I game across all current-gen consoles and also run a high-end PC (13th-gen i9, 64GB DDR5, RTX 4080 Super FE). I picked up the ROG Ally X because I’ve been traveling frequently for work, and at home I have a toddler who completely owns the TV... this device fills that gap perfectly. The Device: The Ally X is extremely comfortable, even with large hands. The speakers are genuinely impressive and easily outperform many PC speakers I’ve used. The display looks great, and overall build quality feels solid and premium. Performance: I’ve tested a wide range of use cases: ROMs, Steam games, native PC installs, Xbox-installed titles, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Almost everything runs flawlessly. I did notice minor frame drops in very high-action games like Marvel Rivals and Arc Raiders, but only during moments when there was a lot happening on screen. Outside of that, performance has been excellent. Battery Life: Battery life has been solid and better than expected for a device of this power level. Cons: My only real complaints are minor. For the price point, the included cardboard stand feels cheap... a simple hard plastic stand would have been more appropriate. Also, while I appreciate having full Windows 11, I wish there were a simpler, more streamlined handheld mode when using the device undocked. Overall: This has been a fantastic purchase and an ideal solution for traveling or gaming when a TV isn’t available. Powerful, comfortable, and extremely versatile.

The ROG Ally X is definitely a game changer — having the ability to play Xbox Game Pass titles natively alongside your full Steam library on the go is unlike anything else on the market. It bridges the gap between console and PC gaming in a way that feels seamless and powerful. Performance-wise, the upgraded internals, longer battery life, and improved cooling make it a huge step up from the original Ally. The controls feel responsive, the display is vibrant, and the build quality strikes a nice balance between premium and portable. What really makes it special, though, is freedom — you can play anywhere, whether you’re diving into Halo Infinite through Game Pass or jumping back into your favorite indie hit on Steam. The ROG Ally X isn’t just a handheld — it’s a true hybrid gaming device that brings console-level experiences to your backpack. Verdict: Asus & Xbox has nailed the balance between performance, portability, and accessibility. For gamers who want to take their Xbox and PC libraries on the road without compromise, the ROG Ally X is an easy recommendation.

PROS 1. Excellent Ergonomics: Fits comfortably in the hand, making it easy to hold for long sessions. 2. Lightweight Design: Perfect for extended use — a factor often overlooked by many reviewers. 3. Strong Performance: The 17W mode delivers impressive power and efficiency. 4. Outstanding Speakers: Loud and clear with one of the best soundstages among handhelds. 5. Whisper-Quiet Operation: Virtually silent — no distracting fan or system noise. 6. Perfect for Travel: Compact size makes it ideal for portability (though at the cost of a smaller screen). 7. Future-Proof Potential: Plenty of room for improvement through upcoming updates, especially the NPU update. 8. Good Controls: Triggers, buttons, and sticks feel solid and responsive (though XYAB buttons are a bit noisy). 9. Good Battery Performance: Offers two hours of back up even on AAA games. 10. Surprisingly Effective Sleep Mode: The sleep mode via Armoury Crate works well and is more reliable than expected. --- CONS 1. Small, Non-OLED Screen: The 7-inch display feels cramped and lacks OLED quality. 2. Slightly Overpriced: Could be at least $100 cheaper — every dollar counts. 3. Noisy XYAB Buttons: Too loud for late-night gaming when others are sleeping nearby. 4. Fullscreen Mode Glitches: The fullscreen experience occasionally has glitches but also shows strong potential for improvement through future updates.

The ROG Xbox Ally X is exactly what I wanted a handheld gaming PC to be. Powerful, comfortable, and flexible without feeling gimmicky. Performance is the standout. Games run smooth, load times are fast, and it handles modern titles far better than I expected from a handheld. Whether I’m playing natively, streaming via Xbox Cloud Gaming, or using Game Pass, everything feels responsive and polished. It genuinely feels like a real PC in your hands, not a compromised “mobile” version. The screen is excellent. Bright, sharp, and smooth, with a refresh rate that actually matters. Games look great, text is easy to read, and it works just as well for quick sessions as longer playtime. Ergonomics are another big win. The grips are comfortable, the buttons feel solid, and the layout just makes sense. It feels closer to an Xbox controller than most handheld PCs, which makes the transition seamless if you’re already in that ecosystem. Battery life is noticeably improved compared to earlier handhelds. It’s not magic, but it’s finally good enough that I don’t feel chained to a charger for normal play sessions. Software has matured a lot. Between Windows flexibility and Xbox integration, you can play almost anything you want, however you want. Steam, Game Pass, emulators, cloud streaming, it’s all there. Once set up, it’s surprisingly smooth to use day to day. Is it perfect? No. Windows on a handheld still isn’t console simple, and it’s not cheap. But if you want the best blend of handheld convenience and PC power, this is currently the best option out there. Bottom line: the ROG Xbox Ally X isn’t just a niche device, it’s a legit portable gaming system that actually delivers on the promise. If you want one handheld that can do it all, this is it.

