Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the engaging gameplay, compelling story, and innovative Nemesis System in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Many also praise the game's beautiful open world and responsive controls. However, some players find the difficulty challenging, and a few note limited replayability after completing the main story. The game's strengths clearly outweigh its weaknesses for most players.

This game is phenomenal. It's the Arkham combat system and stealth system mixed perfectly with the movement and platforming of Assassin's Creed. The very best of both worlds, and appropriately gruesome and gory! The story is great, the gameplay is awesome, the graphics are phenomenal. This is the most complete game on PS4 so far.

Middle Earth: Shadows of Mordor is an open world game in the same vein as games like Assassins Creed, Grand Theft Auto and the recent Batman Arkham games. You have your main missions, side missions, collectibles....and a horde of orcs to deal with. The gameplay mechanics overall are very solid. Navigating the (smallish) world is a breeze, moving Talion around works very well, and the button layout is one of the best out there. Everything that you need and want Talion to do, he will do - with the exception of the occasional clipping issue that may cause Talion to not move quite where you want or need him to here and there (does not detract from the overall experience in my opinion though). The combat system is very similar, though not quite a copy and paste, to the Batman Arkham games. It is an excellent combat system that works exceptionally well for this kind of game. Graphically the game is very pretty, but certainly not the greatest when comparing it to some recent exclusives that have come out on the PS4/Xbox One. However, you will not be disappointed. The game is very brutal, you will see a lot of blood and a lot of orc heads fly off of their bodies - and it is glorious. One of the greatest additions to this game, thanks to the horsepower of the current generation of consoles, is the sheer amount of enemies on screen at any given time. I have been surrounded and chased by as many as 30 orcs at certain points in the game, and although at first it can feel a little overwhelming, once you get a hang of the combat system, level your character up, and just get a good feel for the game in general, it is a pretty awesome feeling to take out so many on screen enemies. The difficulty of the game is one of the greatest aspects for me. It's not stupidly difficult, nor do you ever really feel cheated by the difficulty. It's just a hard game, and you have to learn how to play the game well enough to cope with that. You will die - probably a lot - but you will learn from those deaths and learn how to not die so easily. Personally I feel that I am a very skilled game player, and although I feel like I am dying "a lot", I never feel like the game is being overbearingly difficult. As you level up and gain new abilities and just learn how to play the game and use all of those abilities in tandem, the game becomes much easier and more enjoyable. The story is nothing to write home about, but it's solid and does the job it needs to do, namely take you through Talion seeking vengeance, and the learning about the mysterious spirit that guides him. I had several laugh out loud moments during some of the cutscenes thanks to witty dialogue and well performed voice acting. The nemesis system has to be one of the greatest gameplay mechanics I have had the pleasure of playing with in recent video game history. As you fight orcs, and die to them, they will gain power and rank up. When you kill an orc Captain, a void opens up for another to take his place (only after you die though). You may find yourself dying to one orc over and over again - each time he gets stronger and ranks up (ranking up can give them extra perks, such as extra bodyguards) - and when you finally do get the better of him, it is a very satisfying feeling! Overall this is a really excellent game and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys open world action games. You will not find a lot of the standard "Lord of the Rings" fare here - this is a story that stands on its own within the LotR universe.

This has to be one of the best games currently our for next gen consoles. Between amazing graphics, flawless gameplay, and a unique nemesis system, it's no wonder it's won many gaming awards. As far as gameplay goes, it's controls plays out EXACTLY like the Batman Arkham games. That is to say your gameplay is via two attack buttons, grab, and counter. The game is Arkham play in a LOTR universe. If you like those two things, you'll like this game, period. If the combat system in Arkham wasn't your thing, you may not like this as much, but for a fan of that and the Lord of the Rings universe you will be super happy with your purchase.

Visually, the game looks great. Graphics, environments, character models, animations, atmosphere etc. all greatly done with a lot of detail. Facial expressions are excellent, game is simply a pleasure to look at and the world feels alive with all the enemies constantly around and moving about which in turn makes you feel immersed in the world. Gameplay wise, it's very good and the nemesis system is virtually never ending. Even after just finishing the game, there's new War-Chiefs and Captains that you can kill or brand. Love the ability to gather Intel to unlock the enemies strengths and weaknesses. When you die is when the nemesis system really kicks in. The Uruk that kills you gets a promotion and others get promoted as well. Best thing is that when fighting a Captain or War Chief who killed you, they'll taunt you the second time. While im not going to go into detail about the story as I don't want to spoil anything, I will say as someone who's never seen The Lord of the Rings movies, I enjoyed the story a lot and for what it is. Having only 20 story missions and learning how to brand an enemy 80% through the story was a letdown as you should have learned it and other stuff earlier. The different objectives and varying missions were satisfying. Never got bored. Did get aggravated, annoyed and frustrated at times but again, that has to do with my main negative. Enjoyed the ending but the final battles left a lot to be desired in my opinion. I'll leave it at that. Overall, very enjoyable and satisfying. Overall, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is an excellent open world hack and slash game with a beautifully detailed world, good story, excellent music, sound and voice acting as well and a solid upgrading system. The nemesis system virtually adds a never ending feel to the game. Definitely worth playing and while it's not saying much, Mordor is easily the best game of the year thus far and kicks off the final quarter of 2014 in excellent fashion.

Shadows of mordor was one of the funnest games for me that I've played on PS4 so far. If not the funnest. The only that ive had this much fun playing is probably Far Cry 4. I was looking for an action game with swords and upgradeable abilities but also open world. And it is exactly that. It's fun and the graphics are awesome. You can be stealthy or just jump in and have a huge brawl, whatever your preference. For me its Easily in the top 3 games for PS4 so far that I've played. And I've played quite a few.

