Excellent mid range laptop for gaming/productivity

I absolutely love this laptop. I use it for both gaming and work. It's currently docked and connected to an ASUS monitor and works great. I also use it along with a Logitech MX Keys keyboard and a wireless Razer Deathadder wireless mouse. I wasn't wanting to spend a whole lot so I bought this on sale during tax free weekend and I couldn't be more pleased. I wanted something that worked as well a desktop but had the portability of a laptop to replace my gaming desktop and give me more space. I read some complaints about the RTX 3050ti but I can say that I haven't experienced any issues myself. I did add an additional 1TB SSD drive in the empty slot and upgraded the RAM to 16GB almost immediately as most people suggested. Even before the upgrades, it ran flawlessly. I have only good things to say so far. I haven't really tested the battery life extensively as it is docked 95% of the time. Overall I would highly recommend this laptop.

I got this laptop for gaming and it is a pretty good budget laptop. It does the job but it does get hot which is fixable with a cooling pad under the laptop which I recommend getting with this laptop if you are going to have it on your lap

    Silent sleeper of gaming goodness

I caught this gem while looking at gaming laptops and decided to take a closer look at it. I am glad I did. The Lenovo Legion 5 2021 model certainly does not disappoint. The overall design has slimmed down a bit from last years model. This year its outfitted with the new AMD Ryzen 7 5800H powerhouse CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads of processing power. Teamed up with 8GB of DDR4 3200mhz ram you are sure to crunch through the workloads easily. Add another 8GB and you are set! The laptop also has the new Nvidia RTX 3050TI Graphics card that provides excellent gaming, The GPU is teamed up with 4GB of GDDR6 Samsung memory for blistering gaming sessions. Round this all out with a gorgeous 165hz 100% SRGB IPS Panel; you are sure to enjoy many hours of gameplay with vibrant colors and silky smooth action. The surprise in all of this is the 512GB NVMe SSD that Lenovo installed in this laptop. The SK Hynix 512GB NVMe SSD is insanely fast. It provides up to 3600 / 3000 mbps R / W speeds. Typically this is one area the manufactures skimp out on and install slow drives to save on costs. Rest assured, Lenovo has your back on this one. I am super thrilled with this laptop and look forward to all the gaming ahead. The laptop has a mux switch included with essentially turns off the internal Radeon Vega graphics and sets the RTX 3050TI dedicated state. This gives you full GPU power. The GPU is rated at max 95w TDP. Definitely not a Max Q variant. *** Bonus - Lenovo provides factory overclocking in the bios for the RTX 3050TI which further boosts performance! Don't let the 4GB of GDDR6 video memory deter you from picking up this silent sleeper of gaming goodness. It has plenty of power and finesse to keep you gaming for hours on end!

Id give 5 stars if it weren't for the price increase. After having this laptop for 3 months, I think it is now a good time to make a good and honest review. Again, This laptop would be 5 stars if they didnt hike up the price by $200 since I bought it 3 months ago. Cannot review battery as i never had it unplugged. But, onto the Pro and Cons of this laptop. Pros- Screen and Refresh rate are top notch for 1080p and no problems reaching over 100fps in a lot of games. CPU is one of most powerful in a laptop and great for gaming but best for video editing. GPU is great enough to play most games in 1440p when connected to another monitor or TV. Memory and RAM upgradability are great and laptop is easy to take apart. Has some great cooling when on a flat service. Highest temps is seen were 80-85c which is ice cold compared to other gaming laptops I used. The best pro (For me as I use it connected to my TV) is the fact that when connected to a TV, I have every option available in NVIDIA Control Panel to change resolution, colors, size, etc. Cons- Not the BEST GPU to use for 1440p but perfect for 1080p gaming. Do not even try 4K. RGB isnt too customizable. but a pro for some is that you can turn it off. lol. Overall, this laptop is great still but you can find RTX 3070 Laptops (or AMD equivalent GPU's) for about $300 more that will give you way better performance. Worst thing about that though is availability. So, if availability is an issue, this is still a great laptop to buy if you can justify the $200 price increase from what it was 3 months ago.

