    It Always Dies

It’s battery always runs out so it’s “offline”. Its schedule is difficult to set and it’s always adding heat times that I don’t want -and increase my bill. “Clunky” is an understatement when describing the on-unit interface. If you must do anything besides change the current temperature, using the app is a necessity which shouldn’t be an issue for a device that costs $300. Pretty round glass tho. (ecobee has a great touchscreen) It’s a stupid design to allow this thing to run without a C-Wire, it has a battery, but it frequently runs out, and it forces the furnace to run off-schedule to charge itself. The upstairs bedroom is usually at least 10° warmer than the ground level, where the nest is mounted. Additional room temperature sensors (like the ecobee), and running the fan more would be a benefit. Oh, and the ecobee works with Siri. Buy an ecobee.

We're sorry to hear about these issues you've experienced. There could be a few reasons why the Nest battery would drain without a common wire. If it drains to the point of the network disconnecting but the display doesn't fully die, this is an indication that the network connection may be causing the issue. You mention the furnace coming on on its own, this is a symptom of the system being sensitive to the way the Nest charges its internal battery off of the HVAC wires, and this is something our support staff can assist with. Feel free to reach out to our support staff and they'll be happy to get you taken care of so this issue is resolved. Additionally, we've recently released our Nest Temperature sensor which is currently on pre order. Nest.com/help Nest

    Wifi no longer connects.

Worked great for 3 years and then the wifi module went out and it will no longer connect to the network. Contacted support after resetting and troubleshooting. Google will not stand by the product and only has a 2 year warranty. This is a known problem when searching the internet for solutions. Disappointing that after spending over $200 it breaks just out of the warranty period. Will not purchase a nest device again.

    Nice hardware, horrid software

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Nest is a Google subsidiary, and Google is a software company. Yet this is a completely brain-dead product! (1) You can program the unit to use the thermostat sensor or a remote sensor BUT it will only switch on their arcane schedule. E.g., it can switch for "night", but "night is predefined as 9PM to 7AM. No Options! If you're not in the Nest employee's climate zone, you're just SOL! (2) You can turn on the fan, but ONLY if you set the unit in either heat or cool l mode. Just turning on the fan, then, requires you to set a mode, set a temp that won't cause the system to engage (thereby messing up the "learning" feature) and then turn on the fan. (3) You can schedule the fan to be on or off, but not at times convenient to you. You can choose a range of hours and a "% of each hour". You can't just say "every 2 hours for 20 minutes". In fact, you can't choose 20 minutes...it's 15, 30 or 45! (4) The "learning" function means little or nothing. There is no way of telling it to use your programmed information or the things it has learned. There is no way to see if it is following a program or some "learned" behavior. There is no way to tell it that the behavior you just manually entered is something it should learn or a one-off because you wanted to open your windows. (5) When cooling, it can be set to continue for a bit to collect the benefit from cold coils. When heating there is no such feature--heat in the system is simply lost. I could continue, but this is the bottom line: Nest's competition is WAY ahead. If you really want to by the Nest, I'll happily sell you mine for 33% off!!

I Regret Buying This Nest Thermostat

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I had two working thermostats in my home. I replaced them both because I wanted smart thermostats. One Nest works fine and the other has been a disaster. Sporadically it shows that my home is heating but no hot air is coming out. Google Nest support has been a disaster. After multiple phone calls and tests they have me perform to isolate the problem it is still not fixed. I've paid to have HVAC people come out and they say the problem is the thermostat. Google wants me to keep exerimenting to solve the problem - they won't send a new unit. I've wasted 10 hours of my dealing with their support and mulitple mornings without heat. I'd never recommend a Google Nest to anyone.

After going through 2 nests in 5 years I give up with this product. They do not make the batteries serviceable and they often fail. Be weary. I did not purchase mine at Best Buy.

    NEST Wi-Fi connection woes

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

DO NOT BUY THESE. There's a defect and right after your 2 year warranty has expired, the unit will be unable to connect to your Wi-Fi. If you don't believe me, Google it. If this happens before your 2 year warranty has expired, it seems Google will work with you, but good luck in trying to find someone at Google.

    Constant issues, no company support

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this thermostat precisely two years ago; I was never able to connect it to WiFi. About a week ago, the thermostat died completely - it will not charge while it is on the wall. I've been having to take it off the wall, charge it with a USB for 8 hours, then can return it to the wall. It is precisely 3 months out of warranty, and yet Google will do nothing. Not only did they make me go through a painful 2 hour troubleshooting session (despite doing most of the steps myself previously), they did not even offer a discount for a replacement. Unless you think this thermostat is worth $125/year, stay far away.

