Customers consistently note the deep gameplay, touching story, and immersive world of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, often praising the game's music as well. However, some find the voice acting and battle system to be challenging, while others point to occasional performance and resolution issues, particularly in handheld mode. The map's usability is also a source of some frustration for players.

Great RPG that is half the learning curve of xenoblade chronicles X on the Wii U and is just as big of a journey with lots of characters to befriend and use in battle. If you have played the last two games you'll be familiar with everything it throws at you for the most part with only a couple different changes to the leveling mechanics and combat. The only thing I dislike is they still have some mundane fetch quests that are a pain to get through but you DONT have to do them. That's probably the best part about this game is the ability to not have to worry about grinding unlike previous entries and be able to just play the game organically and still be able to fight what comes at you in the main story missions. You still have to understand the battle system but you don't have to over level just to win.
They did add that whenever you complete side missions that the only way to add the exp from said missions is to sleep at an inn. Almost like FINAL FANTASY 15 except in 15 even defeating monsters in the field doesn't level you, here it does and it's only tied to the side missions. If you're looking for a great RPG pick this up. Worth the asking price!

The graphics are quite good especially if you like the anime style. At first the battle system seems too simple but you quickly learn that it's very complex, more so than it really needs to be. I recommend looking online as the in game tutorials don't explain it very well. It's also very long, at least 60 hours.

This is a hard review for me, and would probably give a 3.5 star. I love the game, but it isn't without its faults. I think a pro and cons list is the best way to break it down.
Pros:
Graphic - Looks stunning in both handheld and on the TV.
Frame Rate
Battle System
Varied side quests
Easy to use menu
Save system - Save anywhere
Varied locals
Large worlds even though the areas are restrictive/enclosed
Controls - just feels right.
Neutral:
Inventory Management
Map Implementation
Story
Controls when diving - quick use of the A,B,X,Y and it lack of response at times. I am putting this under Neutral as this might be me, or input lag with my TV?
Cons:
Pop-in - Can take a little while for the textures to fill in when using docked.
Too much swearing
Too little clothing on the females.
Camera angle in closed spaces and in the the cloud water.
Inconsistent enemy ratings
Direction pointer is all over the place, and side/main quest markers sometimes overlap causing issues.
Mini game to upgrade popie
Tora - Character voice has actually pushed me to play muted much of the time, and can't seem to switch him out.
Not letting you use some battle items until later in the game. Example..combos. Those should be usable up front IMO.
Tutorial - Can be lacking on describing what is going on
The use of high tide/low tide - Based on when you sleep and not time.
Hitting "A" when digging or selecting a treasure seems to require you to select it twice.
This is a very fun game, with a lot of flaws that keep it from greatness. If you are a parent looking for a kid friendly game I would stay away unless you do not care about profanity or scantly clad women. I actually would let my child play Skyrim over this one. Also, it would bump up a 1/2 star if not for Tora. Most annoying voice and dialect of all time in any game.

Ok there are a few frame rate dips, a few pop ins when fast traveling for a few seconds, and the graphics take a dip every now and then to maintain frame rates. Now that the technical stuff is out of the way, let's talk about what really matters. Xenoblade 2 is the deepest JRPG to come out in 2017, it has a very intriguing story, likable characters, a gorgeous world and 10 kingdoms or lands to explore, but best of all, a super deep combat system and customization mechanic that will keep one entertained and busy for a plethora of hours. I have finished the game, the main story but I cant put it down, the end game content is amazing and every day I find a new unexplored area, more cutscenes to watch, and new gear to equip and acquire, as well as new super bosses. This game is so much fun for RPG players, and it will go down as one of the best, if not the best JRPG I've ever played.

This game is breathtakingly remarkable. I am over 80 hours in and finished the game with lots of stuff to do to fully achieve 100%. I have finished xeno 1 and X and loved both but this game has the best bits of both and masters over them in story and complexity. The story with no spoilers absolutely pulls on your heart strings and I have never experienced such an emotional roller coaster in my 40+ years of gaming. Monolith Soft I hope you are reading this as I have all gaming platforms, pc, ps4, xbox x and switch. This game has truly conquered them all with absolutely without trying. Haha I just hope I don't pass away before you release the next xenoblade :). The game does have some graphical glitches when played hand held to dock as resolution often stays grainy. Just restart game in docked mode sorts this out. The mini map needs some work and travelling. Although developers will patch soon.
Battle system - complex but superb
Story - amazing
Graphics - Good but not perfect - this is expected with Nintendo. Although games make consoles not graphics.
replayability - excellent
Music - breathtaking
Looking forward to expansion next year and hoping it carries on from end game and not a different era.

