When it comes to my interest in Mario games, my interest gradually declined. I suppose it had to do with my more increased investment with Sonic over the years. I gradually stopped buying the mainstream Mario games after Sunshine. The only other mainstream Mario games I own are Paper Mario 2, and Super Paper Mario. I even quit buying the Mario Party games. Mario Kart is the only Mario game series I'm still interested in. For the game itself, this was a pretty strong installment. A fair number of unique characters, but my main gripe is the gimmicky ones. Some of the characters that are just cheap knock-offs of the more original ones could've been replaced with more returning characters. I was kind of disappointed that Boo wasn't a returning character, since he's my favorite to use in Double Dash and Wii. The addition of the Bowser children is a good one. The tracks are all really stylish ones. Once again, there are 8 cups: the first 4 being the new ones, and the other 4 cups being Retro tracks. With the new anti-gravity feature, this feature has been incorporated into the older tracks, making for some interesting gameplay. There is also the option to play online: worldwide, regional, or even with friends. Two people playing on the same console have the option to play online together. The game allows the use of the Gamepad, Wiimote, Wiimote and Nunchuck, and the Pro Controller. I recommend this game for any Mario Kart fan and even any gamer that enjoys racing games.

The new levitation and under-water parts are as smooth as one would expect. There wasn't much of a learning curve. The new tracks, karts, and characters are all wonderful additions plus there are returning favorites. If you liked Mario Kart in the past, this is another fantastic entry into the series. Additionally, the game looks gorgeous in full HD with 1080p at 60f/s. There are little attentions to detail around every turn. The new courses honor thwomps and other secondary characters in creative ways that feel right. Unlike Sonic all-star racing, this game was easy to pick up and play from the start. You will probably win your first cup on your first try, but it gets harder. Sonic gave me control issues that required too much unnecessary skill and practice before I even started to make some headway in the game. The gamepad is integrated well into the game, not forcing anything unneeded, but providing extra awesome. My favorite was to have the track displayed so I could check where the other karts were on the map. That brings me to the new battle. I think the change is awesome. You can battle in one-player mode with customizable settings on the real tracks. There were full sets of karts for the one-player battle, so I don't know if multiplayer will feel space, but single player did not. This is going to be the go-to party game. It appeared to be pretty flawless so I thank Nintendo for putting the extra effort in. Hopefully there are surprises too, for when I get more time to play further in the game.

Amazing game with several minor flaws

This, to me, may be the best Mario Kart I have ever played. The controls are rock solid, I felt like I actually had to do some trial and error to find the right kart/bike/atv combination for me, and the races are even more intense than ever with 12 racers during one race instead of 8. Nothing feels gimmicky (for a Mario Kart game), and even playing Single Player at 150cc provides a pretty good challenge. It's common to get wrecked by 3 or 4 shells in a row, which at first just seemed unfair but provided a good sense of chaos and urgency during the races. The flaws of this game can be overlooked since the game as a whole is incredible, but they are worth mentioning and I hope that some of these will be / can be adjusted via an update. -The screen on the gamepad reflects what's on the screen, not just the player using the gamepad. So if you are playing with 4 people locally, the gamepad shows all 4 screens. It's a minor thing, and yes that player can just look at the TV for a bigger screen, but sometimes when you're holding the Wii U gamepad, you want to lay in a comfortable position and just look at the screen that's in your hands instead. -The map / player places during race / what items players have, are all on the gamepad screen. You have to switch between views to see them. This isn't a big deal if you play mario kart 7 on the 3DS because the map is literally right below the main screen, but when looking at a TV then having to look down at the map is ridiculous. And of course only the player with the gamepad can look at the map. There should be a map either in the middle of the screen when playing multiplayer, or maybe when there is 3 or more players, the bottom right corner should be the map and the gamepad person can just look at that screen. -The items in the game are great, but you can no longer hold an item behind you and pick up another item. Even if you are holding it, it'll say you still have the item and won't let you get another one until you shoot it. This is very different from all other Mario Kart games. It's something that I do not like but can see that it adds a bit more strategy and risk taking to using / getting items. With all of the flaws aside, I am having so much fun with Mario Kart 8. Is itiworth it to buy the Wii U for this game alone? I would say yes, especially since you can get a free game of your choice (Wind Waker, Wii U Party, Pikmin 3, and new Super Mario Bros Wii U). Depending on a bundle you may get, you could potentially have 3 games from the get go. The gameplay is rock solid, you will find a challenge, even if you are experienced, and though the online mode leaves some things to be desired during waiting rooms, the races themselves will leave you frustrated or cheering with victory. Mario Kart 8, get it.