As an avid pc gaming enthusiast handhelds have always turned me off because they didn’t seem like they could produce the quality I was looking for while gaming. My last handheld was the psp/nintendo ds and after that graphic quality just mattered a lot to me. This exceeded my expectations just enough to keep me hooked on this device months after purchase. I rarely write reviews but this one was worth it for me. AAA titles on decent quality settings and it doesn’t skip a beat. Even handles fallout 4 ultra settings on 17W only. Efficient beast! And last but not least let’s not forget this is truly the most comfortable handheld to hold at the moment. If you don’t know the Xbox controller is the best controller as far as hand feel goes and this feels exactly like one. You don’t really feel the weight in your hands, it’s amazing. 10/10 from me bro. If you get one I recommend securing an ssd with heatsink as fast as you can I think a 2TB upgrade is more than enough as that’s double what it comes from factory and even when I had 1TB I still had tons of games installed at once.

Been using the ROG Xbox Ally X for about a week, and overall it’s an awesome handheld. The new design feels solid, the battery life is much better than the original ally x, and performance in most games is excellent — smooth frame rates and no overheating issues so far. That said, for the price, I really wish it had an OLED screen. The current display is good, but not great compared to other premium devices. And Windows still feels clunky on a handheld — the Armoury Crate SE helps, but it’s buggy and not always stable. Overall, great hardware and power for its size, but the software experience still needs serious polishing.

I absolutely love it! I even bought the legion go 2 to compare both models and I ended up keeping the Rog and returned the legion go bc when I was playing forza I noticed on the m4 BMW the front grill was disordered and the ROG graphics were way better to me. Side note I even added a screen protector from Best Buy it was a little pricey but worth it bc it gives you that oled display. The battery life is great & is really comfortable to play on! Overall 10 out of 10 highly recommend.!

I love this device! I use it while waiting for my son during his therapys, or if my wife wants to watch someting im just not into. That being said there are pros and cons to consider. Pros. 1. Long battery life, I have yet to run out of power while playing. 2. Great performance I have yet to find a game that will not play with satasfactory frame rates and settings for the screen it has. 3. It is comfortable to hold for extended time. I have played it for hours and my arms are fine. 4. It supports all the major games stores steam, epic, gog, ea, and ubisoft connect I have them all installed. 5. You can use this for production if needed use a dock hook up a mose keyboard and monitor and you are good to go and its not half bad at those things. Cons. 1. A bit of a learning curve for updates and settings. 2. This is a pc and as such sometimes you have to play with settings to get a game to play. 3. The screen is very nice but I wish it was 8 inches.

A power compromise between polish and performance

I picked up the ROG Ally X primarily to work through my Steam backlog, and after spending time with it alongside the Lenovo Legion Go S (2Z) and Steam Deck, I’ve found it occupies an interesting middle ground in the handheld PC space. **The Good: Raw Power** Where the Ally X truly shines is performance. This thing has the horsepower to handle demanding games that would struggle on other handhelds. The increased power translates to smoother gameplay and the ability to push settings higher than I could on the Steam Deck. More importantly, running Windows means I can play my entire Steam library without compatibility concerns—including multiplayer games that simply won’t work on the Deck due to anti-cheat issues. That alone opens up a significantly wider array of gaming options. **The Trade-off: Software Inconsistency** The Ally X’s biggest weakness is the Windows handheld experience. It’s frustratingly inconsistent—sometimes everything works beautifully, other times you’re wrestling with Windows UI elements clearly not designed for a handheld form factor. It lacks the polished, console-like experience that makes the Steam Deck feel so refined. You’re constantly reminded you’re using a Windows PC shrunk down, for better and worse. **How It Compares** Compared to the Lenovo Legion Go S (2Z), the Ally X is notably better overall—more reliable, better build quality, and a more cohesive experience. Against the Steam Deck, it’s a different calculation: the Deck offers superior software polish and that “it just works” feeling, but the Ally X counters with broader game compatibility and more raw performance. **Bottom Line** If you want maximum game compatibility and don’t mind occasionally tinkering with Windows, the ROG Ally X is an excellent choice for catching up on your Steam library. Just know you’re trading some of the Steam Deck’s elegance for the freedom to play anything in your library—multiplayer and thats why ill be keeping it and returning the other .

