  • Key Specs
    • Storage Capacity: 1000 gigabytes (Measured in megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB) and terabytes (TB), this is the amount available for storing files, music, movies, photos and more. The total includes the capacity of the hard disk drive and solid state drive if both are included on the computer.)
    • Storage Drive Type: SSD (Traditional, mechanical hard disk drives are the most common type of storage because they're relatively inexpensive and offer huge capacities. However, they also generate both noise and heat. Solid state drives, also known as SSDs, are many times faster than hard disk drives and have no moving parts to wear out, but typically offer less capacity for the same price.)
    • Maximum Read Speed: 560 megabytes per second (The greatest speed at which the device can read information; for example, opening files.)
    • Maximum Write Speed: 530 megabytes per second (The greatest speed at which the device can write information; for example, saving files.)
    • Interface(s): SATA (Refers to the types of connections that devices use to interact and communicate with each other.)

Q: Is this compatible with my Macbook Pro (13 inch, Mid 2012), 2.5 GHz intel Core i5, MHz DDR3, SATA Disk 500GB computer?

A: Yes it is. You will need to stick with standard SATA III interface 2.5-inch internal drives for your MBP model. If you will install it yourself there are good kits with all the tools you’ll need from OWC, iFixIt and others (Apple uses special screws, requires careful disconnection of cables, etc and a kit is a must as you won’t get by with your standard screw heads). Make sure you work properly with ESD protections when going the DIY route for installation. I had an older 15-inch Mid-2012 (non-retina) MBP that I upgraded with a SATA III Samsung 860 EVO 2TB at the same time I replaced its battery so I could hand it down to a member of my family that started college. Considering the performance you’ll experience when installed, the “PRO” stamp might be a bit meaningless. Specs are selling points - what they provide are performance numbers based on what the SATA III interface is capable of and not what you’ll actually experience when the drive is installed and you’re using it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great fast and reliable class of Samsung SSD drives and is absolutely a solid upgrade from HDD, hybrid SSD/HDD (Fusión in the Apple language), and the OEM SSD Apple provides for your model of MBP. You can get more bang for the buck with a higher capacity regular EVO flavor of the drive. If warranty is a concern, bolt on the Geek Squad protection with a higher capacity EVO. The few times I’ve had to use Geek Squad to replace things, I was able to go to the store, get the replacement, keep the warranty going and did not have to deal with the manufacturer’s RMA processes.

Q: Can this SSD drive be used inside a Mac Pro 3,1?

A: installed it with no problem. First I did a fresh Time Machine backup. I also formatted the ssd to mac os extended(journaled ) prior to switching out the drives in the MacBook Pro 2011. No wiring added, it just plugged in like on the old drive. Option, command,R at boot up. Then installed from time machine. Took about two hours to transfer all the files. Great speed difference . https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/470873/Will+the+Samsung+EVO+860+SATA+III+SSD+drive+work+in+my+system
