The item can only scan one page at a time and was getting jammed every second or third scan

The scanner was broken (not physically, but its functionality impaired). I wish Brother had a quality control system in their production line.

This scanner is very compact. Is also powered via USB 3.0 connection, no need to have a separate power supply for this scanner. The scanner can scan at any size that is 8.5” wide. This can be letter or legal-size paper. It can also scan smaller size items like receipts, business cards etc. The scanner does not come with any software, you need to have internet access to download the required software and drivers(note: since I am doing a fair and honest review for Best Buy Tech insiders I believe the scanner that I received didn’t came with software because I received this product before it was officially release to the public, you may receive the proper software via cd in the box once is officially released). Once everything is installed you can program the scanner to scan in multiple formats ex. JPG, pdf and others. This type of scanner only scans one side at a time if you need to scan multiple sides at a time you need a different model ex. DS-940DW can do this for you but not this model the DS-640. The scanner takes about 3 seconds to start scanning once you press the start/stop button, this can be a little annoying. I wish this scanner scans the paper similar as when you put a dollar on a vending machine. Ex. once it detects a piece of paper it would drag it and scan it, but it does not work that way. Is a little tricky at first to align the paper on the scanner keep it in place and then wait 3 seconds or so to scan once you press the start/stop button. Make sure you have enough desk space in front and behind the scanner for the paper to move freely. Quality seems to be in pair with any scanner that you find in all-in-one printers. You can increase the dpi to increase the resolution/quality of the scans but if you increase the resolution each scan will take more space in your hard drive. You may ask if I recommend this scanner, I will say Yes of you don’t mind waiting a little extra once you press the start/stop button. Other than that, I don’t find any other negatives for this scanner, it does what it does, and it does it well. I subtract one star just for the small delay when you press the start/stop button.

Not great. The scanner was unrecognizable after falling asleep.

This might be one of the best tech products that I will get this year. Not only is it a quality scanner that scans in both color and black/white, its light, portable and comes with very functional software to make it even more of a necessity for the laptop bag. Weighing in at 1.029 lbs., it is only 1.99" x 11.85" x 1.45" in size which makes it a perfect mobile scanner. It is powered by a laptop (or desktop) computer using the micro USB 3.0 cable that comes in the box. The DS-640 can scan many types of documents from plain paper, photos, receipts, business cards and even plastic/laminated cards, and that also includes embossed laminated cards. It can scan at a speed up to 16 ppm and is capable of scanning documents as single pages or multi-pages and provides the option of either saving the scanned document in a Secure PDF, Searchable PDF, or PDF/A format. The scanner is designed to work with the operating systems of Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Being compact and light certainly makes the DS-640 mobile. But Brother must realize that mobile isn’t all there is to making a product be useful, necessary and integral to a person’s lifestyle. The software that is included with the DS-640 is the other part of this procurement that makes it all so important for me. The software allows for scanning to various destinations including File, Image, OCR, Email and various cloud services. I can also just scan it to my laptop’s hard drive or external drive. No longer do I have to schedule a part of my week just to input scanned receipts, I can now scan them easily on the go. Other great features of the included document management and OCR software is that this software allows me to turn any of my hard copy documents into editable Microsoft Word files. The scanner will accommodate 72” long documents that are up to 72 lbs. in bond weight. The document and OCR software and the ability to scan so many types of media make this very useful for me in my daily work of making flyer’s and posting sales ads. It is a real time saver. The Brother Receipt Software that works great with this product is also a great time saver as I am sure I will appreciate it even more come tax time when it is all compiled for me and in Quicken which I purchased separately. If you are looking for a very nice mobile scanner, or even if you are just tired of keeping up with receipts for your business or work, you owe it to yourself to check out the DS mobile scanners by Brother. This is their compact mobile scanner, but there are a couple of other models that you might want to compare with this one before purchasing. I love my little scanner. The compact size and light weight are awesome! It is just a great and welcomed tech accessory to have.

I have the DS-640 Compact Mobile Scanner, and It does provide a quality scan in both .jpg and .pdf; these are the file formats I have used it with. I have to use it with a USB connection so, I have found it works well when using my Laptop. It would have been better to truly make it "mobile" if it could be used with my mobile phone, this model cannot, It can be convenient for travel, or away from home or office scanners. Overall it works fine, the software is easy to set up, and it can scan a document very fast. If you desire a real "mobile" experience, you need to get the DS-940DW model. Also, I found the build to be excellent; it's solid but not bulky so that you can carry it with you and your Laptop.

