What features should I look for in a modem compatible with Verizon Fios?

When choosing a modem for Verizon Fios, look for features such as high-speed data support, compatibility with fiber-optic connections, multiple Ethernet ports, and advanced security options like WPA3 encryption. Some models also offer integrated Wi-Fi 6 for faster wireless speeds and better coverage.

Do I need a router in addition to a modem for Verizon Fios?

Yes, while Verizon Fios uses an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) to deliver internet service, you will typically need a compatible router to distribute the connection throughout your home. Some devices combine modem and router functions, but many users opt for a separate high-performance router for better Wi-Fi coverage.

Can I use my own modem with Verizon Fios service?

Verizon Fios does not use traditional cable or DSL modems; instead, it relies on an ONT installed by Verizon. However, you can use your own compatible router to manage your network, provided it supports the speeds and features you need.

What is the benefit of using a third-party router with Verizon Fios?

Using a third-party router with Verizon Fios can provide enhanced Wi-Fi performance, more advanced parental controls, customizable network settings, and sometimes better coverage compared to standard equipment provided by your ISP.

How do I set up a new router or modem for my Verizon Fios connection?

To set up a new router for Verizon Fios, connect the router’s WAN port to the Ethernet output from your ONT. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to configure your network settings, and ensure your device is set to obtain an IP address automatically. For optimal performance, update your router’s firmware and customize your Wi-Fi network name and password.
