If you have high GPU power demands, dont!

So i dont like giving bad reviews for good products, this however is the exception. Call it user error, or maybe the manufacturer believes in one cabke fits all- they dont. VGA power cables should not be daisy chained especially on anything high end in the last few years. Its a great product, with terrible cables packaged with it. Picked this up on sale and then returned it for another brand 850w PSU. I cannot stand the horrible VGA cables corsair included in this package, an 850w with daisy chained vga cables is not worth it, just buy a 1000w psu that has single 6+2 vga cables over this one. Save yourself the headache of system bluescreens and awful noodle looking extra cables hanging off the GPU if you use both the daisy chained vga cables. Or be prepared/warned and buy some custom cables ahead of time.

Pay Attention to the Actual Part Number

Pay Attention to the Part Number. There are two versions of this power supply at the time of this review. The RM850X marked with model: CP-9020200-NA (SKU: 6459244) has a total of four 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors. The RM850X marked with CP-9020180-NA (SKU: 6229601) has a total of six 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors. I got the wrong one but made it work by ordering an extra cable off of eBay. Some current video cards (like the EVGA 3080 FTW3) will require all six for your video card. This is very confusing, as both models are marked: "RM850X". Aside from Corsair having serious brain flatulence when labeling their power supplies, I have not had any issues with their units functioning appropriately. It is unfortunate that I had to spend more money, and had to wait on more parts before properly using my new items due to Corsair's poor decision.

CABLES ARE A PAIN, but the PSU is great.

Look, so far this thing is awesome. But... those reviews complaining about cables? Yeah the cables are not great and it's obvious why. I had no issues with length, but the capacitors built into the wires (I assume that's what they are, as prominent review sites complain about this) makes the wire ROCK SOLID IMPOSSIBLE TO FLEX/BEND a couple cm from the end. So it's REALLY an unneccessary struggle to wire your MB (CPU was THE WORST offender, though the 24pin to the MB was so fat it really fought me trying to fit it through a Corsair 5000D cable management port. Seriously, their own case could barely handle this.) Why is it obvious? Because for ONLY $110 you can buy their premium cables. Ugh. I'd highly recommend it though I have not. I replaced a DOA EVGA PSU which had 2 dedicated power cables for the GPU (this Corsair only has daisy-chained ones which makes wiring ugly) and all cables were far more manageable. The PSU would be a solid 5/5 if they didn't make intentionally brutal cables in order to sell premium cables for NEARLY THE COST OF THE PSU... ($130 for a PSU, then $110 to replace the cables? Ugh)

My product was just one of the random ones that are defective. It had a burning oil type smell, much different than a normal new PSU smell. It even made me nauseous. Other than this one in however many chances of getting a defective unit, this PSU would be solid for those who dont need a 1000+.

I bought this PSU because I had a unique setup where I turned a Dell Precision T5810 into a gaming rig by installing an RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra GPU. Since Dell uses proprietary power connections, I couldn't just upgrade, I had to add on. So I plugged in the PSU and added a jumper to the PSU. I haven't been able to fully utilize the PSU so I can't give a higher score. Not to mention that the modular part is a little confusing. The GPU/CPU connections and their titles are in odd places and the directions didn't help much. But it does say more than I need right now, so it's still working beautifully.

Um love everything about this power supply. However it should come with 3 pcie cables. That to me is kind of a big deal. Considering i have one thats an older model that came with 3. That allowed me to uprgade to a 3080ti. If you know anything about buying power supply cables for specific models of PSU. Then you know how important it is to get that very specific cable. Because you cant just mix match cables from other power supplies in rigs without taking major risks. I think they seriously need to fix this...

Installed this because my 6 month old prebuilt's PSU, I bought from best buy, burnt out. Only reason I didn't take it in for geek squad to fix it under warranty is because they are the rudest most ignorant people I ever met. I walked out twice on them because I didn't want to snap out on them. Rude people man! I'm glad I know how to build a PC.

I bought this PSU to power my new RTX 3080 Ti that has three power ports, but was very disappointed to only find 2x PCIe cables packed in with the PSU. To buy more cables from Corsair would cost $30 each, and the PSU has the ports to support more connections. Strangely it comes with 3x 8 pin CPU cables, one more than I needed. I returned it and bought the EVGA 850w G6 instead which came with 4x PCIe cables and 2x CPU cables.

      Hi Pete,

The PSU should include 2 cables that each provide 2x 6+2 connections and should be enough to power the GPU. You can refer to our Tech Specs here to see the included PCIe connectors as 4:

quality power supply, but corsair is cheaping out on cables. why would a power supply need to include 3 separate 8 pin cpu power cables while only giving 2 8+8 pin pcie power? doesnt make sense, especially since even the highest end boards use up to 2 8-pin cpu.
