Sneaking, sneaking...sneaking, and more sneaking. If you thought this may have been closer to Resident Evil 4 or 5ish type mechanics, think again. Most of my time has been spent sneaking and watching enemy patterns. Its good, but i still want the option to be able to run and gun every now and then. I think im in the 4th or 5th chapter, and have barely found 30 bullets. Melee damage ability does absolute garbage, even after upgrades. Graphics are grainy starting out, but you can adjust the grain in the options menu. The controls are a little wonkey and the camera can be a punk at times. It kinda reminds me of the "tank" controls back in the RE1 and RE2 days.

Overall this is a good game. The graphics are very good and the story line so far is very cool. It's a little difficult to play when you first get started, there's not a lot of room for errors. There are some basic hints to get you started and then you're pretty much on your own. The game plays out with you as the main character attempts to escape an asylum. It's extremely graphic and I would not recommend this game for anyone under 17. I gave this a 4 out of 5 due to the difficulty of the game, even in the easy mode. Overall, I happen to love these styles of games, so if you love games like Dante's Inferno, this game will be right up your alley.

This game delivers on the most important quality that you (likely) bought it for: it is scary. And not just cheap jump-scare scary... It is legitimately scary for long periods of time.... It's divided pretty equally between a few classic genres of horror-- the creepy, close quarters, psychological horror of an asylum and the open, eery, run-for-your-life of the woods. The controls can be a bit wonky, and the story is hard to follow, but the atmosphere and straight up "WTF was that?!" scary moments make up for it. Great atmosphere, lighting, and execution.

Some of my favorite games are survival horror games such as Silent Hill or Resident Evil 4, and The Evil Within could've been one of the greats if it wasn't for a few minor flaws. The atmosphere is great and it takes you through a bunch of different creepy locations. The story is good enough to keep you interested. The visuals and creative scenes and characters are great. Where the game falls a little short are 2 very important components; graphics and gameplay. The graphics are great, but it is presented in a widescreen format that leaves black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. This wouldn't be that big of a deal if it wasn't combined with a frequently poor framerate. Also, the controls can feel sluggish at times and I found myself unable to pick up items easily. I would still recommend this to a fan of horror games, but I wouldn't list it as a "must play" for everyone.

This game is reminiscent of Resident Evil 4, but is not just a copy-cat version of it. The story is engaging, the graphics are amazing, and the tension is appropriately high. I will say that it's possible to get stuck in places, dying many, many times, but the payoff is worth it. Very gory, so not for the kiddos, but worth playing if you like a good, solid survival horror game.

Gameplay and story were great throughout, but it seems to have ended abruptly and with less difficulty than previous boss battles. Definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat, especially at the beginning.

Overall, The Evil Within is a solid return to form for the survival-horror genre. Fans of classic horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill will rejoice. The game offers many gut wrenching moments and plenty of scares, along with pretty visuals, a gloomy atmosphere, unique and terrifying enemies and a genuinely fun experience. Unfortunately, it has a few flaws, such as some cheap enemies, wonky combat, a few technical issues and bland characters. Flashes of Resident Evil 4 brilliance is here, which is a huge compliment. Through the distracting annoyances, you’ll still want to keep playing, because the fun factor is there. That says a lot about The Evil Within.

I absolutely loved this game. Very reminiscent of the older Resident Evil games, which is a great thing. The atmosphere of this game is amazing, gameplay fairly seemless, and story is really good with just a few holes (which may get covered in the DLC). If you are into survival horror, this is your game.

The Evil Within was one game that I've been anticipating for a long time ever since it was announced last year. The Evil Within is a Survival Horror game directed and created by the godfather of the Survival Horror genre Shinji Mikami, who was the creator of Resident Evil. Shinki Mikami is back to direct a game that delivers pure Survival Horror in the hopes of reviving the genre. Let's first talk about what the game is about, the story goes something like this: Detective Sebastian Castellanos witnesses the slaughter of a few fellow officers and gets ambushed and knocked unconscious. After he awakens, he finds himself in a deranged world where hideous creatures wander among the dead. Facing unimaginable terror, and fighting for survival, Sebastian embarks on a horrifying journey to unravel what's behind this evil force. The story is interesting but it does suffer from a few questionable scenes that makes it a little confusing but nevertheless it's still fascinating. On to visuals, the graphics are gorgeous but there will be a couple instances of texture pop-in but it doesn't show up particularly often. On to game play, you play as Sebastian where you will be using a variety of weapons to defend yourself from enemies as well as perform certain tasks like sneak kills and running from enemies when protection is not available. When it comes to weapons, you start off with a revolver but you get more weapons like a shotgun, sniper rifle, and a couple others but your most versatile weapon is the Agony Crossbow, a crossbow that can be used to shoot a variety of different arrows that can be crafted from mechanical parts collected from disassembling traps and killing enemies, this weapon is very helpful when you have little to no ammunition for your other guns. You can also upgrade your skills like longer running and increasing maximum health, weapons and ammo capacities with green gel, which can be collected from killing enemies, boss battles and looking around for resources. The Evil Within was a fantastic and satisfying horror game that kept me on the edge of my seat when playing and got me freaking out when deadly enemies are coming after me. If you like horror games, The Evil Within is simply not to be missed, it's available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. There is still a chance to get a copy with the Fighting Chance Pack which consists of a Medical Kit, Double Barrel Shotgun, Incendiary Agony Bolt, Poison Agony Bolt, and some Green Gel to start upgrading.