The most confusing combat system I have ever seen

The game itself is not bad. The design of the landscape and art are very good. And I'm pretty sure if you can get deep into the game, the gameplay can be quite solid too. But the problems of the game are also obvious. It's definitely not a game for everyone.
Pros:
Great visual when docked.
Great art and game world design.
Massive amount of content.
Grabbing story.
Cons:
Blurry visual in handheld mode. When load is high, the pixel count can be very low and the overall image quality is quite bad.
THE most confusing combat system I've ever seen. After reading articles and watching videos that explain the combat system, I'm still totally confused. Some articles even have contradictory explanations, which indicates even hardcore gamers don't necessarily get things correct. The first few hours of the game, I was frequently interrupted by its tutorial. I think I patiently read all the tutorials but I'm still totally in the dark. Definitely one of the worst tutorial systems out there.
Voice acting sometimes can be really awkward. The speech can be repetitive during combat or whenever daytime changes and new place is discovered.

I loved the game in the end. The story was fantastic, though it took a little bit to really pick up, and the battle mechanics were much better once they were fleshed out a ways in. The only reason I can't rate this game any higher is because of terrible choices made by developers; and I mean choices that would make newer players of the series outright quit.
When exploring the large and stunning areas to get to your next location, you'll certainly run into enemies that are far higher than you in level, and I mean between 20-70 levels higher. This makes it very frustrating when you're just trying to progress to the next area, but you get ambushed by a high level enemy, or a group of them, and get one shot, having to start over from the last landmark.
Speaking of one shots, there are too many of them! In battles, mainly with bosses, but many smaller enemies can do it too, you will suddenly find your self from max health, to zero. That's not too bad, but in other instances, your whole party will go from max health to zero health out of nowhere. It is very frustrating especially when you have no control over it. The enemies/bosses that do these moves usually do them when their almost dead, so you know you either have to kill them as fast as possible, or you're dead.
Some final major issues are with navigation. The compass on top is not helpful in the slightest. When you have multiple objectives in the same direction, they will stack on top of each other making it impossible to tell how far away each objective is. The mini map is useless a lot of the time when expanded, it doesn't show much of the area. The only way to see where side quests are and the location of the main mission is to pull up the fast travel menu, scroll through all the areas until you find the one you are in. It's a giant hassle and takes quite a while to look through. Even knowing where you need to go is not enough sometimes. It's very easy to get lost and wander around for hours (I and mean HOURS) trying to find the right path to follow, this game does not have good leading.
Considering all these flaws, it'd be expected for me to give a lower rating, but the actual combat gameplay and the story alone are so well done that it offsets these issues. It really is a must-play in the end. Honestly it'd be worth buying a Switch for.

It's a shame that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (XC2) launched so late in the year, because it would otherwise have likely been a contender for many publications' RPG of the Year awards. It is certainly the most ambitious JRPG I've played in years, managing to integrate the compelling narrative from Xenoblade Chronicles with the strong world-building and scale of Xenoblade Chronicles X. Happily, a player will need no familiarity with those earlier games to enjoy this one, since the story is entirely unique.
With regard to the gameplay, the battle system is the strongest so far in the Xenoblade series, and indeed one of the more engaging JRPG battle systems crafted so far. Watching previews did not do it justice, as I feared it would be cluttered and difficult to follow. While playing, however, mechanics are slowly introduced to the player and quickly become, if not second-nature, easily grasped. The presence of environmental puzzles which require specific characters keeps the party makeup changing and adaptation of the player's strategy.
Finally, there are a handful of small issues. The game's resolution drops significantly in handheld mode, though it's never unclear or hard to see. In fact, a sharpness filter is applied to the visuals which ends up making it look a bit different, which I like but may be disliked by some. Additionally, tutorials cannot be rewatched so players are advised to take screenshots when those tips appear on-screen. Lastly, while the environmental and creature design is uniformly excellent, some of the characters veer in fan-service territory. This is a bit disappointing for a series that has historically offered a more conservative approach to character design, but hardly a big deal - characters are all well-developed, so some elements of the character visual design is the only shortcoming in this regard.
I would strongly recommend this game to anyone looking for a consistently engaging, beautiful world to explore. Similarly, folks looking for a fascinating story packed with compelling characters will be overjoyed to have another massive epic that can be played at home on their television or on the go.