This scanner works really well, I have a Mac and can say once you download the App from the Mac App Store its very easy to use. Once downloaded you just select scan, then select your device and your ready to go! its very easy and the scans are very good quality. You can customize the resolution, color or black and white for a range of different documents/photos to get the desired outcome. You can also save the scans in a variety of formats ie. JPG, PDF and more! So far my number one favorite thing to use this scanner for is to scan receipts so I don't have to save them anymore especially for extended warranties and also any other important documents like tax return docs and more! I think this is great for all mentioned uses and I love it.

Great for at-home quick scanning of documents, receipts, pictures. Allows setup of multiple workflows for one-click scanning in a variety of formats - text, pdf, jpeg, etc. Also has a customizable machine default workflow so you can do quick scans with a press of the start button on the scanner. I use this scanner for receipts - they feed through easily and quickly, and set at the default 300 dpi the scans are quick and the images are sharp. This scanner is not wireless so it has to be connected to a laptop or desktop PC to work. The scanner is compact and lightweight so you could pack it in a bag with a laptop for on-the-go scanning, but the Brother wireless scanner for about $60 more might be a better choice if you need one for use on-the-road.

The DS-640 mobile scanner is a mobile scanner that can be carried anywhere. This unit is powered through your computers USB port. The software is just a download away. The DS-640 scans directly to your computer to a default folder. You can also download the BR-Receipts program, this makes the scanner even more useful. As you can scan to a data base and sort your receipts by date and vendor name. I have tried both ways of scanning my receipts and I prefer the BR-Receipts app.

This is a great scanner. The sheets feed easily and straight, colors and contract are accurate, text is sharp. The included software allows you to scan multiple pages into a single document, and you can download Brother's receipt scan software for free if you register your product. It's very lightweight and travels well. The only two things that would have helped this are a micro-USB port instead of the larger one (one less cable to carry) and a small pouch to keep it from getting damaged when traveling. Overall, an excellent scanner at a very reasonable price.

This is a high quality mobile scanner. Very easy to initially set up and start scanning. It is simple to either scan single pages or multiple page documents. I especially like the ability to not just scan to my computer, but also to be able to push the scan to the cloud of my choice. Very cool. The quality of the scans I have done is great - no complaints whatsoever. All in all, a great little scanner. Highly recommended!

It's a nice little unit. The SW set up was a little buggy but hey, it's SW. Not a deal breaker. Simple to use and I love the small footprint. It disappears behind my monitor and I grab it for use and tuck it back in when done. In all, I would recommend to a friend.

Wow. This little scanner is marvelous. I am already thinking of when and why I will use it. Measuring 12 x 2 x 1.5", it would easily fit into any laptop case or backpack. Scans one item at a time. You can scan anything from a business card/credit card, to something 8.5 inches wide. And fast!! There is a small lever which you adjust to the size of the item being scanned; this keeps the item going straight through The software makes scanning a breeze. Simple place your item, face up, in the scanner and press scan. After you scan a page, it allows you to 'add' other scanned pages to the same document. You have a choice of save formats, including jpeg, pdf, txt and rtf. You can save to PC or to the cloud. I am going to enjoy using this at conferences!!

Scanner is great once you get the software installed. Produces a great graphic image of whatever is scanned, e.g. picture, text etc. Installation of the software took some effort. Finally went to the Brother site, choose my scanner model, opened the quick start guide .pdf, clicked on the link for the software (same as url on page 2) and was able to get it installed. Did receive a few errors along the way, choose continue and the download/install continued.

Works as advertised. The only hangup was a lack of manual information on how to set the paper guide to the paper size, and whether to feed paper sheets in at the front, or at the back. Turns out you set the paper guide to the right, and that allows feeding paper in the front. Aside from that, it works.

The portable Brother scanner works perfectly and easy to use

This is my first purchase of portable scanner. It's a one side scanner and you get what you paid for. I am happy with this scanner. I went to brother website and after registering the scanner, I downloaded the pdf document software and Paperport pdf management program and the receipt scanning software. The USB 3 cable for the scanner is 35 inches long, almost 3 feet.

I scanned about 50 to a 100 documents and receipts one afternoon and everything worked fine... until it didn't. I tried everything to get it working (I used to be CompTIA A+ certified, so I am pretty privvy to troubleshooting hardware and software issues). I tried unplugging it for a while, opening the scanner to remove anything that was stuck and to clean it, re-installing the drivers, re-loading the scanner settings in the software, etc... the image would be 100% black on every scan thereafter. Then I put it in a pocket in my backpack which houses many other electronics and cords for those electronics. The cord to this scanner is very cheaply made and melted all over the place. I had to wipe the gunk off of all the other things in that pocket. Luckily it was only stuff I could clean in there, but it did ruin a large pocket in my backpack, and now I need to buy a new scanner and a new backpack...