I was looking for an affordable gaming laptop for Xbox game pass since I’m a casual gamer and this delivered. This Lenovo Legion came with AMD Ryzen 7 5800 H and is a surprisingly powerhouse of a gaming laptop. With Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti graphics cards provides excellent gaming. I’ve played Halo Infinite and it’s looks amazing!

Amazing laptop for the price. The only inconvenience is that it doesn't come with the cable that goes from the wall plug to the brick (it's a regular cable that desktop PCs use). It should have included it, but other than that, excellent laptop. I went for this model instead of the 16GB one because it was about $200 cheaper, and with less than $200 I can upgrade it to 32GB. 100% Recommended!

Great laptop for the price. The screen is bright and colorful. The laptop works fast if you update all the drivers before using it. I don't give it 5 stars because the back cover is too weak and hard to open.

DETAILED REVIEW THIS LAPTOP IS A GEM

I am completely new to the pc gaming world, I usually play on switch or console and I wanted to make the switch to pc. I’ll be starting college soon and I wanted to get a new laptop because I didn’t have one so I thought why not get a gaming laptop. I did sooo much research to finally decide on this like I stayed up researching for many long nights and after about a month I was finally able to decide on this Lenovo laptop. This laptop is everything I wanted and more. I wanted a laptop that would be fitting for school as well as my gaming hobby and this is the perfect laptop for it. Don’t let that comment make you think it’s not for professional gaming as it will suffice for your streaming and content creating needs. The graphics are great and if you don’t like the colors (which I am okay with) you can tweak and edit the appearance to your desire in the laptops detailed settings. The laptop, like EVERY gaming laptop I’ve researched does work it’s fans as expected and does get pretty warm but it’s not anything unbearable or crazy. The only time the laptop makes Louder fan noises is when it’s doing something that is demanding such as updating or downloading. But if the fans are in issue for you, you can change the way the system uses the fans in the built in lenovo app that basically has controls to your laptops features which includes the rgb keyboard and the laptops specs. So far I’ve been able to play the games I did on my switch and the improvement is mind boggling. This laptop has seriously stepped up the game for me and I’m so glad I chose it. I recommend this laptop to anyone who is debating getting it it’s seriously a gem. I’ll do an update after using it for an elongated period of time.

