If you love the previous series Shenmue 1&2, you will love this too! Compared to yakuza series, this game has more stories and character development, suggest playing the first 2 games.

It's Shenmue for Better or Worse

The Shenmue franchise has been a love it or hate it game for over 20 years now. While being a competent game in it's own right, it still feels like a game that is older than it actually is. The style is a living and breathing open world with people having schedules and while this is great it comes with faults like having to waste time until a character comes back to complete a task and wasting your time by doing so. The gameplay works well and while still feeling a little stiff overall functions well enough to feel like some evolution has happened over the years. Story, eh, kinda drops off with sequel bait later. It is an okay game but Yakuza exists. Just play that for a better overall experience.

I remember playing Shenmue and Shenmue 2 on the Sega Dreamcast back in the day when I was a kid. Those games were unlike anything that I had ever played at the time. When Shenmue III was announced, I got excited to see how the story continues since the previous ends with a cliffhanger. Shenmue III is not going to appeal to everyone. You don't need to have played the previous games since there is a video that catches the player upon the events. However, the control mechanics might seem a little 'clunky' to some gamers. I don't want to spoil the plot but you will be spending some time on a small Japanese island before the game really opens up, allowing you to savor the little details of arcades and shops. Speaking of which, it's the details that make Shenmue III special. Need to build strength or progress in your martial arts skills? Then you can chop wood or visit a dojo that will teach and test your new skills. The voice acting is decent but sometimes has some cringe dialogue. I can't tell if this was intentional or what. Overall, Shenmue III is a game where you just sit back and relax and appreciate the backdrop of the 1980's Japan. I really hope that there will be a Shenmue IV on next-gen instead of waiting 18 years between parts II and III.

Shenmue 3 (Review) Well after 2 decades Shenmue 3 finally arrived and I finished it, the big question is how did it feels. The game starts right after where Shenmue 2 ended and immediately you realize that it's a familiar world. I am not going to spoil any story here but game consist on Two main areas Bailu Village and Niawou. Graphics: There is absolutely no doubt that game environments are beautiful and well detailed, kudos to Yu Suzuki for maintaining the same graphical theme as the previous Shenmue games. Main Character looks good but NPCs are some what feels off and weird and you can feel where the team took a short cuts due to budget constraint. Performance wise the Frame rate is uncapped on PS4 mostly ranging between mid 30s to 40s on base PS4 Source (Digital foundry) and native Resolution on Base PS4 is 856p and 1080p on Pro. Overall Game is Beautiful and uniquely created. Sound: Shenmue 3 sound tracks are absolutely beautiful, it give the game same vibe as the previous games did. Yu Suzuki Used Old Tracks from previous games and also included some new ones. Corey Marshall once again provided voice acting for Ryo Hazuki and I was so surprised that his voice didn't change a bit in last two decades, however dialogues are as clumsy as they were before. Gameplay: Gameplay wise game improved from its predecessors and felt good, The new fighting system is well balanced and addictive. I want to give a credit to Yu Suzuki and it's team for not only carrying out the old game mechanics but also adding some new tricks to it. Verdict: Let me be clear on one thing Shenmue 3 is not for everyone but if you loved the previous games then you are gonna love it also. In this modern era of games Shenmue 3 is different and unique, credit to Yu Suzuki and his team for retaining the original Shenmue vibe. This is the game made for fans and I am very happy to finally played it. If you want some thing unique and different then you should try it out. 8.5 out of 10

Most gamers today have probably never heard of Shenmue. For us long time gamers and Dreamcast fans, Shenmue 1 and 2 were two solid games with a great story, fantastic graphics, and a good mixture of different game styles. Of course games have evolved since then, but for people who loved playing the first two on their Dreamcast, Shenmue 3 is a must buy.

Shenmue is an incredible series that set the tone for modern gaming. Shenmue 3 is a great continuation of the story we've been dying to see continue for almost 2 decades. Do yourself a favor and buy this game. Don't forget to pick up the originals in the Shenmue 1 & 2 collection so you can experience the entire series. You will not regret it. The steelbook is really nice too.

I know others are knocking this game down saying it is missing a lot from Sega. First this is made by a indie developer that loves the series and put their hard time getting this game out. I like it and love that it picks up where the second story ended in the cave. If you are new you need to play the first to really understand the story. Still this may not be for all but for true fans this is a great game.

This is like playing a game you found in a time capsule that was never before released - it's pure nostalgia. Shenmue I was immersive; the atmosphere drew you in and you found yourself wondering if you were Ryo or yourself at times. This does the same, though you are in a rural part of China instead of a Japanese city. It has the charm of the first - mini games that would be mundane tasks in real life are somehow exciting, the cringe worthy dialogue that leaves you wondering what was lost in translation, and the karate fight scenes keeping you guessing which button to press next. I haven't finished it yet, but I've played quite a bit and can already recommend it to someone who enjoys a slow burn type RPG or misses the Dreamcast days.

