Freeze, and Restart When Changing Inputs

I researched for weeks, and settled on this TV. It was between this model, the Sony X900F, or the TCL 6 series. I avoided the TCL as I read way too many reviews, and blogs concerning the panel lottery, and wanted to avoid having to return/exchange a TV. I decided on the Vizio over the Sony as the Vizio went on sale, and according to rtings.com the Sony was only slightly better picture wise. Bang for buck the Vizio was the better choice. I was reluctant to purchase the Vizio as I have been reading more, and more reviews of the TV freezing, and restarting when changing inputs. This issue has been written about, and going on for months, and I was hoping they had the issue fixed by now whether it is a hardware, or software issue. Again I decided against the TCL as I didn't want to have to return the TV. It appears I may have to do that anyways. I have apparently received a TV that has this input changing issue. The TV freezes, and takes anywhere from a minute to three minutes to restart before I can do anything with the TV. I have been reading that if I disable the CEC option in the settings this would remedy the issue, but one of the reasons I was upgrading my TV was to use the CEC option. I have tried multiple HDMI ports, I've updated the firmware, and I've factory reset the TV twice to see if the issue would resolve itself. Unfortunately this is not the case, and I'm riddled with the TV freezing/restarting several times a day; this is unacceptable from a brand new TV that costs $700+. The picture is great when viewing HDR/4k content...especially Dolby Vision! 720p, and 1080p is average if not flat looking no matter what settings I've tried. The picture is one thing, but I should be able to use the settings, and options the TV has without the TV freezing, and restarting several times a day. I can't believe out of the 120 reviews I've read on here no one has mentioned this input issue. I've seen some reviewers on reddit and AVS Forum returning their Vizio TV 2 or 3 times and having the same issue with the new ones before giving up and going with another brand. What a hassle to have to unmount, box up, and return a large 55 inch TV several times. Other reviewers mentioned the OS being clunky, or slow, but I think it's passable. I have a Samsung, and an LG which are both smart TVs with different operating systems, and I don't prefer one OS over the other; I just want them to work, and they all do. I've had this TV a week, and will decide before the return window closes whether, or not I will be returning this for the Sony. So far I'm a bit disappointed with this TV....I had high hopes, but not being able to use an option the TV offers is less than desirable.

Today, I'm returning my third Vizio tv

    Posted

I've now gone through three of these tv's. The first one came out of the box with the screen cracked. The second one, when playing games via hdmi 2.2 to my pc, generated a faint vertical line artifact down the middle of the screen, making viewing soul-crushingly annoying. The screen did this on my other computer AND an Xbox one, thus I can conclude that it is a defect within the set, or the way the tv compiles high refresh rate content is broken. The third one, also maintained the vertical line artifacting when playing games from any input source. It is literally the exact size, shape and color artifact as the last Vizio. No combination of tv settings could resolve this issue. Turning the brightness setting to 100 did eliminate the band, but that is not a solution, It's like staring into the sun on this tv. Different cables, input ports, nothing worked. Is it possible that I'm this unlucky?? No other tv in the house does that when hooked up to any of the above sources. No more VIzio. LG, Sony, Samsung, anything other than VIzio. The customer service guys at my Best Buy probably think I'm absolutely insane, rambling about a faint vertical line on the 3 brand new tv's I've brought back. Embarrassing. The ONLY reason why I gave it 2 stars was due to the picture quality when viewing online videos and 4k movies. It is very clear, with excellent color and lighting dynamics. I have no idea what its problem with gaming content is. I bought a 120hz monitor to utilize that speed, not watch movies @ 24hz with fake "true motion". I'll post a picture I took with my phone, displaying what I'm talking about. Screen-capping with the windows key and prnt-scn key reveals that the source does NOT have verticle distortion. The game is Senua's Sacrifice for anyone wondering.

    Good picture but with issues

I purchased this tv as our first venture into a 4K tv. I have a Panasonic plasma that I am having a hard time parting with as my main tv so picked this up to have the 4K experience and to hook up an Xbox one X to. Purchased during holidays so $150 off was a great price. The picture quality is very good in 4K and the black levels are pretty good for an lcd. Gaming looked great on it and 4K Netflix was awesome. Cable tv looked pretty bad. I was not impressed with the smart system as other people have mentioned. It is very slow and takes loading anything on Netflix much longer than my Nvidia Shield. I was willing to live with that at this price point. I had the same experience as another reviewer mentioned. A few days after purchase, there was a thin horizontal line that almost looked like static or tv snow flash across the screen. It would happen at startup and eventually go away after watching tv. I eventually swapped it out for another unit and did not have that issue. I had the second unit for a few weeks without any issues. On the last day of my return period those static lines started appearing again while playing Xbox. I tried different content and different hdmi’s and they would pop up randomly. It was very frustrating after wall mounting the tv to drag it back to Best Buy on the last day of my return period two hours from store closing. I’m just grateful it happened within the return period and not after. I am now looking at other tv’s and I will probably purchase a Samsung q8fn after research. It’s about double the price but if I’m spending my hard earned money I want a quality product. You get what you pay for. I would try oled but worried about burn in due to using it for gaming. Never buying Vizio again. Heard good things about them but bad experience for me. Didn’t want to try another of the same model and have to drag it back to Best Buy again.

