I was going back and forth between the nest e and the third gen. I absolutely love this thermostat. The ease of setup could be better, but it has been adjusting flawlessly.

Was in thermostat bliss until I tried to pair this Nest E thermostat to my new phone. It wouldn't get me to the app connection because battery was low. Oh, it has a replaceable battery, I wondered. How hard can it be to change a battery? After about three hours of hunting, I can get no help from Google or their websites, I can not find a replacement battery that matches the part number on the original. There is one crappy video on youtube with a little help but not enough. I can find no one who can replace a battery (it is harder than it sounds with 8 screws and a couple of miscellaneous parts that fall out when you take out the screws) so I ended up buying a new one as I needed it for my office without delay. Great thermostat until it is battery replacement time in a year or two after the purchase. If I could solve this battery problem, I would be happy to change this to a 5 star.

Hello flynv,
Thanks for leaving your feedback with us. We're really sorry to hear you are experiencing a battery issue with Nest Thermostat E, but we're here to do our best to help resolve it.
We don't recommend replacing Nest Thermostat E's battery as it may cause further damages to the thermostat. Nest thermostats are designed to charge up their batteries from your system's cooling and heating wires, so that they would always be fully charged up as long as they get consistent power from the wires. However, there may be some cases in which the wires can't deliver enough power to charge a Nest thermostat and the thermostat starts using its battery for power.
In such a case, you can pull off the the thermostat from its base and charge up the battery using the USB port on the back. You will need a Micro-USB to USB-A cable and you can connect the cable to a computer, or to a wall outlet with an adapter.
But for a permanent solution, you may need a common wire (C wire) in your HVAC system to deliver consistent power to the thermostat.
If the issue is not related to your system, please feel free to reach out to our support team in the following link to isolate the issue further and find a resolution for you: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/7072407

3 months and it's horrible, this coming from a long time Nest user. I don't know, maybe Google messed it up. First off, it's difficult to see the actual room temp. But when you can, it doesn't turn on. Room temp is 75, target temp is 74, and nothing goes on. Talked with support, had me restart it, pull it off the wall and reboot it. It wouldn't turn on at the target temp of 74. Dialed it down to 72, it turned on, put it back to 74 and would say it's going to take an hour to get to 74 - after it wasn't on a few second ago! Then 3 minutes later it would say room temp is 71. Clearly a not so smart - smart thermostat.

I think the iterations of the original Nest thermostat say "LOOK AT ME!, I'm cool" (and it is) It has a very distinctive look. I'm more of a minimalist person and like things that don't draw a lot of attention to themselves.
The frosted bezel lens, ring and face plate work perfectly for me.
I don't feel the plastic ring does look cheap. It looks subtle. I would have liked to have done away with the mounting plate, however to due to the way the previous thermostat was mounted and the control wires were run through the wall, it was a necessity. It also reduces smudges on the wall from adjusting things at the thermostat, if not using the app.
Check to make sure the E provides the connectivity and functions you need. Connectivity was not an issue for our system and the fact it didn't show the outside weather was not a deterrent in our case. (Outside temp IS shown on the app.) I like the frosted face that becomes active when you approach the thermostat. It automatically adjusts its brightness depending on the amount of ambient light.
The one glitch we experienced was I couldn't figure out why the thermostat wasn't adjusting the temps per the schedule set up. My location was inputed properly. I chatted with the amazing folks at Nest and the next morning the times were right. I believe the issue was their data base had us in Central time (which we are about a 10 minute drive from) and Eastern. Now everything works like a charm.
The old thermostat had contacts that clicked every time it started the system, the Nest E is completely silent. May not seem like a big point, but for a very light sleeper, it makes a difference. It linked up nicely with our other Nest products (Nest Protect) and I like the fact that should smoke or carbon monoxide be detected, the E will proactively control the HVAC system so the situation is not exacerbated. Smart.
Couldn't be more pleased with the Nest E.
The app is intuitive and easy to set up schedules, or let it figure out the optimum schedule for you.

We bought this for my mother-in-law for her home and it works great. It is easy for her to understand and she likes that she can use her phone to adjust temperature.
The installation is super easy. We have both this unit and the Nest v2 and both are similar.