I bought the ROG Xbox Ally and the shopping experience was very good from the start. The process was fast, the order arrived on time, and the product was perfectly packaged and in excellent condition. As for the device itself, it totally delivers on its promises. The screen is spectacular, very smooth, and with great image quality. The performance is solid for gaming, and the ability to use Game Pass, Steam, and other platforms on a single device is a big plus. It feels like having a portable gaming PC. It's important to note that it runs on Windows, so it requires a bit of initial setup, but once it's ready, the experience is very good. The design is comfortable and the quality of the product is evident. Overall, I am very satisfied with both the purchase and the store's customer service. I would definitely buy here again and recommend the product to anyone looking for a powerful and versatile portable console.

I love this little system. I own a Steam Deck and an original ROG Ally Z1 Extreme and this handheld is amazing in comparison. Pros: 1. The ergonomics are great. It may look funny but it feels like you're holding an Xbox controller in your hands and my hands never got tired or felt like they needed to take a break. 2. Battery is solid, gives you great playtime (mileage will vary though based on what you play and settings chosen). 3. Triggers, buttons and sticks feel great 4. Integrates incredibly well with Xbox. I play games natively but also sometimes stream from the cloud or remote play from my Series X console. 5. Multiple storefronts. I love that I can play Steam games AND Xbox games on this device. I can even be in the UI and launch a Steam game directly from there. 6. 1080p gaming without sacrificing FPS (frames per second). It runs AAA games incredibly well. 7. Variable Refresh Rates (VRR) screen helps games look even better Cons: 1. UI is still working out some kinks, but there are updates at least once a week so it's constantly improving.

TL;DR I love my ROG Xbox Ally X, though it’s not without its downsides and the positives I have may not be positive for other users. And if you upgrade the storage, use a new NVME SSD to avoid headaches, trust me. The ROG Xbox Ally X really improved from the original ROG Ally. I’m comparing these two because I bought the original Ally and I now have repurposed it as a family PC that my parents love using. Though also because it’s a direct upgrade coming from the Ryzen Z1 Extreme in the Ally, to the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme. I do love the direct upgrades from the ergonomics of holding the console to making upgrading down the line easier for consumers to venture into if they want to expand their storage. Some other things I love is how much more smooth it feels compared to the original Z1 Extreme Ally. Personal likes I have is Xbox’s integrated full screen experience, though it is accessible on other handheld consoles. I also like how it runs full windows, though it’s because I’m very used to navigating windows as a PC gamer and long time windows user. I do plan on using this Ally as something I can game on the go with, as well as a station I can have outside the house, put on a desk/connect to a tv, and connect a keyboard and mouse to have a gaming PC on the go. The problems I have with this product is that ASUS is pretty bad with customer service and not helpful for the personal problems I have. I was trying to use an SSD I already had from my PC to used in my ROG Ally. I contacted customer support for the manufacturer of the SSD and ASUS. The SSD manufacturer tried their best to have me use it but to no avail; ASUS was worse and just told me the obvious saying that it doesn’t work. If you use a used SSD with the ROG Xbox Ally X there’s a chance it might not make it through the whole cloud installation process and end up in an installation loop. This is easily solved with a new SSD. I know because I bit the bullet, bought the same exact SSD I tried to use new from Best Buy. And the install worked flawlessly. Me figuring out this problem took days and this experience as well as the small drawbacks of the ROG Xbox Ally X and made me bump it down to 4 stars.

I am constantly wowed by what this machine is capable of. It can run games such as RDR2 and Doom at a pretty consistent 60fps. Battery life is great. Can play AAA games for two hours and indie games for double that. The speakers are amazing. I was amazed on the quality when I loaded up Forza. Once you get the hang of it, everything is easy to use and navigate. There are some minor bugs and freezing, but it doesn't take away from the experience. The buttons are also a bit clacky if you are in a quiet environment. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for their first handheld!

Awesome handheld PC, never owned one before and i liked the idea of a streamlined handheld PC that made it easier than steamdeck to have access to epic and steam and xbox. It totally delivered on everything it promised to be. Even though its an xbox branded item don't expect it to be an xbox, it is a PC so not all xbox games are avaliable but a lot of work has been done to make most new games work on PC or xbox, you'll mostly miss out on xbox classics games. Its battery is great, its not too loud but the buttons are a bit clicky. I don't ever hear the fan really but i havent had to turn it up to its max performance mode yet. It is expensive but considering its better than any laptop I've owned I'd say its worth the price. The full screen experience for the handheld is awesome, i have had zero issues and unlike early reviewers it is installed and ready to go out of the box.