For most people this game may feel a bit primitive, but for fans of the series that began life some 20 years ago, this is a dream come true. This is a series that began life on the Sega Dreamcast, ported part 2 to the original Xbox, re-released both original games on PS4, and finally gave us fans an official part 3 after a nearly 20 year hibernation in the middle of an epic story. All of the gameplay mechanics and game feel has been retained from the originals (for better or worse) and gives series fans a moment to revisit and return to the life and living world of Ryo Hazuki. For all of the shortfalls in regards to modern gaming standards that can be pointed out here, it excels at reminding you of a time when open world games were learning everything they knew from the cutting edge and forward thinking Shenmue franchise that was blazing the trail for all to follow. Considering this was mostly fan funded, you have to tip your hat to Yu Suzuki and his team for giving us everything they could for a fraction of the top tier modern games budget.

...that said, the controls and overall gameplay will take some learning and getting used to since it takes cues from the last 2 games of the series (with the last entry being released over 15 years ago). However, as a fan of the series, this was a fun and suitable follow-up to the 1st and 2nd games. **Two Thumbs Up**

A really great game that is unfortunately let down by poor dialogue and voice acting as well as tedious gameplay. However, the scenery and story are very solid and push this game to its limits.

Hmmm when shenmue 1 came out it was something new and unique and something never done before .. while 2 other developers had progressed the open world genre ... it was clinging on by a thread ... part 3 on the other hand does nothing to offer current gamers , it offers no new experiences ,it is nothing ground breaking .. this is a game that should have been made in 2001-2005 .. the game play mechanics are severely put dated though it does have its moments it shines .. some interactions were memorable .. while many others fall flat .. the progress you made as Ryo in part one and two I feel we’re all lost .. in part 3 Ryo feels dumber , and as if he has not fought in the actual 18-20 years the game has been in development hell ... you look find Ryo struggle with enemies who he would’ve beaten down in part 1-2 which I find it very odd ... that he does not remember any of his training... the story has many inconsistencies, and to many gaps that leave you wondering what just happened .... the ending falls completely flat , and was a very horrible horrible boss battle , if you can even call it a bosss battle ... shenmue 3 is not all bad . And again it has its good moments . But the game is truly lacking , npc popping up on screen in thin air and just magically appearing . It’s very easy to max out your character , combat is very sluggish and you don’t feel like you are actually hurting your opponent ... no throw moves .. npc dialect is very limited ... some of the characters models are horrible .. the American voice acting is even worse than part 1 and 2 ... just play the game in Japanese you will thank me later ... I would only recommend this game for shenmue fans ... the ending is straight up dog crap ... and leaves you with a sour taste in your mouth ... don’t go on here expecting anything spectacular ... I suppose we will have to wait for another 18 years for shenmue 4 and another 18 following that for shenmue 5 .. yu Suzuki should have just closed this chapter and ended the saga once and for all .. or even just add the remaining chapters as a story add on for part 3 put part 4 & 5 as dlc and call it a day

I will gave 4 stars just releasing the SHENMUE 3 back which last game release was 20 Years ago which I was in Freshman year of High School. Game play got much better and smooth with lots of fun. They took out the Time sequence which you have to worry about the time in game so that is good. Also it is great that they have Japanese dialogue and Audio to choose since I prefer playing in Japanese mode. -1 Star is the graphic, only it looks much different from Shenmue 1&2 so it looked different character and also look like PS3 graphic so I had to take 1 Star. BUT if you are SHENMUE fan, You must get it and Best Buy will provide you the Steel Book for collection which look amazing.

Good game and tranquil and a throwback of the old days. The facial animations are close to terrible and Ryo male main character voice acting is stiff as a manican. But I like the whimsical story and community feel and the combat is not too bad. It not worth $60 but I got it at $5. It was on sale for $10 and I used my $5 store credit. I never played the other 2 games besides maybe a demo in the store. I never had a Dreamcast. I only played on Atari, Coleco vision and PS.

Shenmue 3 arrived quickly and safely. Bought it on sale for $8. The game also came with the steelbook which is a great bonus. I find the game fun and charming. It's cool that I now own all three Shenmue's. Can't wait to continue playing the game.

Extremely fun game with beautiful graphics. I am a casual player but had a really enjoyable time with this game. The game allows you to move at your pace. Some of the dialogue can be a bit weird but outside of that, the game is fantastic.

Shenmue is more of an acquired taste, I definitely enjoyed my experience but the combat was a little off. Over time you get used to it and figure out how to time it correctly, but still a good story sequel. I bought it on clearance, so it's definitely worth something checking out. The game will be of greater value when the sequel will be released if anyone is interested in having mint conditioned games for their collections. Otherwise a good game overall, but with room for improvement.