I've bought three of these (also one 3rd gen metal thermostat) with the free google mini chalk devices. It was an easy setup, just use the provided stickers to label each of your wires. You should shut the power to your unit so you don't touch the small thermostat wires together during removal of your old stat and when installing the Nest stat, because you can short out your HVAC control board. I didn't shut off the power since I do this for a living and was careful with the wires.
You can use the plastic rectangle base plate or just leave the circle thermostat by itself on the wall.
Setup was easy, just follow the step-step guidelines on the thermostat when you power it up. After a few days I was able to see my power consumption and temp changes on the history trends through the phone app/web app. It can control heat pumps and you can choose when to let the Nest stat use the emergency electrical heating strips also, it's pretty configurable.
It has a motion sensor that will sense when someone is close by (it picked me up in an open area at around 20ft just like my newer model 3rd gen metal thermostat for $249) and then the display lights up. I use my phone app mostly which is awesome especially if you are in bed or if you are at work and you forgot to lower/raise the stat before you left home or your wife texts you to change the temp downstairs because she is too lazy to go downstairs (she doesn't have the Nest app on her phone yet.) The stat learns your behavior pretty good, I don't use the economy away mode setting since I have several family members that are home when I'm also at work. The away mode eventually knows when you leave for work and automatically puts your stat in economy mode and then 15 minutes before you come home from work it will bring up the stat to the temp you like). The stat has a humidity sensor also to give you the humidity. It doesn't display the weather information for your area like the newer model third genertaion metal looking Thermostat (I have one of these also, both the 3rd gen and E stat have the same hardware and software, just the 3rd gen shows weather info and looks nicer, but I don't think the extra $80 for the 3rd gen is worth it unless you want to splurge).
CONS: It didn't come with any sheetwall anchors for the provided screws. I would recommend getting them, the holes are not like the older thermostat hole patterns, I've had to make new holes for all three of my stats, it wasn't a major problem. It does come with a built in bubble leveler to straighten the stat, which I didn't think it really needed, the screw holes are elongated so you can tweak it after you screw it onto the wall (there are two screws for the base plate and another two screws for the thermostat or you if don't use the base plate it's just the two screws.

If you can't afford the Nest - the Nest E is the next best thing - you will still qualify for any rebates and the convenience of adjusting your temp anywhere in the world! Works great and looks good too! Just won't tell you if the unit is on or off which is kind of a bummer. Nest needs to fix that!

I am in the energy efficiency business improving homes with anything from insulation to smart thermostats. I have tried almost every major brand of smart thermostat including Nest, Ecobee, and Honeywell Lyric. The Nest is hands down my choice for ease of install and use, best performance, best app, and greatest savings of all the thermostats we've used. We won't install any other brand and the new Nest E only makes the choice easier. Great price for the best technology.

Love this product. On a mission to smarten up this house and this was the first step. Being able to control the temperature via an app is the greatest thing since...the capability to do it remotely is even better. The device's learning ability is an asset for energy savings. I could go on and on but I'll just mention a couple of more pluses. Aesthetically, the Nest just blends well. The illumination helps guide us through the dark area where it is mounted. The turn dial is perfect. No more up and down buttons. But the best feature of all is that now I don't have to go downstairs in the middle of the night to adjust the temperature. That right there is the best gift of all.

Easy to set up, just needed a screwdriver. Step by step instruction is available on the Nest website. It's compatible with Google Assistant and you can use Nest App as well. It's so good to have the control from wherever you want. I save energy as I turn off heat whenever I want and control the temperature easily without running downstairs to the the thermostat. You can create custom schedules. I like the design and I think price is reasonable.

I’ve had programmable thermostats in many homes, and never bothered to set and use their function. Probably because it’s not clear how to set them, and I have no desire to stand in a hallway for any extended period of time to figure it out. The NEST thermostat has easy to follow instructions that make self installation a breeze (I had no idea what I was getting into as I have never seen the inside of a thermostat.) 20 minutes to install two NEST thermostats for both my systems, and now I have programmed settings using my phone. I’m also embarrassed to say that after 6 weeks I still check my heating/ cooling usage everyday on phone.

This does everything I want and is cheaper than the main model. I bought 2 for my new house with upstairs and downstairs. My only issue was that I tried to check compatibility before I took everything apart and that was cumbersome. The checker tool was inconclusive. I chatted with support, sent the requested picture, and they couldn't tell me anything. Finally, I just gave it a try. I messed up one wire but figured it out. It works as expected and the second install went smoother. I also got them connect to my Google Home and Logitech remote. Overall, I find this a great product.

