A: Hello Louis! The HDMI will allow you to send the signal from the external devices connected to the soundbar back to the television. If you have all your devices connected directly to your television instead and you are interested in only getting the audio out from your television into the soundbar, it will be required to connect an Optical cord from the digital output of your television back into the TV input on the soundbar. Q: Can you connect this to a Sony e850? The wording shows max 55 inch tv
A: Yes, you can connect it up to the XBR55X850E. I have mine hooked up to the 55" X850D. The max 55" is for what the sound bar can support on top of it. If you have anything larger it will still work. I just wouldn't place the TV on top of the sound bar. Hope this helps.