    A Kart Game for Everyone

As a lifelong Mario Kart player, Mario Kart 8 is a fresh and exciting take on the series. The tracks available in the game are wonderfully created with the care of detail only Nintendo can give to its games. Some tracks can make your jaw drop for how great it looks for Nintendo's first Mario Kart game in glorious HD. The controls feel fantastic to drive the characters around as well as the weapon balancing is the best I've witnessed in a Mario Kart game. The added "gravity tires" give the series a new perspective from different angles that makes the racing much more exciting to play. The game offers enough varieties of cars/bikes/ATVs for everyone to choose along with the endless selection of tires and gliders to give the user the vehicle of their dreams. My experience with 12 player online play has been relatively lag free! My only complaint of the game is that battle mode available in these version is not as good as previous entries. Instead of dedicated arenas, players (a maximum of 12) will use the available tracks to use as the "arenas" for the players to battle. It is not as exciting as the tracks tend to be bigger than the regular arenas which can cause a lot of players to wander around the track looking for others to battle. I've had the game since launch and it is definitely worth the full price of the game as it is a beautiful masterpiece full of a wonderful variety of tracks with a ton of vehicles to use and customize. The wealth of multi player options for online and offline play is fantastic. One or two player online play is fast and frantic, with hardly any lag experienced during my play time. Mario Kart TV brings in a new experience to the series and can be a joy to watch the character's faces and emotions when the highlights are playing. While the battle mode was a series staple, it's lack of dedicated arenas shouldn't put a damper on the amount of content available, which in itself is a staggering sum and the available local play for up to four players between friends and family will make the game that much more exciting and worthwhile! I will be playing this game for years and years to come!

Mario Kart 8 is a slick and gorgeous-looking kart racer that's perfectly solid and always as exciting or addictive as we've come to expect from the series. I've been playing it a lot since I bought it home and I have to say it's the best one since Mario Kart 64. I've enjoyed them all but the weapon spam and AI rubber banding in some of the later ones have gotten ridiculous. MK8 is really well balanced and the fact that there's now a counter to the blue shell has made the world of difference to me. I love the new tracks too and I don't think they're too wide and forgiving at all. But even the little tweaks like Lakitu saving you much quicker and faster recovery from item hits makes the races flow much better. And the N64 Rainbow Road is the best ever.

This game is really fun, it is worth every penny (and more)! Much like all other Mario Kart games, you pick your favorite Mario character, customize your kart and race! There are plenty of boosts, jumps, and items to make each race great! Race to unlock new characters, courses, and vehicles. There are 32 levels total; 16 brand new, 16 classics from previous games (all levels unlockable at 50cc)! Additional features, include battle mode, team race, online racing! The new thing for this game is anti-gravity, so courses now bend sideways and upsidedown. Driving-wise nothing changes except hitting into things gets you a boost. My favorite feature is the replay (MarioKartTV) after each race; it allows you to focus on individual racers and re-watch the mayhem again and again! You can post your videos to youtube (very slow) and watch the best videos from other racers, too! 16 additional levels will be available (half now/half in May) if you buy the $12 DLC from the Nintendo eshop. It's a great deal, and the current 8 new levels are awesome! Even without the additional content, this game is a blast to play with friends and online for hours and hours! I can confirm that you can play with wiimotes (with or without nunchuck), the gamepad, and the controllers that plug into the wiimotes.

I've been a long time fan of Mario Kart games so I was bound to enjoy this one. The graphics are great, the controls are tight, a variety of well thought out tracks, etc. The only real negative I can think of is the lack of dedicated arenas for the battle mode. This was a bit of an oversight on Nintendo's part but I am not docking them for it. This game is just too fun.

Great Tracks! Great Characters! Fun kart unlocking and customization! Take two local players online! 4 player local multiplayer! Grand Prix, Time Trials, single races. However they took battle mode and got rid of the battle arenas. Instead you're thrown on to a small selection of race tracks taken from the main game. This is not a great time.