Not a smart TV, a smart phone display more like it

I went out and bought this TV after doing my homework. I got it home it looks beautiful , and from there the problems show up left and right. This is not a smart TV, this is a TV with 10 apps installed and you are limited to that on screen. Every other app has to be installed to a smart phone. There is no ability to filter a search for vizio smart cast apps. unLike other TV brands you can search install and uninstall needed and unneeded apps. If you like to browse apps and shows this TV is not for you. You have to know what you want to watch to determine what you have to down load to you own personal phone. For instance Youtube does not work on the TV only on your phone. No amazon music, or photos, no weather apps, no games. There si no list of apps that are smart cast and no ability to filter free or paid for apps. Pluto the Free streaming tv app installed works great except for not being able to select a channel by the channels number. so if you are on channel 936 adn want to go back to channel 12 you have to scroll through 100 channels to get back, no last fiction or recently viewed Chanel function. No recently viewed app function also. So if you watch AMC regularly you have to open the app on your phone and select the content on your phone first before you can display it on the TV. Horrible. Horizontal line appear within a few hours of use an are not visually pleasing, in fact i thought something might be wrong with the panel. the loading screen has obvious bloom. My Amazon Fire stick which was $39 is faster to load and has better picture quality on the apps screen. The $39 fire stick is far more versatile and snappy than a my new $900 TV. I will be returning ASAP in the morning for a full refund. If you don't mind having your face in your phone while watching TV this is for you. No Bluetooth as a secondary concern for a TV of this price should have such a basic function. The front panel of the TV is wavy and not flat very noticeable from the side with a reflection just all around unhappy with OS and usability of the TV. The Picture however is great best in class, same with the design. The OS is years behind any other TV band.

Hi Paulie. Thank you for your feedback. The TV actually has 2 different ways of accessing apps. The first way is with traditional built-in applications like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu. We’re frequently updating the unit with new apps. Most recently we’ve added NBC & Youtube (which were added to this model through an automatic firmware update). This model also comes with built-in chromecast technology that allows you to cast content from thousands of application on your iOS or Android devices. For a list of all cast capable applications please visit. https://store.google.com/us/product/chromecast_2015_apps.

We would love the opportunity to work with you to resolve this issue. Our customer support team can be reached at 877-878-4946. VIZIO

    Mediocre in many ways

I was surprised at how poorly this TV performed despite having such high ratings from some of the "objective" TV review websites. A few things worth pointing out: - The TV had trouble syncing with our Samsung sound bar plugged into the digital optical output. Sometimes the TV would not power on the sound bar; other times the sound would be several seconds out of sync with the TV. We had no performance issues with the Samsung sound bar on our previous TV and other sets we've used it on, so I chalk this up to a connectivity issue with the Vizio. - The picture had a good deal of vignetting and was very choppy on content below 1080p. It did not do a good job of upscaling at all. - The SmartCast software was painfully slow. For a "premium" smart TV the software felt very dated and included a lot of bloatware. Notably absent was DIRECTV Now, which requires the use of the built-in Chromecast -- very inconvenient if DIRECTV Now is your main TV source. - Google Home integration was essentially useless. The only useful feature we found on it was powering off the TV (it will not, however, power the TV on). - When compared to comparable TVs from other manufacturers, the lack of energy efficiency quickly became a red flag. This TV uses even more power than the plasma TV we were replacing, which is pretty remarkable given the fact that plasmas were known to be energy hogs. We returned this TV due to the sound sync issues and purchased a Samsung instead (at a lower price). So far have been very happy.

Hello theoriginalwm, to address a few of you questions there are answers below. A few things that might help you get the kind of picture quality you are looking for. First, make sure the Display is getting a hi-definition or 4K signal. This means making sure that you're source device (like a cable/satellite box) is capable of HD or 4K, and that it's connected to your Display with an HDMI cable that can deliver the HD or 4K picture. You can also change between pre-set picture modes on the display by pressing the PIC button on your remote. This will toggle between a few picture setting that look good in different situations. If your display is in a bright room try Vivid or Calibrated. If it’s in a dimmer room try Calibrated Dark.

The SmartCast input does have limited applications installed and you cannot add extra apps to the input. We are continuously evaluating new applications for possible addition to this screen. In the meantime you can cast any of the thousands of Chromecast enabled applications to the TV from any mobile device on your network.