First of all, I would like to say that this laptop is great, but is has some problems. The externals first: Build looks and feels solid, a gaming laptop that is stealthy with the only thing visible telling that it is a gaming laptop is the "Legion" wording on the top and the bottom bezel of the screen. Within parameters of regular use: deck flex requires some heavy pressure to show, screen wobble needs heavy typing or a really intense gaming session for it to even move a tiny bit and even at that it is barely noticeable. Hinge it tight, but still 1 finger openable. Weight is reasonable and similar to other 15" gaming laptops. Despite it's plastic build, it feels like a premium laptop while still offering ease of upgradability. The ports are exactly as described, but it is good to note that there is a physical switch to turn on or off the webcam on the right side and that the USB-C on the back part of the laptop does support charging. So for those trips were you don't want to carry that large charging brick around with you, you can opt for a smaller charger; gaming performance will get impacted as you wont be able to get enough power. To give a perspective on how big the charger that comes with this thing comes with... the footprint of the charger is as big as an iPhone 12 pro Max with a thick case on it, but add half an inch around all sides, then add another one on top of that; that is how big the charger of this thing is. Granted this is may or may not be an issue for some people, but at least there is an option when the day doesn't require that much power. Keyboard has RGB zone lighting, 2 levels of brightness. Lenovo put in a really good keyboard on this device. It is not Cherry MX switches, but it has a good feeling to them. Satisfying click to them with just the right amount of travel. However, there is a downside to this keyboard setup; there is no physical control to adjust brightness for it. You must go through Lenovo's Vantage software to adjust brightness, since the macro (Fn + Spacebar) switches profiles instead. But since you can have "profiles", you can set it up where each "profile" is a brightness adjustment instead. Screen is a 1080p 165hz Freesync (G-SYNC capable if set to only GPU use). It can get decently bright (300nits) for outside work, but also dim enough where you don't feel like you are looking at the sun when using it in a dark room. It had decent color gamut for the price, but probably not good enough for any serious work that requires color accuracy. The Vantage software does have an "panel overdrive" option to improve response times, but I personally did not notice any difference with it on or off. The trackpad is large and responsive. It has a nice clickyness to it too. Only thing I can say bad about it is that it is that your hand grease will stick to it quite easily. Now the internals: I'll start with the bad parts about it first to get it out of the way. The fan noise, WiFi chip, the 8GB RAM and the 4GB VRAM. The fans are audible, even with "silent" performance setting, they do not turn off. The Vantage software has no fan speed control. And they do get loud when under heavy load, close to 52-53 decibels estimate. Though this does keep temps low, so that is a trade off. From what I've read online, people who have tried to re-paste the CPU and GPU only helped with decreasing temps and does nothing to reduce fan usage/noise. The WiFi chip. It's a mess, even with the update. There are times where it suddenly cuts out/disconnects, there are also times where it simply slows down to a crawl even when it is less than 4ft away from an access point. Good thing the chip is upgradable, cheap and is easy to get to, but it still sucks that you would need to even do it to begin with. The RAM. While I'm no expert when it comes to PC components; I do have a basic understanding that having a single stick of 8GB RAM performs worse than having 2 sticks of 4GB RAM. Also, this computer being a Ryzen processor, it wants good RAM to perform at it's best. At least the device has no soldered RAM, so it is full upgradeable. Again, easy to upgrade; but still sucks that you have to do it. Now the GPU. The RTX3050 Ti with 4GB of VRAM. This really goes to any laptop with this chip or it's weaker sibling the RTX 3050... That 4GB of VRAM simply nerfs any device with any of these 2 chips equipped. So much performance is lost simply because of it; to put it in retrospect even the previous generation's chips, the RTX2060 and the GTX 1660 Ti, can perform better than the RTX 3050/Ti because of those chips have more VRAM. But with all that said, that doesn't mean that the chip is completely bad. It can run modern AAA near max/high setting on 1080p easily (mostly on medium though), e-sports games like Apex, Valorant, CS-go, DOTA2, LoL, Fortnite etc. run great thanks to DLSS and improvements that this newer generation has. The speakers are inoffensive. It is passable in every sense. Not too loud, but not too quiet. Doesn't distort and sound tinny. Sound quality is decent across the board with nothing standing out. Back to the positives. Cooling is great on this device. On stress tests, it didn't thermal throttle. 95.1 CPU and 81.2 GPU (ambient temp was 23.8C or 75F). High, but that is normal for gaming laptops. The battery. This device has a 60Wh pack inside. While it is not breaking any records with it's run time, on a typical non-gaming use case (some Youtube, emails, and Excel/Word use) and using every single battery saving features turned on (50% screen brightness, reducing refresh rate to 60hz) I'm able to squeeze 6 1/2 hours out of this thing, while gaming only nets me 1 1/3 hours. For those who are seeking more battery run time, it should be known that the battery can be replaced with an 80Wh version quite easily. The Ryzen 7 5800H is great. This is partly the reason why this device is able to have this much battery run time, it is both efficient and powerful enough for demanding tasks be it professional or creative works loads. To me, this device is near perfect with it checking everything I need for my use case of work, some mix of gaming modern AAA titles with some casual ones sprinkled in and that rare occasion that I want to draw something on a Wacom tablet. Since I got this on sale + open-box with the device condition still looking like it was simply pulled out of the box to see what it looks like then put back in the box for $789.99, I can live with it's faults. Original price though, this would be an incredibly disappointing device for its price as the competition has better options for the same money. Overall, the laptop has some issues that some people will not be able overlook. The GPU being the biggest issue, which is a valid reason to be turned away from this device. But if you are the type of gamer that does not need to play the latest games at the highest graphical setting or a casual gamer and is looking for a laptop that can double as a work/school/college laptop, this device might be something to consider (if you can catch it on sale).