I absolutely love this game! The story gripped me from the start, despite the numerous tutorials. Exploring in this game is fun and rewarding. The titans design are amazing and accompanied by one of the best soundtrack created in a long time. The combat system is very deep and rewarding to masterize. The lurning curve is soft as the game introduces new mechanics at a good rythm. If you are lost, you can buy cheap tutorials so you are never really lost. Some negative points include some slow down in some crowded areas and some textures that takes time to load. However, this did not hamper my enjoyment of the game. The story is quite long and will stay with me as one of the best RPG experience this year. If you like JRPG in general, you will not be disapointed by it!!

First off, I'd give this game a 3.5 if I could, but I rounded up. It's a fun game overall. Battles start out somewhat breezy but eventually become 5 minute slogs, though fortunately the battle system remains fun since it is so rhythmic. Hopefully a patch comes through to better balance enemy HP, because you will find that it makes more sense to avoid battles and do quests instead, and no game should be balanced to avoid playing it. The environments continue to show that Monolith are masters of environment design and are a joy to explore...or would be with an industry-standard map system. This game astounds in how many ways it is both well-designed and more archaic than a first-generation PS2 game.
Now for the worst parts of the game. The story might as well be "Generic Anime: The Game". There is nothing that you haven't seen before in this game. The writing is amateur and the story hits every cliche that every mid-tier anime series has hit for at least 4 decades. The voice acting is very spotty as well, though not as bad as the internet has made it seem. Then there's...the women. If you're a young boy or teenager, well, you'll have some material to keep you occupied in your room for a while. But otherwise if you're too old for this stuff, it's just embarrassing and is the most obvious pandering I have seen in a good while. Before someone gets mad though, I'm not going to let this affect my rating, as the game has enough technical problems as it is.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is certainly not a worthy successor to its forebear, but somehow it has maintained my interest more easily, so I have to give it credit for that. It's worthwhile as a game, but for anyone looking for anything more than a time-waster until much better games come out next year, I suggest you look elsewhere.

What some might love... and what some games today are missing. The gameplay is not something you master in 1 or 2 hours. Yes, there are auto attacks.. but the gameplay goes beyond that. There are hour long tutorials on youtube breaking down the gameplay... this is not zelda or skyrim.
The characters.... I can remember watching the trailer wondering "why did they change the art style." I still prefer the Wii U versions art. However the characters are actually very well done... that you probably won't mind as much.
The voice acting can be some what annoying... of course that is all subjective. Not everyone is going to feel the same about that. I also find the background music (sometimes) a little annoying. Luckily you can turn it down.
Good characters, Big open world, Solid but different gameplay
This game is not for everyone... and that's not a bad thing. Some people might be put off by auto attacks... but if you dig deep enough... you will realize there's more depth to the gameplay than pressing a button.

I have played the last two Xenoblades (Chronicles 1 and X) and this one took the series to another level.
The positives:
- Beautiful maps
- Deep gameplay
- Story is superb
- Unique enemies
- It’s portable!
The negative:
- English voices are terrible.
- Slight slowdown when many enemies on screen
Overall, if you want a deep customization battle system with a great story, this is the game for you. This game will be worth the money since the replayability is extensive if you want to eventually conquer the high level enemies.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a great single player RPG. The story is solid but where the game really shines is in its gameplay. The combat system is complex yet intuitive and rewarding to learn. The blades system is reminiscent of games like Pokemon in that you raise each of them individually and form parties of them to tackle content. The story is solid (and may be extra interesting if you've played XC1) and the characters are likable. The game has basically everything you'd want from your typical RPG and yet somehow avoids being too grind-intensive.
That being said, the game does lack some extra QoL features to further expedite your gameplay. Various character dialogue and cutscenes are pretty abundant and can get quite tedious after awhile. Additionally, the game looks flat out bad in handheld mode. Not nearly to the point of being unplayable but enough to make you think that it looks bad (especially if you're used to Zelda/Mario graphics).
Luckily Monolith has begun addressing these issues with their updates and are slated to continue supporting the game for at least another year, so these issues may be resolved over time.

Overall, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a fantastic game. The world is incredibly interesting with all the land mass being on the backs of giant creatures called titans. The game does not have a whoel lot to do with previous Xenoblade games, but there are some shared elements. It is closer to the first Xenoblade Chronicles rather than Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Combat is fun, but the chatter between the characters during battles can become quite annoying. Character abilities can be customized, but there aren't any options for appearance customization if that is something you are in to.
Music is pretty good overall. Some tracks are amazing and some are just OK, but it all fits well with the world.
If you are in to JRPGs, this is a must buy.