The Xbox Ally X is a very performant handheld for its price point of $999. It beats all other handhelds at that price, and with a slightly more premium version of the Z2E, the Z2E AI. Unfortunately, the "AI" part of the name is currently meaningless, as AutoSR, the automatic upscaler that will take advantage of the TPU to automatically upscale all games to the resolution of the connected display, will not be available until next year. Despite this, it still performs greatz around 50% better than the Steam Deck. And its 120hz VRR display makes all games look smooth without having to lock to a specific framerate like on the Deck. And the ability to enable specific driver settings on a per-game basis, such as Radeon Chill, is another nice bonus over the Deck, though the Deck can do most of it. With all that out of the way, I'd like to make one thing clear. This is NOT a 1080p machine. The display is 1080p, yes, but in most games you will need to rely on upscaling or very low settings to achieve that resolution. Some exceptions, of course, like Forza Horizon 5, which I've found runs great at native 1080p on, if I remember right, medium settings. It would still run well on high, I just wanted a good frame rate for that game. On turbo mode, it can run Cyberpunk on native 1080p as well. For this game, that is my preferred way to play, because something about it just looks off when using upscaling to me. Though that's true no matter where I play it. But like I said, these are exceptions. I noticed that more often then not in FF7R (both games) it would run 720p or below, for example. And the CPU shows its limits when I try playing games like Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, where the CPU really matters. I'm curious about Starfield's performance, but I don't have time to test that one. Note that while the CPU certainly isn't the best it's still the best you can get in a handheld. I almost forgot to mention the really good ergonomics. As someone with arthritis, it's difficult for me to hold most handhelds for long periods of time. But I have had no issues with this. Turns out designing it like a controller with a screen in the middle was actually genius. I have treated the PlayStation Portal too harshly. While the performance on the Xbox Ally X is solid, albeit not quite as good as Microsoft advertises, the main flaw with this device lies in the software. Xbox Full Screen is a HUGE step in the right direction, but it feels like it wasn't quite ready for a public release. It works well for the most part, but it does have bugs. And it often fails to load the proper icons for third party launcher games. Someone recently made a Game Bar widget available in the widget store that can help fix this problem, however. Armoury Crate works well for the most part, but there is one big flaw. Being a Windows handheld means that this cannot download games in sleep. Armoury Crate attempts to remedy this by allowing an option to assign the power button to only turn off the screen when the handheld is plugged in. However, this setting frequently turns itself off, which is very frustrating to me. And the sleep mode doesn't work well at all. I replaced it with hybernate, which, despite the slower startup time, is much less headache-inducing, and I highly recommend it. I am also annoyed by the lock screen occasionally just not working, forcing me to restart. This rarely happens, but I think it shouldn't happen at all. Updates are also really inconvenient to deal with. You have to go to the Microsoft Store and Windows Update practically every day to keep things up to date, and sometimes the updates don't even work properly and you have to restart. Of course, a lot of the problems here could be resolved by just switching to a build of SteamOS, such as Bazzite or ChimeraOS. But I keep Windows because of Game Pass, as well as a few Windows-only games (like the previously mentioned Xenoverse 2). TL:DR — The hardware is solid, and as far as handhelds go this thing is a beast, especially for the price. However, the software is far from a smooth ride, and it seems Microsoft has a long way to go before the next Xbox arrives. I hope that all these flaws will be addressed in updates over time. It is highly likely they will. The jankiness isn't a dealbreaker, but just keep it in mind. This is not a console. This is for people who are fine with PC jank but just want to get a little bit closer to a console. I can look past these issues, but I'm sure the average consumer can't. To me, I give it 4 stars. Though my hope is that this will change.

I bought the ally x day one, loved it, had over 5000 hours on it, i bought this xbox ally x around dec 11th. It is definitely worth the upgrade. The 3.5 rdna architecture is better then the ally x- meaning the terrain and background , hair, water , leaves , trees all that looks ALOT more realistic. The battery lasts the same which is a good 2.5 to 3 ish hours on 17 watts, which will play black ops at close to 60fps or higher with amd software frame gen. On 85 inch 120hz tv Spiderman remastered with amd frame gen no upscaling and in game frame gen looks flawless, spiderman 2 looks amazing but has some ghosting when running very fast up buildings. The fingerprint reader works alot better then the rog x. The grips ARE AMAZING. The machine doesnt get hot, the screen is good - wish it had HDR. But when connected to TV it outputs HDR. I do not use xbox experience- no need to i love the windows and the steam setup. I cloned my rog x ssd to a 4tb samsung pro 990 and put it in immediatly and it opened and did some updates - maybe one or two and works flawless. You do need to know how to do the settings with amd adrenaline software and in game settings to acheive ps5 level look and performance. But this is as close to a ps5 as you can get and its the only handheld with the NPU that does the A.i. tech without using GPu. If you can afford it with the best buy credit card 2 years no interest 45 a month wow. Best gaming invention ever in my opinion with windows and steam you have unlimited gaming options in your hand and tv.