Thank you for choosing the Lenovo Legion 5 15 Gaming Laptop, model number 82JW00BFUS. This high performance gaming configuration requires an external 230W slim tip (3-pin), power supply - AC adapter/charger, 100-240V, 50-60Hz, to properly power and charge the internal battery. USB-c can only provide a maximum of 100W and will not properly power or charge the computer under heavy workloads. This model configuration ships with a 15.6 inch (screen size measured diagonally) IPS - FHD (1920x1080) screen, with a brightness level of 300 nits, has an Anti-glare Coating, a refresh rate of 165Hz. This screen provides 100 Percent of the sRGB (72 Percent NTSC) color gamut for excellent color accuracy. This screen is Dolby Vision, Free-Sync and G-Sync Certified. This screen uses DC dimmer for added eye care. You can use Lenovo Smart Power to manually control fan and system performance: ( Fn + Q ) option to change the fan by undervolting the processor. Also use your Power Management settings within Legion Vantage Dashboard Software to set your Power Management Settings for your workload for optimum cooling and system power performance. This model configuration ships with the latest WiFi-6, 2x2 802.11ax frequency WiFi (Realtek - WIRELESS Wireless,CMB,LTN,8852AE M2 Wireless LAN adapters, Lenovo Part Number - 5W10V25797). If you are getting less than expected WiFi performance, check to be sure you have the latest version of Windows 11 on the computer. Then update all BIOS files and drivers up to that latest version of Windows 11, including the BIOS files and drivers controlling WiFi. You can easily accomplish this by scanning the computer with the Lenovo Utility software available on this computer. This system has Lenovo utilities installed to help maintain the health of the device and keep the operating system software up to date. Type "Lenovo Vantage" in the Cortana Search window (if Lenovo Vantage is not installed on your device, you can download the APP and install it now). Select Lenovo Vantage from the list. In the window that opens, click on "Health and Support". In the expanded menu, select "Hardware Scan" In the window that opens, select "Run Quick Tests". This will scan your entire system for errors. Follow any directions that may pop up. If the problem continues after this scan, now click on "System Update". First select Windows update from the menu. Scan your system to be sure you have the latest version of Windows 11. Once that scan is complete, select "Additional Updates". This will scan your device to be sure there are no new BIOS/Driver updates needed. Follow any instructions that may pop up. If you get a message that there are no updates currently available, you can directly update/reinstall the WiFi Driver within the Windows 11 Operating System on this Laptop. A year into owning and i am Highly satified with this laptop. Besides battery life being short.. but thats expected with a graphics card like this. It plays even top games like Cyberpunk 2072 with no problem at top setting. I upgraded to windows 11 and i also use vmware to run sometimes 2 instances of linux on my external monitor with no problem. Only problem i had was easily rectified... the ammount of storage and ram.. i upgraded to the max 32gb of ram (used a standard midline grade 'crucial' brand ram i got for about 70$) and i add a secondary 1tb ssd (WD - BLACK SN750 Gaming NVMe 1TB PCIe Gen 3) i goy here at bestbuy for 130ish... installing botj was extremely easy and quick .. all in all a great product.. highly recommend

It’s you’re someone who likes opening up your laptop then this is great (actually what I wanted) but if you don’t then I’d look at other models. First, out of box pros: -screen is great, lots of color and games look awesome -the laptop itself looks great with a dark blue finish with black trim -rgb in the keyboard has 4 presets and can be customized with iQue program. Also keyboard has a great feel -the 3050ti is great for my purposes, i played destiny 2 and battlefield 5 so far and enjoyed the experience. The 4gb of vramm though can hinder some new games from running on ultra settings so if you want that you have move up to a laptop with 3070/3080. Cons (that are fixable) - so the 8 gb of ram is one module instead of two with 1rx16, so if you want 16 on a budget you just need to buy 1 8gb stick 1rx16. But I would recommend 1rx8 sticks as they perform better. You can tell if the stick has 8 chips (1rx8) or 4 chips (1rx16) - battery isn’t great but can be upgraded to the 80wh which is around $100 online. Other upgradable -WiFi card can be upgraded to WiFi 6e in the future which helps with longevity. -it has a second m.2 ssd slot so you can add a lot of storage! (Could also do a 2.5in ssd but you’re stuck with the 60wh battery if you do that so you’re call) -Also for Linux users, WiFi card and screen brightness does not work out of the box, there are fixes for this though. WiFi works for me now but the brightness isn’t even tho it works with other people so might need the newest kernel. Over all a great laptop for the price if you’re willing to open her up which honest you should learn if you can. If you’re on a budget this is great fo upgradability if you’re someone who can’t buy a new laptop every few years.

