This is somewhat of a niche product. You have to want 360 video or photos. People with Samsung S8 through maybe S6 love it, other phones or the Apple ecosytem may be problematic. A plus for Gear VR owners. A good PC for editing also needed. If you study this in advance and it sounds good despite documented limitations, it's hard to beat at this price point. Go in with your eyes open and I think you'll love it. Cons: 1. Mine has overheated twice, both times in 90+ degree weather after about an hour of recording. I recommend not watching your video record on the phone via Bluetooth to possibly keep the cam cooler. With the phone not connected, I'd be comfortable with getting an hour or more of continuous recording over 90 degrees in the sun. Can work around this. 2. The two large curved lens protector surfaces are potentially very vulnerable to scratches and chips. These should be an easily replaced cheap part in my opinion. Multiple people report damaging them in reviews of this and the prior model. Be extra careful with these! Pros: 1. For the money and within the Samsung ecosystem, this is a LOT of functionality. Cheaper than any other camcorder or camera I've ever bought. It has specific technical limits since its main function is 360 recording: no optical zoom, 4K video means 4K for all 360 degrees so it's more like HD for any given half-circle you're looking at, etc. 2. Some people suggest that the small screens like phones are where the video and pictures will look their best and most detailed. Probably true. But a little fuzziness on large screens or on the Gear VR is OK with me at this price and while I'm experimenting with 360 for the first time. 3. Transfer a recording from cam to phone and stitching occurs in the process. You can then upload straight to YouTube or move the files to your PC for further editing. 4. Corel's latest VideoStudio (X10) adds an interesting twist. You can play back your 360 video and move the viewing point around while doing so. This lets you emphasize the parts of the 360 view that tell the story you want as opposed to just using the whole 360 view as filmed. Once you define what the user will see, you convert the film to a flat HD video. Example: put cam on the sideline of a soccer game. It catches the whole game by definition in wide-angle. Edit it and follow the ball as appropriate to tell the story you want to tell. Then convert this to a flat film. It looks like someone was physically on the sideline during the game moving the cam around with the action. You lose the 180 degrees behind you but that doesn't really matter in this context. Of course, what I'd most like to do is plop the cam on a tripod in the middle of the field and keep it in 360 for playback!

I was hoping this camera would be a great entry point for shooting 360 degree video. I was hoping this camera would eliminate the need for multiple camera mounts and stitching. It hasn't lived up to my expectations. One of the first problems I had was this camera has an overheating issue. Under certain conditions the clips shut off after about 5 to 10 minutes. I was experiencing the problem using a dashboard gimbal in my car. I could barely get a 5 minute clip recorded without a 10 minute cool down period in between. Mind you the sun was out, and the dash was a little warm. But the windows were open, and there was good air flow. The second big problem I have with this camera is that I don't have a compatible Samsung phone. The phone control works ok on iOS, but to use the clips from the camera you have to import them to your computer and stitch the file. I was hoping the camera would record and stitch the clips automatically. The import and stitch process isn't a great experience with the PC software. First you have to copy the files from the camera to the PC. The you open the software and add the videos to your project. At this point the software begins to stitch you clips, but you can't use them until the process is complete. You'll see a progress bar on each of the clips. It stitches one at a time, and it takes a long time. I waited around 45 minutes for about 20 minutes of video. I still haven't explored the other features of the software. I've gotten a bit frustrated with the camera at this point. I could probably work with the limitations of the computer software taking forever to import a clip. But the overheating issue could become a big problem in areas without ventilation. It would probably be a good idea to check out some other 360 degree camera to see which ones are more reliable.