I've owned a Nest thermostat for 3 years, moved to a new house and wanted another one to replace the one I had. The new Nest E has all the functionality of the full price model. The screen isn't as pretty, but who cares! Easiest installation around, took 10 minutes! Saves about $75 a year on electricity.

I've been wanting to get one of these for a long time. Best buy put them on sale a little so i decided to go ahead and get it. Installation was easy. I used their website to make sure all my wires were installed correctly. Its great, i tell it to turn down the heat at night, turn on higher in the morning then turn it down when I'm away. They say it will help me on my utility bill, i haven't had it long enough to know but i hope so.

I have both the Nest E and the Nest 3rd Generation learning thermostats. The Nest E is as good as the 3rd generation in terms of functionality. It also blends into my wall a little better being the lighter color. The Nest E works with roughly 85% of HVAC systems and if you're unsure if yours is a match, you can check it out online. Super simple installation and setup. For the price, this unit can't be beat.

Replacing my current thermostat was actually easier than I thought. Probably because my wires were correctly colored and labeled.
The Nest E thermostat is pretty nice looking. Not as fancy as the regular Nest Thermostat, but for $100 less, I certainly don't mind.
It 's still "learning", but so far, it has been managing the AC pretty well.

I've been thinking of purchasing a smart thermostat for years, but was wary of the installation and power needs. After doing more research and discovering my HVAC wiring included the all-too-necessary common, or "C" wire, I began my search in earnest for a new thermostat. I've long admired the Nest line of products for their simplicity and smarts, but wasn't interested in purchasing the top of the line Nest thermostat for my small apartment. The Nest Thermostat E offered all the smarts in a more affordable package, and the rebates available from my local utility company brought the price down significantly. Don't forget to check for rebates!
Installation was a cinch, with easy to follow directions. Setup with the Nest iPhone app and the Google Home app were both seamless. Again, having a C wire present simplifies things, and while Nest thermostats don't technically require the C wire, I recommend doing your research first to make sure you're comfortable with the installation and any potential issues that might arise. For reference, I have a newer, "base" model gas forced air furnace and AC system.
Using the Nest thermostat itself is as simple as turning a dial, which makes it easy for anyone to adjust. I like that the Nest displays the current temperature and system status when you walk by, although with my thermostat located in the living room it is constantly turning the display on (you can switch this behavior off, however). The real reason for my purchase of a Nest, however, was to integrate it into my smart home setup, which has worked very well. The Nest is controllable within both Google Home and Alexa setups, with the most full-featured control coming from Google Home/Google Assistant. The Nest app itself provides full control of the thermostat from your phone, tablet and even a web browser. My only gripe here is that Nest is not compatible with Apple's Siri/HomeKit, although third-party integrations are available for this.
Ironically, Nest's headline feature - that the thermostat learns from your behaviors to create a schedule - is nearly useless for me during the pandemic, as I am working from home and prefer a constant temperature day and night. When I decided to spend the summer away from home helping family, however, the Nest really proved its worth, as I was able to remotely monitor temperature and humidity levels throughout a hot Texas summer and make adjustments to save energy and/or control humidity levels as needed.
Honestly, having voice control of my thermostat with Google (or Alexa) is my favorite feature. I can easily set Routines up that adjust the temperature or set the Nest to Eco Mode when I leave to run errands etc., and adjusting the temperature from bed with my voice is delightful (albeit peak lazy). Voice control works most naturally with the Google Assistant, which makes sense as this is a Google-owned company, but basic voice commands are possible with Alexa as well.
Overall I'm extremely pleased with the Nest thermostat. My only quibbles are the lack of native Siri/HomeKit support and the price/features of the remote temperature sensors (for the price, I wish the remote sensors automatically sensed your presence rather than requiring you to set time frames for using a sensor's readings rather than the main thermostat.

I didn't think I was ready for any kind of home automation. If you're like that, this is a great jumping off point. The installation and setup is easy. I’ve been eyeing the Nest thermostat E for a long time and this didn’t disappoint. It’s minimalist design is perfect and doesn’t feel cheap compared to the more expensive metal models. Has all the same features as well. If you have other Nest products than installation will be familiar and easy. Using the thermostat from the app is also a breeze. After 1 day the thermostat started adjusting to conserve energy when we were out of the house. Very easy to set you temperature settings for time and day. It’s great that you can connect this to Alexa and Google as well. Just a few words and the thermostat is adjusting to what you asked for. It’s totally worth every penny and will work great.
