home product as it was advertised to do so. I am very tech savvy and this is not a faulty result of my own but a lack on Amazon's part. I will be getting the Google hub and dedicating this as entertainment music for my pets.

I’ve given this 2 stars ( trust me it may show more above bc every time I enter 2 or even 3, it won’t submit my review!) because it doesn’t always respond to what you ask it. But we don’t allow electronics inside bedrooms except this so it’s perfect for night time listening to a book or asking simple questions about weather. It’s kinda over rated to be honest. It has done some glitchy things so not sure if I trust it anymore. I actually am starting to believe they are manipulating my review!

    Fun until it died

I bought this for my significant other for Christmas and we had a lot of fun with it until about a month past the warranty period when it just died. We tried resetting it, we tried using a different power supply, we tried contacting Amazon. We were told that nothing could be done for us but to buy a new one. It's bad enough when something you bought for yourself backfires that quickly, but a completely different level of frustration when a gift you gave turns out to be poop. I'm rethinking Amazon and will probably look at the Google system when I decide to put an AI system into our house again.

There are aspects of these units that are great, but when you find yourself yelling at the unit because you're having a bad day and it just isn't listening, you want to use it as a puck. Regardless of how many microphones are in this thing, it just doesn't seem to hear you at times! There seem to be updates going on in the background or something that "divides its' attention" and it is far, far, far too often!!! On a treadmill:" Echo, play Janet Jackson". Good song finishes, slow song begins: "Echo, next, Echo, next, Echo...Echo...ECHO...ECHO!!!!! ...annnndddd HOCKEY PUCK!

I bought 3, knowing it has some limitations. But I was looking at the future with its compatibility with Sonos. Thus far, i'd say after the gimmick fun of them wears off, they are overrated. I have multiple in home smart devices a WINK hub, LIFX bulbs, a whole home Sonos system & a Nest thermostat. The dot loses connection, can't find the device or works intermittently. For a smart device it's not so smart. It barely can answer basic search questions. I use it more for a glorified alarm clock with the occasional weather and sports updates. Hoping the Sonos compatibility works so i didn't totally waste $150.

Not a fan. It randomly starts talking and responds to certain things we say, always at the most opportune times. I also don't like the fact that it's always listening. No thanks. The only cool feature was I could tell it to ask Roomba to clean but even that I didn't use much. Roomba was on a schedule and I had the app. We also have Alexa built into our Play:One, we disabled that. If I want to find out something, I'll google it. If I want music to play or Roomba to clean, I'll open that app and do it myself.

After using my Echo Dot for about a month regularly, I retired it to semi-regular use. It wasn't too difficult to set up, but it was the fine tuning and constant use if third party integrations like IFTTT, Pushbullet, etc., and it's limitations that made me reduce it to just being a smart speaker for my bedroom (and light controller for my bedroom shower). The more I used it, the more I didn't like it. So I use it sparingly and for a specific purpose now and I can tolerate it. Get the Google Home instead.

I wouldn't recommend this product. I knew it constantly listens fo commands. The problem is once you download the app that goes with it you conversations are recorded on that app. My gf and I had a very private conversation and it was recorded on these cards on the app. We download it on our family tablet. Thank God we seen it before her son did. And if that wasnt bad enough it picked up someone elses phone that had the app on it and started playing their play list. I have know idea whose phoe it was

Purchased a Dot to supplement the Alexa experience in bedrooms throughout my home. It seems to have a lot more difficulty maintinaing connections to all the smart “things” the Echo Plus manages. It is also very difficult to get the Dot to update itself to iron out any persistent issues when they do arise. Honestly, I would suggest passing on the Dot and just spend the extra $20-$30 to get the Echo, and if you can afford it...the Echo Plus.

Here's the deal: If you're ok with a hockey puck constantly listening to the conversations and dealings within your home and when asked to play music, the sound quality being lackluster, the Echo Dot 2 is for you!!! This came bundled with the Ring doorbell and I understand why, but not sure it's really that profitable compared to the phone app.