    A survival horror throwback

I also love survival horror. This game, which is Shinji Mikami masterpiece, shines in all areas to me. While the framerate is 30 FPS and the game is presented in letterbox format (which could put off some), I believe it was created this way to reflect a horror film feel to it. I get that rustic original Resident Evil vibe while still getting the gameplay of Resident Evil 4, which is Mikami's defining game in my opinion. Mikami is the father to the Resident Evil series and also served as a producer on other hits such as the Devil May Cry series and Viewtiful Joe series. This guy knows how to make/produce great games. Getting back to The Evil Within, the gameplay again has that old school survival horror vibe to it. You will die multiple times. However, the locations that this game takes you through in it's 20+ hour campaign is ripped straight from the best horror flicks. From mental hospitals, wooded forests with dilapidated cabins in the still of the night, to haunted mansions; it's all here. If you love horror flicks and have been waiting on a game to love, buy this. Another throwback is how the game is divided into Chapters, 15 actually, which reminds me of games from yesteryear although being on next gen systems. I have read reviews that speak on the graphics and texture pop ins. I am playing on the PS4 and have not noticed any pop in. Maybe I am just lucky. And yes, I am that person who stands on the edge of the pier in Chapter 2, marveling at the water effects and lighting of the moon reflecting from the lake while viewing the dark abandoned lighthouse across the sprawl. I love graphics and I take my time in games to enjoy what the developer worked hard to achieve. To me personally, they nailed it with The Evil Within. So while it may take me 30+ hours to beat the game because I tend to stand around and spin the camera to enjoy the views, it may only take the average person 20+ hours as stated above. Next up, the monsters. Again, this game doesn't disappoint. It is clear that Silent Hill characters influenced some of the monstrosities in The Evil Within. Although, I would be remissed if I didn't say that Resident Evil shows up with the character design as well. You have your butcher that is listening to classical music as he is butchering up a human body right in front of you, to the chainsaw wielding maniac that bashes through doors chasing you relentlessly. Again, this game is tough. If you have never played a Survival Horror Game and are new to the genre, I suggest playing on the easiest mode starting out or you may get frustrated. Ammo and Syringes are limited, both needed to stay alive, so don't expect to shoot at everything you see. This game plays great for the stealth gamers out there as well. You need strategy to complete chapters....and patience. The only fault I can say about this game is the story. While it is not really a fault, it can be convuluted and a bit disjointed at times. It isn't that it is bad, it just skips around alot. I would tell you more on that but that would be spoiling the game for you if you intend to buy. All in all, The Evil Within is exactly what I have been needing for my Survival Horror fix. It has all the elements. Locales, Monsters, Graphics, Tension, Great Pacing and Gore. While the story is a bit all over (until you get it), it is not enough to bring this game down a notch. Great timing for the release as well, as it is the perfect time of year for this game's atmosphere.

I was looking for a game that was a similar style to the last of us so I decided to try out the evil within, some of the game play is similar like sneak attacks on zombie like creatures, avoiding and dismantling traps, etc but it's also a lot more hardcore horror than the last of us, this is more like a gory horror film. It is pretty easy to get into and it keeps you on your toes with monsters constantly coming after you

Not as good as resident evil but still fun. The atmosphere was well done, providing some tense moments. Some of the kills were gory, which is always a plus for horror fans. Overall game was easy to beat and did not leave me wanting more. I skipped the DLC. I recommend if you have nothing else to play and can get it cheap.

If you loved Resident Evil 1 and 2 or Silent Hill 1,2, or 3, then you will really enjoy this game. It is a blend of resident evil combat and silent hill atmosphere. Ammo is at a premium and you have to make decisions when it is best to use ammo or run. Patience is key and you have to accept that you will die....ALOT. The game is gory and is not for the faint of heart. But I wouldn't say the game is scary per se (no real jump thrills like the dog in the window in resident evil), but the environment / atmosphere is very dreary, foreboding, and creepy. It has been a long time since a game like this has been released and if you want some old-school survival horror, look no further!

The game was one of my most anticipated of 2014. However, frame rate issues and the forced letterbox aspect ratio prevent it from being #1 this year to me. The game is incredibly difficult, sometimes unfairly. It is what you would expect in terms of gameplay if you played Resident Evil 4. The game has a great atmosphere and enemy design. But one huge issue is how I cannot swap the camera to look either over my left or right shoulder. It moves on it's own when you are peeking around a corner.

Fans of the resident Evil Series should defiantly check out this game. As the story is on the Cheese side of the spectrum the gameplay looks and feels like a Resident Evil game. I haven't played thought a Resident Evil game since Code Veronica was released on the Dreamcast but I do like what I've played so far in the Evil Within. While it's not the greatest horror game out there it is a good game and interesting enough to keep you playing. While the game can be pretty hard and frustrating not in a throw your controller sense but it does an ok job at creating a sense of panic when being chased down. While ammo is scares and limited to upgrades it's all about survival here and conserving the limited ammo that you can hold at one time till you upgrade further. Also running is a bit of a joke, for a cop who must smoke a couple of pack a day you sure can't run very far without completely stopping and catching your breath. Most of the puzzles feel dated memory's of the Original Playstation come to mind, again very RE feeling. The camera, while it works I find the camera is set to close to the character and am not a fan as it make you feel Closter phobic in tight spaces. Also even when outdoors you feel limited to your surroundings. Lastly is graphics lots of pop up and the game from the loading screen can be slow to draw in the details. While the game has some fairly nice graphics some spots are just hideously drenched with poor textures. Overall I would give this game a 6.8 out of 10 and put it in the Good game category. It's not for everyone, but is enjoyable enough to play through till the end.