    Cautiously Optimistic, with Caveats

Please note: My review is based on early usage and testing. Ultimately this is a "recommend", but I wanted to share details that could be considered NEGATIVES, but may only be CAVEATS. Software OS: Came with Windows 11. No surprise, I rolled back to Windows 10. "Bloatware" software: Be aware that some of the particular hardware installed on the machine can insist on software that could be considered bloatware. I have not (yet) encountered anything I couldn't deal with/disable. Biggest NEGATIVE: My laptop was missing (from the motherboard PCBA) an SATA connector. The service manual gave no indication that this model was incapable of adding a SATA. BOO BOO BOO. I was able to add a second NVMe drive. I bought this with the expectation of a quick drop-in addition of a legacy SSD SATA drive. Battery system: Casually, the batteries are what I consider to determine life of laptops. The internal battery pack is smaller than previous generation of Legion 5. I have had past lifetime issues with the BIOS battery in Legion 5 systems. I don't typically use this system disconnected from wall power, so I cannot attest to battery life under all circumstances. Power system: I was somewhat surprised that the laptop came with a (required) 230W supply. During periods of intense video activity, it feels like the supply is doing the work (as opposed to internal laptop circuitry - GOOD!) My experiences with Lenovo laptops (Legion 5, Thinkpads), Lenovo docking stations (Thunderbolts), and Lenovo power supplies (65W, 130W, 230W) has been VERY UNEVEN. I don't use this system with a docking station, nor do I use an external monitor, but be aware that the general public does report a variety of issues that appear to have a common root cause of "power demand and distribution is not obviously something Lenovo considers". The ONLY issue I have observed (that might be power system related) is that when loading the "backplane" USB connectors with peripherals (bluetooth, multiple USB drives) that I've seen some unresponsiveness in those USB devices... something to keep an eye on. External connectivity: Generally, I am satisfied with the availability of external connections (Audio, video, USB/USB-C, ethernet). The "backplane" does have two adjacent USB connectors which are required for some external drives (very good!). I have yet to fully exercise some of the connections is all the ways I expect to, but it is nice to not have an immediate "show stopper". I have not tried to exercise internal Bluetooth functionality. Notes on my usage and its limits: I primarily use this device for "office" applications, web connectivity, and audio/video editing. I have verified that I can install/run certain (older generation) of video games (via Steam, personal installs) but I have not logged many hours using this system for that purpose. I would have preferred to also have a touchscreen (for digital recording of signatures) but I can live without it, and don't mind not paying for one (or having something else that could "go wrong") The single internal 500GB SSD would probably have been OK, but I expanded my storage using the second slot (see caveats above). NVMe was the only option. I have not expanded memory: the 8GB (ultimately less) has been ok, although for some of my processing needs I do feel like I could stand to expand... I simply have not done so yet. My purchase was during a "discount" period. This was not an "impulse buy", although I do feel like the sales cost was at the higher end of what I was willing to pay for the hardware. Generally: I have been satisfied with Lenovo laptops, but I don't recommend them unequivocally.

    Great laptop!

This Laptop is GREAT! Especially if you already have a more powerful Desktop! Link below for Benchmark in Warzone! The 4GB may limit you for Ultra Textures in future games, for sure, but you can bet yourself high fps using medium/High settings, also this has DLSS! I have tested DLSS in RDR2 (AVG 80 Fps with High/Mix settings), and Warzone (AVG 120 FPS). It also has a MUX switch, you need to turn off Hybrid Mode in Lenovo Vantage, or you can also cannot Laptop to Display Port. Temps are the coolest I have seen in any gaming laptop, and the fans are not so loud either! I highly recommend this budget laptop for college students. I use Visual Studio code! Also: UPGRADE the RAM to 32GB (2x16GB) using crucial 3200 ram. You can run a crucial application (google it) to find exact ram. RAM can be upgraded (2 slots). You can add an additional m.2 SSD (has 2x M.2 SSD slots). Legit Laptop! Again, perfect for college students, and perfect for those who already have a powerful desktop, and just need some mild horsepower on the GO.

