Thank you for the review, bugman, and sorry to hear that you're having a problem with your Canvio Connect II drive.

I wonder what type of problem you're experiencing with the drive and what troubleshooting steps you've tried so far. For now I recommend reviewing the Toshiba Forums community knowledge base article at forums.toshiba.com/t5/Computer-Troubleshooting/How-To-Fix-USB-Problems-in-Windows-10-Windows-8-Windows-7-and/ta-p/283727 for detailed step-by-step instructions on how to troubleshoot USB device problems.

If that info doesn't lead to a resolution and the drive proves to be defective you can initiate Toshiba's warranty replacement process at acclaim.toshiba.com anytime during the drive's warranty period.

Thanks again for the feedback and for choosing Toshiba. Toshiba

I love this small but useful thing. Plus the 3.0 USB speed - cannot go wrong with! I mainly use this drive to back stuff from mac/pc for random data. I have noticed once you used it with your computer's USB 3.0 - the I/O speed is awesome. I loved the sale price it was on and really happy i bought it.

    Seems to have some limitations

It doesn't work for what I want to do with it. It might work fine for most people. I want to use Windows Backup to backup my whole hard drive, using USB 2. That doesn't work if the total is hundreds of gigabytes. I think it might have something to do with the power management built in to the drive, but I'm not sure. What might be happening is that the backup via USB 2 is so slow that the drive might think it's idle, and automatically power down in the middle. And I get an "access denied" error message at that point, with the backup incomplete. But I'm just guessing that it has something to do with power management. In any case, I'm giving it one star because it doesn't work for me. If it works for most people, the average number of stars will be high. My 1 star is just from my point of view, from my personal experience with the drive, knowing the problem might only affect me. Keep in mind that I'm only guessing what the problem might be. It might be something entirely different. It took so long that I couldn't watch it happen. Only when I came back and found the error message.

Thank you for the review, Disappointed, and sorry to hear that you've apparently experienced some sort of unwanted power conservation feature while using your Canvio Connect II drive on USB 2.0 ports.

You don't mention which version of Windows you're using but it's possible that Windows itself (not power management within the drive) is turning off or powering down components improperly to conserve power. Take a look at the Microsoft blog entry at blogs.msdn.com/b/usbcoreblog/archive/2013/11/01/help-after-installing-windows-8-1-my-usb-drive-disappears-or-file-transfers-stop-unexpectedly-r-a-post-title.aspx for details on how to resolve a known root cause of that symptom.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the trouble. Toshiba

Tried it on two computers (my laptop and my desktop), and the drivers wouldn't install on either of them. Did a little more research and found that this is a common problem with this particular external drive.

Thank you for the review, Chas, and sorry to hear that you had ran into a problem with software included with your Canvio Connect drive.

I wonder which of the bundled titles you had trouble with and what operating system and version you're using. The "Product Features" list at http://us.toshiba.com/accessories/portable/3tb/connect-ii/HDTC830XK3C1 indicates which software can be used with Mac OS and which requires Windows.

If the drive proves to be defective, you can initiate the warranty process at acclaim.toshiba.com.

Thanks for the feedback and sorry for the trouble. Toshiba