We have recently added more Google Home intergration for powering on and off the television. VIZIO

So I had gone through about 6 different TVs before buying this one and it better than the Sony, Samsung and LG lcd led tvs I brought home and did not like. So to be fair all of the TVs I tried all did something better than then the other, but they all had there issues that I could not live with being very ocd and picky. So with that said I will say the Vizio had the best black levels out of the Sony, LG and Samsung, the Samsung had better color but was not worth $1800 since this tv was just as good in every other aspect for only $900. So overall this tv is awesome! If you get a good one, after a long weekend of watching movies and playing games I was happy that I found a tv I could be happy with but I was unfortunately disappointed when I started having backlight flickering and dimming issues and a cluster of dead pixels in the center of the screen. At this point I had been back and forth to Best Buy trying all these different TVs that I wasn’t happy with I was over it and I shelled out the extra money and got an LG OLED and I couldn’t be happier I did, I should have gone OLED in the first place. That’s just my experience so if anyone does decide to buy this tv I wish you luck and hope you don’t run into any issues bc if you don’t you will have a great looking 4K HDR TV

When CEC is on, TV crashes/freezes changing inputs

i was so excited to buy this tv, in the first couple months, everything was fine, and than i think after a firmware update, the tv now crashes when trying to change inputs on its own, when i turn on my ps4 or apple tv. It will attempt to change inputs, but then freezes for over 3 minutes and restarts itself. it sucks because other than this issue, the TV is great, picture is fantastic. Just the UI is garabge It's ridiculous that vizio refuses to acknowledge this as a known issue considering there are so many ppl experiencing this expressed online on reddit. There are enough of us disgruntled customers talking to each other, we have the basis for a lawsuit against vizio for releasing a malfunctioning product and choosing to ignore it. ive called tech support and they're gonna send a repair guy to change the motherboard or whatever, but other customers had the same service done and still didnt fix the issue. i guess the lesson is...you get what you pay for

Purchased this to save a few bucks and since my previous Samsung bit the dust prematurely. I did extensive research and this TV was in the top 5 so I made the switch from Samsung and regret it nearly every day. The picture is great from straight on but quality dwindles as you move to the side which is not the biggest drawback. The interface is clunky and changing sources is the most infuriating thing in the world. It does not understand differing resolutions of inputs and “thinks” forever. The indicator of the source is confusing, the line underneath the source makes sense until it doesn’t move and other inputs are highlighted with brighter letters. So it’s nearly like playing the lottery to determine which source you get. I am a cable cutter and use an AppleTV, Xbox and antenna. One of the simplest features I could think of with an antenna is a guide, but no, you get no guide whatsoever. I do like that the AppleTV Remote can make the TV turn on and off since most of the time it is the input used and my kids can operate it. Id recommend spending the extra $100 for the equivalent Samsung.

I had very high hopes for this tv. After months of research and comparison I decided on the Vizio over a Samsung. Big mistake. Within two weeks I have had multiple issues with connectivity. Each of the HDMI ports give an intermittent two second black screen....the sound remains but the picture disappears. The picture does return but within an hour or so it happens again....blank screen, flicker of a show, blank screeen, show comes back. I replaced all of my HDMI cables with new 2.0s and it did not help. Vizio support had me reboot everything but to no avail. Not sure what to do at this point since I’m past my rerun period. Here’s hoping that vizio can come up with a workaround.

TCL Panel Lottery all over again

    Posted
    SteelFan88

On my second television. First had three or four noticeable dark zones causing significant uniformity issues. Network adapter which was directly hooked up to my router could not obtain a good enough bandwidth to play 4K HDR content. On my second TV...panel is worse. Horrible noticeable banding, light bleed, and extremely laggy local dimming causing shadows to trail behind moving bright objects. Local dimming feature is essentially unusable on my second set. Probably going to return for the TCL...if I'm going to get banding and Dirty Screen Effect issues, I might as well pay $100 less.

I was looking for another TV for the Bedroom and got this for the price after seeing it in person in the stores. However, when I used it for a week, it was not good. Some 4k content looked crisp and clear, but and different lighting and angles of view, the colors were fady. I got this after owning a LG C7 in my living room, so I obviouisly couldn't go back. What did I do? I exchanged this and paid for another LG Oled C8 lol. Can't go back after you do Oled.

I bought this TV and I returned the first one because the whole screen turned purple in the middle of a movie. I exchanged it for another one and it worked better, but I'm not that impressed. I loved the picture quality when viewing 4k content. But when viewing 1080p and 720p content there was a lot of color banding in dark scenes. This was very obvious and distracting. I returned the TV and went back to my 1080p plasma. I will be looking for another TV

I like stands, maybe the company thought since everyone mounts on the wall it would be mounted on my wall? It is not. I will say it has a certain black that I have only really seen on OLEDs.