Hi caremedy, we hear you and thanks for letting us know that your Nest Learning Thermostat isn’t maintaining a charge while it’s on the wall. We’d like to help.

Nest thermostats power issues may occur when your system wires can't deliver enough power to keep the thermostats charged up. As a result, they start draining the batteries and disconnect from your Wi-Fi and sometimes. Poor Wi-Fi connectivity can also cause the battery to drain faster. Your Nest thermostat uses the voltage from your system’s wires to keep its internal battery charged. If the power to your system is switched off or there’s a blackout, the battery has enough capacity to keep working for a while but will eventually run out. Your thermostat will also turn off features like Wi-Fi to preserve battery life before it must turn off completely.

We understand it can sometimes be difficult to deal with this kind of issue. We’d like to have another opportunity and figure out a way that may help improve your experience if you can contact us here: https://support.google.com/googlenest/gethelp Nest

HVAC system will not turn on now

I followed all set up instructions including the compatibility instructions for it to cause my a/c not to work. I can not access the nest.com site for support due to it being down and that includes the app. I called and was on hold for 25 minutes for the guy to tell me their network issues would not be resolved for a couple of hours and to hang up mid way through the call. His first question was, “Did the a/c unit work prior to installing the thermostat?” Seriously? If my A/C didn’t work prior I would be spending money to fix that, not on this useless product. Now I’m back on hold hoping I don’t get hung up on again while my 3 kids, dog and cat live in a house that is 83 degrees and rising. Thank you Nest.

    Broke in 5 months.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Installed and worked fine for five months. Then it would not connect to WiFi and would not turn on unless disconnected and reconnected to the base. Tried all troubleshooting on the nest site. Using Nest support was a bad experience. Humans are hard to get on the phone, texting is their preferred communication. They agreed it is broken. To get the replacement mount, yes apparently that is the issue, I need to first send my base to google and then they will send the replacement. I am going back to my Honeywell. Never had a problem with it. Good bye google your product and support are a waste of time and money.

    Nest Learning Thermostat

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased the Nest Learning Thermostat from Best Buy and I paid upfront for the installation. 2 days later 2 installers come to my house to installed since I paid $99.00 for installation in addition of the $249.00 for the Nest. The technician ended up scratching wall plate with his screw driver and I did not get any heat for a few days. I did some researched and it seems that they wired incorrectly. I really regret it getting their installation. I called to complaint and they keep you on the phone for 1 hour transfering you from agent to agent. I am starting to hate this company....we had to sleep for a few days without heat.

Have been through 3 of these in the last 2 years. Each time we get the same malfunction error and have to replace. If I could give no stars I would. It always malfunctioned when the weather hit negative temperatures. I wouldn’t recommend Nest if you want it to last more than a year.

Thermostat doesn't charge so furnace can't run

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

There's no batteries in the thermostat. It constantly cycles the thermostat because it doesn't get enough power. If you have to take it off the wall the charge the thermostat. I'd rather just have a basic thermostat at that point. The features are ok other than that. HUGE COMPLIANT! It's a pain when the weather is cold and you have to charge it otherwise your house could freeze!

We're currently on our 3rd nest. First one stopped connecting to the internet. Second one also stopped connecting to the internet but also wouldn't charge. We were left without a thermostat in our house for days so no heat. We just got our 3rd one yesterday and I just want to make sure no one has to deal with this. Everyone around me with them have had the same issues.

As an installer for these i would not recommend these some models require the google nest home app to run the issue is that this application isnt good it does not work half of the time nor is there an update that fixes the constant crashes. Spare yourself the headache and just buy something that isnt google or nest.

Thermostat constantly loses connection. Nothing we have done fixes the issue even daily restarts. Router is next to the thermostat and it’s wired into a power supply. Not much of a smart thermostat if you can’t even use its remote features.

WiFi connection issues, on your own after warranty

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I would not purchase this product again. After 8 months the product would no longer connect to WiFi. After 3 hours on the phone with google/nest support, they sent a replacement which I received in about 2 weeks. 6 months later (now out of warranty) the same problem occurred. After speaking with nest, they told me I should just buy a new one. Because the third time is the charm I guess? Don’t waste your time. Buy a simple thermostat.