From a premier brand like Samsung, I'd hoped for a bit better. My first one was faulty out of the box. It wouldn't turn on with any SD card in it. It would turn on without a card only (which defeats the purpose) and it wouldn't take a system update. I returned to BestBuy and the next one did work fine. The only issue I had is that after 2 ten minute recording sessions back-to-back in the French Quarter of New Orleans it over heated and shut itself off. Otherwise, it's been working. It's pretty picky about memory cards. If you don't have at least a fast class 10, it won't even use the card. I had to buy a new card to keep up with the 4k demand. The picture quality is ok, it is actually 4k. You have to manually change the setting to get 4k, though. The navigation of the system is a bit unusual, but you can get the hang of it with time. It works stand-alone, but can also be controlled through an Android or iOS device. You have to turn the camera into a wifi hotspot for that, and it drains the batteries faster that way. I prefer to use it on its own. The free software is only ok. You can use it to stitch (it takes a very long time) and share online. If you want to edit, you'll need some other software. I'm using Magix Movie Edit Pro 2018. Much better software for editing. Also, the samsung software has crashed my Mac a few times, too. All the cons aside, there is no more affordable way to get 4k 360 video. Keep in mind it is 4k using all 360 deg of video. So each quarter of the video (what you'd see at one time with VR glasses on) is about 1080p. Still pretty good. Long story short, great entry 360 camera if you get lucky enough to avoid one of the many flawed ones people keep getting and use your own editing software.

First of all, the camera only works with CERTAIN high end Samsung phones. But you don't find this out until you download the software and it doesn't find the camera and you go researching that specific problem online. There is no mention of phone compatibility at the store or in the directions. You can download and install the software from Google Play, but it won't work unless your on a specifically compatible phone. Very annoying! Also, the camera will not work without a memory card. At all. No on board memory. I put in a memory card and it saw the memory card. But after having so much trouble getting the camera to connect to my phone, I decided to take it back. I went to take out my memory card and the camera WOULDN'T GIVE IT BACK!. I couldn't get the memory card drawer to slide completely out. I wish I could say something nice about this camera but I simple could not get it to work. Samsung (and Bestbuy) should put more effort in advising their customer exactly what phones the camera works with BEFORE you buy one!

Overall it has been a blast to take and post VR pics and vids on Facebook and YouTube. There are lots of opportunities to use this camera because it is super portable, easy to use, has versatile settings, and a standard tripod port. However, I took what I thought would be some beautiful VR video at the lake behind my house at sunset using the highest resolution the camera offered and there were ducks flying over the water. When I went to watch the video on my Gear 360 headset the resolution was so poor you really couldn't make out the ducks or even details of the trees. I thought it might just be the headset so I uploaded the full video to my laptop and watched on a Mixed Reality using a top of the line graphics card and resolution was still pretty low. That said, if you aren't expecting to get great resolution but some fun 360 videos and pictures (photo resolution was a bit better) then its a good device at the price.

I am a hobbyist photographer so I know the difference between pro gear and consumer gear. This is a nifty piece to add to my camera bag. I love that I can initiate a pic (or video recording) from my cell phone with this on a tripod. I have to play with it a bit more to get myself out of the picture/video when hand-holding, but it is to be expected. I checked in the Best Buy store to make sure the camera and software both worked well with an iPhone (being that this is a Samsung device), and it did. A 360 time-lapse is also a neat feature. I had fun playing with it and I think it would be great for real estate. I can totally imagine an agent giving viewers a lengthy walking tour and allowing people online to browse around. Facebook and YouTube support viewing the 360 photos/video so it makes it easy to share them like you would other content.

The camera can take amazing video. Battery life is short as expected with such a small camera with high demand. My only gripe is that it only takes 3MP stills with a single camera and no optical zoom. Recording long videos is not recommended as even at room temperature I cannot record longer than * mins 25 secs. Even on a cool day at the beach and a hefty SD card installed it will not record any longer. On a breezy car ride it seems to do just fine with recording for longer. It's a good camera for unique video for when you're on vacation or visiting a new city to get a better point of view perspective, but not for everyday use.

unboxing the camera is quite simple and the operating procedures are not that difficult. however, after a few uses, i decided to test a good amount of time recording with the 4k option. i have to sadly report that it crashed after 10 mins and then i turned it back on and it crashed again after 3 min. so i let it cool down and decided to test it again. it failed again within the 15 min mark. i think the message read, "stopped recording due to heating". that's a pretty nasty message. so today i'm exchanging the product because the quality of the video is not bad. so i'm hoping that the next unit will have the updates or quality built in. i'll let you know how it goes.
