Excellent speed and the additional focus points and control of points have been lovely to shoot with. I am also very happy with the image quality over my previous Nikon D700. It has so far been a worthwhile upgrade.

I had my D810 for 18 months. Loved it. Sent it in for annual cleaning. BestBuy broke it, replaced it 2 times with a used camera. I still want another D810. I have best buy store credit but best buy will NOT sell me a new one.

The ugly part: shipping:
The only big disappointment was when I received the box at my home, it was wrapped in a slightly larger cardboard box and the insane shipper had popped the bubble packs just to squeeze it into the undersized shipping box. They didn't even properly tape the box and it was about to open along the bottom. Fortunately, the shipper was careful and my camera arrived intact and undamaged.
The great part:
The 36Mp FX sensor is really appreciated having had a 24Mp D750 which in my opinion made wide angle pictures a little too pixelated for my preferences. Meaning, if say I took a picture of a leaping Dolphin at 25 yards using 24mm, I couldn't blow it up much. With the D810 I can blow up pictures a little more and for me, it's acceptable.
The 810 is the first time where I had to RTFM because many features are buried in menu or by combined switch toggles. Yet, these features let you better control the parameters of your shooting experience in ways unimaginable to most. Your reading and experimenting will pay off big time with this camera. For example, defining a minimum shutter speed and forcing the camera to increase ISO to keep your action pictures crisp in varying lighting conditions.
Quality of build - the camera feels solid, minus the slight clanking noise emanating from near the flash unit. I believe that this is a sensor of some type and the noise, given my shipping issue, was initially of concern. Just don't shake your camera much.
What it is not:
It's not a camera for everyday "just snap without thinking" picture takers. True, this camera in default settings will allow an inexperienced person to take great pictures. For those, stay with a DX, series you will be happier and the lenses there are much less expensive. The 810 and its FX lenses are understandably much heavier than the DX counterparts and require top notch tripods to handle the weight. They are bulkier thus requiring more storage space.
