It has to be flat side down against the side of the ipad and has to be in a specific place. It does not stay charged as long as I thought it should. Sometimes you have to screw and unscrew the tip to get it to work.

One warning: the pencil is very sensitive to being squeezed. Doing so will call up a menu where you can choose whatever function you want the pencil to assume (such as to draw or to erase), so you must hold the pencil gently while being used.