I got this when it was on sale last month and I am so glad that I did! It works great! The fan can get a little loud, but it is definitely keeping the machine cool so I honestly cannot complain about it. I have not had a chance to use certain things like the webcam/microphone so I cannot review those, but this has been great for gaming, and remote work! Crisp display and seamless gameplay on the highest graphic settings all around! I will be upgrading the memory eventually, but it really isn’t even necessary. This machine is a beast!

    Better than HP Pavillion Gaming

I originally purchased the HP Pavillion gaming laptop awhile back that BestBuy sells, but had to return it due to manufacturing issues. I was going to repurchase it and it ended up being sold out and this Lenovo Legion was on sale for the same price. I saw that it had a better graphics card and I did a detailed compared and decided to buy it. I will say I think I like it a lot more because of a few things. The battery does not last too long off the charger, but with battery saver mode and low settings it manages for a good amount of time. I keep mine plugged in when gaming all the time just because it runs optimally that way, and I can have my graphics settings turned on high with no lag. Compared to the HP Pavillion, the keyboard and software is so much better, you can customize colors and effects on the backlit keyboard, unlike HP Pavillion. And there is also a built in equalizer/sound software that come with the Lenovo Vantage control panel for the laptop. Overall this laptop is great for multitasking for school and work, and runs great for games (Splitgate for reference ran great on High setting while plugged in). One of the best features in my opinion are additional fans on the sides of the laptop , as well as manyyyy ports, I believe 4 USB ports, 2 ports that you can plug a fast IPhone charger into which I absolutely love, HDMI and ethernet ports which many are in the back of the laptop which I really like so they do not get in the way. Overall, great purchase!

    Great poor man’s Alienware

Powerful, lightweight, poor man’s Alienware style, gaming computer. Key sections can be customized with whatever colors you wish to set them to. All in all this computer runs great. The only issue I have run into is the cpu seems to get overheated, the cpu going into hibernation/standby mode at that time to force the system to regulate its temperature. This situational issue seems to only occur when the computer is running multiple Adobe programs simultaneously. Along with other memory draining software like chrome, and the oodles of Microsoft programs auto running, I’m not sure if this is a malfunctioning heat regulator, not triggering the fans to regulate the build up of heat, or if I need to adjust what applications are necessary to start Windows to minimize memory use from start.

Please check the requirements and compatibility of the specific game you are playing (of the specific software you want to use). We recommend you check with the game's software publisher's web site for their compatibility with Windows Home 64-bit (Chrome, Android) operating system and the minimum/recommended hardware requirements (Is a Graphics card required, the processor speed and the minimum required system RAM and the minimum available hard drive space) to run their program, then compare those requirements to this system's configuration. You can also use Lenovo Smart Power to manually control fan and system performance: ( Fn + Q ) option to change the fan by undervolting the processor. If the issue continues, we recommend you call Lenovo Tech Support at: 877-453-6686. Lenovo

Only complaint is the backlit keyboard doesn't have the option to turn off. If you can get it on sale, it's a great deal in my opinion. I have another laptop studio I use for work and this for gaming and I just can't be happier. It plays league at over 100fps without max settings. I recommend you download the geforce app for the graphics and do the updates along with all the window updates. As well as optimize the game settings within the GeForce App to minimize the CPU usage and keep the fan usage and laptap cooler. No need to max the thing out it. Has the RTX 3050ti which is plenty. You are playing better than an xbox one with low settings so why push it. i've only gamed on it, therefore can't comment on the battery life since it's never been unplugged while turned on, Can't comment on longivetity or quality of the laptop as far as how long it'll last. I've only had it a few weeks. I will update though.

Bought this for my wife so she can enjoy sims 4. Definitely handles that game well which isn't surprising giving the specs for it. overall works great for anything my wife likes to play. plan on upgrading the ram in the future if she runs into issues.
