Customers are enthusiastic about the Roomba 890's cleaning performance, ease of use, and effectiveness in removing pet hair. Many appreciate its simple setup process, although some users found the navigation system needed improvement and reported issues with battery life and noise levels. Great Vacuum, But Scatterbrained
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great vacuum for picking up the small messes and crumbs that accumulate on your floor each day. It's simple to use and is very powerful, but it often fails to clean a majority of my floor. PROS: - Fairly easy setup, but allow for a few minutes of planning. You'll need to place the dock in an open area where the Roomba can easily access it. Place the barrier device in front of any room or obstacle that you want the Roomba to avoid. Configuring the smartphone app is also painless and allows you to begin and schedule cleaning via the app. - Excellent vacuuming abilities on both hard floors and carpets. I use the vacuum in the lower level of my home, which covers the kitchen, hallway, office, and dining room. After 5 days of use, I have noticed a huge decrease in the amount of food crumbs, dust, and hair on my floors. - Navigates under furniture very nicely, including my kitchen counter, office desk, and stools. CONS: - This Roomba is scatterbrained at best. If you watch it clean, you will notice that it aimlessly bumps into walls, furniture, and other obstacles until it finds its way around them. There is no discernible pattern to its movement. As such, it tends to completely miss some areas of my floor and spends too much time on others. I've learned to run the Roomba when I'm not home so I don't go crazy while I watch it bump into a wall for 5 minutes. - The dust bin seems to get full very quickly. I typically have to empty it each time the Roomba runs. OVERALL: Is this Roomba going to replace your standard vacuum? No, and you shouldn't expect it to. What it does -- at least for me -- is clean up small messes and debris between my regular vacuuming and cleaning days. I no longer find myself stepping on food crumbs and dust on my floor. If you want a more customizable Roomba, you'll have to step up to a higher model at almost twice the price. Those caveats in mind, I'd recommend this Roomba to those looking to augment their regular cleaning routine.

Underwhelming but still a neat little machine
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first experience with a robot vacuum cleaner and I must say I'm a bit underwhelmed by it overall. There are some neat aspects of the Roomba 890 though. First, the cool and neat bits. The setup of the Roomba 890 was a breeze. Once it's out of the box, just flip it on its back and remove the yellow tags. Then you connect the charging cradle into an outlet and place the Roomba on top and it will begin to charge itself. Very simple and easy. The Roomba is programmed from a smartphone app and this process too was very simple and easy. I downloaded the app from the Google Play Store, quickly registered a new account, created a Wifi connection to my home network, and gave it a name. From within the app, one can set a cleaning schedule, look at its cleaning performance and history, and access troubleshooting tips and help. Actually using the Roomba 890 is super simple as well. You can start the cleaning process by either pressing down on the big "Clean" button on the top of the machine or by starting the cleaning from within the Roomba app. The robot then undocks itself from the charging cradle and begins vacuuming. As for its vacuuming performance, I would say it's pretty good. I doesn't pick up as much as my >$700 Dyson unit but that was expected. After all, the Roomba is much smaller and lighter and it will never be as heavy-duty as a Dyson. With that said, it still managed to pick up an impressive amount of dog and cat hair as well as some fine particles. The bin you empty after a cleaning session is fortunately very to easy to open and clean. Just gently squeeze down and pull it out from the main housing. Pop open the lid and shake all the dirt and hair out. To prevent the Roomba from thinking that the bin is still full, I had to use a dry napkin to clean all four sensor areas. Until I did so, the Roomba kept blinking its red light telling me to empty the bin even though the bin was empty. Now for the underwhelming parts. The robot is pretty dumb. According to LG's grading of a robot vacuum's intelligence level, there are 3 levels - a dolphin, an ape, and a child. The Roomba 890 falls between a dolphin and an ape. I say this because even though it is great at gently and deftly navigating around obstacles and gently slowing down before hitting a door or a wall, its cleaning pattern is all over the place and it never properly finishes cleaning a living space before moving on to a new room. The Roomba vacuumed only around 30% of my living room before moving on to my bedroom. It finished vacuuming about 50% of the bedroom before moving on to the other room where it got stuck cleaning the same areas over and over again until the unit stopped because it ran out of battery. Second, because of its haphazard cleaning pattern and very "short-term memory," cleaning takes a long time. It is much faster to use a traditional vacuum cleaner. What takes 10 to 15 minutes to vacuum manually, the Roomba 890 needs about an hour. I'm hoping with future firmware updates, the Roomba 890's cleaning algorithm will be improved upon so it will properly finish cleaning one living space before moving on to the next. If future updates does improve its performance, I'll be certain to update my review and score. All in all, the techie side of me is entertained and somewhat fascinated by this kind of technology but I'm ultimately underwhelmed and slightly disappointed that this Roomba 890 wasn't more efficient, "self-aware," and intelligent. I would not recommend this to family and friends at its current state.

Does the job, mostly
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This little robot has been really helpful at keeping our 2 bed/2 bath apt clean. It does like to get stuck under our couch and on cords, so we've had to adjust to prevent that, but other than that setting it up was a breeze and no other issues.