If you're on the fence about this one, it's absolutely worth picking up. It plays a lot like Assassin's Creed so you'll be doing a lot of sneaking and killing. The nemesis system is what really makes it worthwhile. As you kill orcs (and die) the ranks change and Sauron's army is constantly in motion. It makes things feel much more personal and adds to the fun. The story fell a little flat for me, but that's personal opinion. There's also a bit of a learning curve at the start, but once you get the hang of things there's a lot of fun to be had here in creatively dismantling Sauron's orc hierarchy.

I was late to the party with this game but I understand now how it received so many accolades. There's tons to do and it's fun doing them. Plus the nemesis system is something that not only sounds like a cool idea but is implemented very well. I spent most of my time chasing down those who killed me in order to exact some revenge. If/when a sequel is announced I won't wait so long to pick it up.

I'm not usually into the hack and slash games but it has the perfect amount of RPG to keep things interesting for the entirety of the game. Dont have to be a LotR fan for this game definitly stands alone. Never really have to wait to long for a new upgrade to spice things up in battle. Game starts out extremly difficult and its suppose to. Dont be dicouraged it balances out quickly. Nemesis system is a blast and it was nice to see something innovative in a video game now a days. Gameplay is a replica of Batman archam city. Very fluid and becomes more fun the more you unlock. All in all I fully enjoyed this game(100% completion) and is no doubt in the top 3 of my favorite PS4 games thus far. Not that there was much competition but this revived my hope for the current Gen. I'm sure this game is great on all platforms only reason I gave it 4 stars is like most sandbox games things can get pretty repetitive by the end with sideas missions and such.

First and foremost this is a great game that you should definitely buy. I bought this game after learning of all the rave reviews, and the fact that it was game of the year in 2014. I am a patient gamer so I rarely purchase games before I have been able to thoroughly research it. To be honest the fact that this was game of the year just shows how little was/is available. This game does not introduce anything radically new or different outside of the imperfect nemesis system that you can easily exploit and the story including the ending is all pretty typical. That said, boy is it fun and extremely addicting. This is one of those games where you look up and realize you haven't slept or eaten and that you are beginning to resemble a character from the very game you are playing. Now that the game is discounted I especially recommend and proudly give it 5 stars.

You like Assassin's Creed? You like the combat system from Arkham Asylum? You like Lord of the rings? Seriously, do I have to go any further with this? No really, do I need to go further? Cause if those three things don't pique your interest, why are you even reading this anymore? The game play is smooth and the story is pretty good. The small added addition of being able to terrorize your enemies and make them stronger so you can get better rewards is awesome and the combat is neigh flawless. Worried that death will get in your way? Nope. You die, the enemy that killed you gets stronger. And he insults you. That's a double cool point there. It's got a good history of LOTR information and the landscapes are wonderful. Controls are smooth and tight. Get it. Or you could just sit there and let Lord Sauron's forces ruin the day. Think of the hobbits. THE HOBBITS, MAN!

Thoroughly enjoyable, straightforward and tight mechanics, immersive environment. The orc nemesis system is a welcome change to this style of game, removing the standard cardboard cut-outs most games of this style make out of enemies. But there's more to the game than just that. One of the best in its genre.

The combat is fluid and dynamic with your character making amazingly cool moves. So much fun to watch. The open world concept is great, letting you go practically where you wish at any time. I also enjoy the way that most missions can be done in different ways and have different outcomes that effect the game as a whole. The nemesis system and orc ranking is a really neat feature. It is what originally drew me towards this game. It adds a level of fun to the game and gives it a little more depth overall. Not generally being a fan of games that are based on movies, books or TV shows, I must confess that I really do like this one. Its good for many hours of play

Shadow of Mordor is a triumph...

It’s surprising just how good and inventive Shadow of Mordor is. So many things are done right. The open world is packed with distractions from the main story, but almost everything you do feeds into it. SoM's story is split evenly between the Nemesis System and scripted missions. Each side of the equation depends on the other. It's beautifully designed. Unfortunately, cracks start to show toward the end, where things get a lot more cutscene heavy, boss fights start relying heavily on QTEs, and your previous machinations aren't shown to have any tangible effect on the final showdown. But, as with The Lord of the Rings itself, it's more about the journey than the destination. Shadow of Mordor is a triumph, its final irony being that it's arguably the best and most pure Assassin's Creed game to date.

I really enjoyed this title as the combat was very similar to the Batman: Arkham games, both WB games. The nemesis system was a lot of fun and brought a unique aspect to the game. This is a good title if you enjoy Tolkien's world, as well as mindlessly going after orcs!

Shadow of Mordor came out of nowhere and shattered my expectations. It is not the typical cash in license title with great production values and graphics. The game borrows generously from Assassins Creed's parkour style movement and Batman Arkham fighting techniques to create a fun gameplay experience. The Nemesis system will be copied by other games since it has a personal vendetta aspect to the game. It is a open world that fits right into the LOTR and Hobbit films and acts as a complement to them. The voice acting is generally good but is stilted at times which is disappointing. This is a game that I hope has a sequel but there will be some new story DLC content to tide you over as part of the season pass.

I haven't played too much of this game yet as I am focused on Destiny right now and the controller play is too different for me to jump back and forth. From what I've played though, the game is very story driven even though it is open world and there are enough side missions to keep you occupied for hours.