I have very few negative things to say about this game. If we didn't already have a Wii U, my husband and I would have bought one just for this game. The graphics are beautiful, and really it's just so FUN, whether you're playing alone or with other people. My only complaints are that you cannot choose between horizontal and vertical split-screen (vertical only) when playing with two players, and most of the remade N64 courses are hardly anything like the originals. I mean, seriously, Toad's Turnpike is a figure eight in this latest installment! Anyone who's played Mario Kart 64 would remember all the twists and turns and various routes to get to the finish line. I was so excited to see they remade the N64 version of Rainbow Road, but then I was super devastated when I actually played it. The entire race is 3 short laps that make one full loop. Really? I guess I'll just have to break out my N64 to experience Rainbow Road in all its glory. At least they did Yoshi's Valley justice. Anyways, despite the few negatives, I would definitely recommend getting this game if you haven't already! =)

This is the best Mario Kart yet. The graphics romanced my eyeballs, and I don't even have an HDMI connection! I can't imagine how great it is on and HD TV with an HDMI connection. The game allows the player to choose whatever controller he or she likes. The player can even control the Game Pad steering with either the joystick or the motion control. I only have 2 criticisms for the game. First is the retro courses. Most do not look like their originals. They are redone so much, they roughly resemble the old course, but they are really a new course. Second, is the unlocking. I appreciate the game making something worth playing through, but at the start, you only have half the game unlocked. I appreciate starting with all my options available

This was a fun game if you had a WII U, good game to play until Mario Party and Smash Bros are released. There are many tracks as usual and the different CC makes it a challenge. The Character roster is somewhat wanting more. Overall great Nintendo game.

As a Mario Kart fan I expected much from this game, especially waiting so long after the wii u was released. The visuals were done exceptionally well and made the game feel bigger than past games. As for the actual gameplay I found myself becoming overly frustrated with the AI. It seems as though the AI was programmed to eliminate your very existence from the Nintendo universe. This made things difficult if you are trying to unlock everything. I'd say starting off fresh without any unlocked karts or wheels you might better start on 50 or 100cc to get use to the new feel of the game otherwise you might feel like breaking something around you. In the end once you get the hang of everything and the driving mechanics feel natural the game is fun, but in the beginning it felt like 90% luck and 10% skill. At times it still can feel that way. Truthfully holding the #1 position in the first two laps of a race don't seem to hold much value, because once that AI wakes up and realizes what's going on the turtles began homing in. As mentioned in other reviews, if your not having fun step away from the game and take a breather because a game isn't worth stressing over.

I used to play a lot of Mario Kart on SNES and N64, and was somewhat satisfied with what the original Wii provided. Honestly was a bit skeptical with Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, but once I got my hands on it I couldn't put it down. It's very fun and can be competitive if desired. The tracks are inventive with shortcuts not heavily pointed out (most are discovered by accident, experience with Mario, or watching the CPU racers hit them). Highly recommended to fans of Mario Kart and those who enjoy racers and the Nintendo cast.

I've been a fan of Mario Kart since I was super tiny and every time there's a new Mario Kart game i get super excited. This game, on the wii u looks fantastic! the controls are great and it is so much fun. You can play with your family or with your friends depending on the occasion. The only gripe i have is that it seems like the games are getting easier and easier with time. Other than that, Mario Kart is a classic Nintendo game that i will continue to purchase and play. Definitely a must buy for any new Wii U owners out there!

The Best mario Kart to Date!

The latest entry in the beloved Mario Kart series not only lives up to the hype, it greatly exceeds it. The first you you'll notice are the graphics. They are smooth and in full HD. Also, the game runs at 60 FPS in single and 2-player modes, and a still-crisp 30 FPS in 3 and 4 as well as online. The new courses are fresh and innovative, and many take advantage of the new anti-gravity feature. It's a fun twist on gameplay, and really adds a new element to the strategy. Another fantastic element is the highlight reel that plays after each race. The player is able to customize the replay, and even upload it directly to YouTube. Online play is quick and fun, with little downtime between races. Not being able to chat with the other players between matches is a bit of a letdown, but it is the only way Nintendo is able to regulate the interaction between players and keep it fun and safe for gamers of all ages. The only complaints I have are very minor, nitpicking even. Each racer is only allowed to hold 1 item, so there will be some long stretches where you will go without an item if you're not careful. Also, there as so many small racers on the track due to the inclusion of so many baby characters. If you have the console already, this is a must-own title. If you don't have the Wii U yet, now is the time. There several great titles, and this is the best to date. You can even choose from 1 of 4 free games to download when you register the product through Club Nintendo on Nintendo.com. Overall, this is the best game for the Wii U so far.

Mario Kart 8 provides more or less more of the same from previous Mario Kart installments. That isn't a bad thing to me. There are great new courses as well as updates to some familiar classic tracks. The only complaint I have is the same as in previous Mario Kart installments, the computer cheats too much when they are behind, nothing is worse than being on the 4th race of a Grand Prix and getting hit with a blue shell, lightning bolt and red shell back to back to back on the third lap. Other than that great game.