Poor Navigation, exchanged for Roomba 960
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have a small apartment and while I originally intended on buying a Roomba 960, I decided to try the less expensive 890 because I don't have a large house and I didn't think the camera-based navigation would be a big deal for me. On the first run of the 890, I knew I was wrong. After 20 minutes of traveling the same places over and over again, the robot found a corner and just kept spinning around, trying to figure out where to go next. It was not obstructed and had plenty of space to go somewhere else in several directions, but it just kept spinning for a good 5 minutes before I shut it off in frustration. I ended up exchanging it for the Roomba 960. This is not a bad robot vacuum (setup was very easy), but it didn't work out for me. If possible, buy the 960 - the enhanced navigation is worth it.

Simple set up!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We bought the room a and the Samsung powerbot. Roomba was VERY easy to setup and performs flawlessly. Always goes back to dock and performs as it should. It quite as powerful as Samsung but more consistent and much easier set up.

||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First Roomba purchase, great black Friday deal. Set up is a breeze and using it is even easier. Nice time saver and gets the floors quite clean. Just need to be sure to pick up stuff that the roomba may try to eat, like cables, shoe laces, etc.

Capable and reliable cleaning
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Setup was simple and the roomba was ready to go in about 5 minutes. Setting a schedule in the app works well, and has been reliable. Alexa integration is nice to have, but with a schedule there really isn’t a need for it. The roomba works best on hard surfaces and low carpets. The dust bin is easy to empty and the low profile gets under most furniture. The room mapping is also impressive. Once an obstacle is detected, the roomba will slow down before gently touching into it, and then changes direction. Once the battery is low, it will return to the base and recharge. The roomba does gets stuck easily on high carpet and a lounge chair base, but the app does alert you when it stops moving. I was able to use the included virtual wall to block off that room. It also got tripped up in an extension cord and speaker cable and is rather loud, but that is understandable. Overall, I would recommend this roomba. It is easy to setup and when it does the job you don't need to babysit it. While it won’t completed replace vacuuming, it will save time cleaning and can get into areas that aren't easily accessible.

My wife likes it so much she gave it a name!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.BLUF: While the Roomba 890 won't change your life or bring about world peace, it works surprisingly well. INTRO: For various reasons, I'd resisted getting a Roomba or other automated vacuum cleaner for a long time. My big concern was how well it would work around the various obstacles in our house, such as area rugs, floor thresholds (between rooms with different types of flooring) and randomly-placed objects like chairs. Obviously, they can't take the place of a normal vacuum for all tasks (like vacuuming the stairs) and it was tough to justify the price. Now that we're several generations into the automated vacuum cleaner era, we figured it might be worth a try. CLEANING: Actually does a pretty good job of vacuuming up the areas it runs over. We're using it primarily on bare floors, so it's pretty easy to tell if it's gotten everything. It will re-vaccum spots if it thinks that it hasn't gotten everything, which helps. The pseudo-random vacuuming pattern is a little odd to watch; it achieves good floor coverage but it takes a while (about 45 minutes to cover our 900 sq ft first floor). It does seem to be getting the job done incrementally more quickly as it maps out the area. We dump the bin daily, and after the first few times, haven't had a problem with it filling during daily vacuuming sessions. (The first few times, it vacuumed under some furniture where our regular vacuum couldn't go and picked up very large loads of dirt.) SETUP: My non-techie wife was able to get the charging station configured without any trouble, and was able to download the iPhone app and get it working with the Roomba - that's pretty high praise for the ease of the setup process. She set up a daily cleaning schedule, and was able to use the iPhone app to fix problems (such as a full dust bin on the first day). Aside from troubleshooting, the iPhone app doesn't add a lot of value; you can't use it to set boundaries, for example, nor can you schedule more than 7 cleaning events. CAVEATS: While the Roomba can get under furniture that we couldn't reach with our upright vacuums, it's not perfect. For example, to get it to vacuum under our dining room table, we have to stack the chairs out of the way, as it's too large in diameter to fit between the legs. When vacuuming with an upright vacuum, you can just slide the chairs out of the way one-at-a-time; you basically have to prep the dining room for the Roomba before it vacuums. Also, because the Roomba follows a pseudo-random process for deciding where to vacuum, my wife gets annoyed with it when it doesn't vacuum the area she wants cleaned first. There's no way to tell it to just clean one room. OH YEAH: She named it Maleficent, after the Sleeping Beauty character.

The robot that tried but missed the mark
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Automation can be great and simplify normal everyday tasks to give us more free time to do what we want to do. The Roomba 890 by iRobot tries to help and take care of cleaning up your floors when you’re not around or you’re just pre-occupied with other things. Depending on where you place this robot, it can definitely handle the task of cleaning up. The problem is, you need a fairly open unobstructed area for this robot to work properly. For example, I mainly used this robot in my kitchen area that has hardwood floors and also has a table and a few chairs nearby. The robot would constantly route itself into the table area and struggle with the chairs as it tries to clean. It made the effort to try and avoid the chair it confronted, only to be met with a different chair and a new challenge. The first time setup is very simple and straight forward. You can give your robot a name and connect it to your WiFi network, so that you can control additional features on the robot. Like setting a cleaning schedule, remotely start or stop the robot, and so forth. The charging base works as the robot’s home base and will make a solid effort to return to the charging base after a cleaning so that it charge itself. As you can imagine, the robot had its moments trying to get onto the charging base and was hit or miss. Overall, this robot is great if you have a wide open space that needs to be cleaned, with little or no other objects in the way of the robot. The simple to use mobile app allows you to know what your robot is doing and control certain functions remotely with your smartphone.
