A: yes it can, i would recommend mounting it on a 2.5 to whatever size bay you are placing it in, but as long as your desktop support SATA drives these will work just fine

A: I installed a SSD and extra memory in a MacBook Pro 15 inch early 2011 with Mavericks on it and then upgraded to Yosemite with no issues. This particular SSD I put in a Mac Pro with no issues. running Yosemite.
