Now, this version of the Tarzan story is the bomb! (This means it was awesome.) Instead of telling a story of some white guy lording it over black savages of the jungle, this was done eloquently. The story is about an orphaned white male infant left alone in the jungle, not to be killed, but to be loved and cared for by a female ape. This John/Tarzan (as he was called) does come to realize his inheritance back in civilization, but his heart remained with the wonderful people and animals of the jungle. Not to leave out his wonder wife, Jane, whom he also met in the jungle. John/Tarzan begins his fight against slave traders in the Congo, but he doesn't do it alone. He wages war against the slave traders with the help of ALL his friends, human and animal alike, because he knew he couldn't possibly have accomplished this feat alone. In sum, it's a beautiful story about his love and loyalty to his family and the people (and animals) with whom he grew up. This movie is really heart-warming. However, it's hard to believe that none of it was filmed in Africa.

We were at Best Buy looking for films that we had not seen, and lucked into "The Legend of Tarzan" on sale! Missing this film at our local theatre had been frustrating -- Alexander Skarsgård has been a favorite actor ever since he played Eric Northman on "True Blood", and we are fans of Tarzan films. What is more, the film previews made this version look particularly interesting. Interesting is an understatement! The film has all the romance typical to Tarzan stories with the added reality of Congolese colonial history. For some, learning about some of the European policies in the Congo of the 1800s may not enhance the story, but we are both students of history. Finding out about the real world into which a fictional character would have been born made this a much more amazing film! We both grew up with the more naive Johnny Weissmuller and Gordon Scott films. While we loved those stories, and they ignited our interest in the stories of Edgar Rice Burroughs, this film made the character much more believable! Added to a great film is a collection of wonderful Special Features. They are so amazing that we watched them all, and would watch them again! The Blu-Ray, DVD, UltraViolet Digital HD package gives us the option to watch the film anywhere and everywhere. This film is worth owning!

The picture and sound quality of the Blu-ray was excellent. The movie is very fast paced and entertaining. Tarzan is John Clayton, an English nobleman who has learned to speak English fluently and is civilized. His wife is Jane who is an American. They are living at their estate in England when Tarzan is invited to visit the Congo by the King of Belgium. The invitation is a trap set by Leon Rom to get Tarzan to Africa so Rom can capture him and turn him over to a tribal Chief whose only son had been killed by Tarzan. In return for his capture Rom will be given the Jewels of Opar which will allow the King of Belgium to pay off the debts he owes for trying to colonialize the Congo. Tarzan and Jane are accompanied to Africa by an American Agent played by Samuel L. Jackson. The special effects are fantastic as Tarzan and his friends fight for their freedom from Rom and Belgium.

With a combination of historical fact and the Greystoke legend combined into an exciting and entertaining movie these film makers have created a Tarzan for a new generation. he backstory is told through a series of memories and flashbacks. Tarzan and Jane are a captivating couple with great chemistry. The villains are vile the heroes are capable and conflicted and like any good morality play good triumphs over evil in the end. Well cast, produced and beautifully brought to life this is a Tarzan for the fans of Elmo Lincoln, Johnny Weissmuller, Gordon Scott, Mike Henry, and Ron Ely just to name a few. Do we not remember, Bruce Bennett, Buster Crabbe, Lex Barker, Jock Mahoney and Christopher Lambert. I think the franchise if it becomes one is in good hands and fans old and young can find much to enjoy in this heart of Africa.

Tarzan in 4K was truly a surprise as the story was told so much better than any movie pre dating. You are also treated to the best visuals i have ever seen for this movie, the 4K picture easily surpassing regular blu-ray or dvd, crisp clear jump off the screen where the action starts from the beginning and lasts to the very end. But don't think that's where this review ends, the audio has been beefed up where every quiet sound is easily heard to the loudest rour from the jungle. An amazing movie that holds your attention and is a must have.

Unfortunately, most of us have grown up with the Tarzan movies based on the 30's and 40's Johnny Weissmuller versions of the stories. Unfortunately, if you've read the books, the Tarzan movies from the 30s and 40s in no way presents the character as portrayed in the books, that is, the un-educated but jungle-wise, caring, sensitive brute versus the well-educated and well-spoken British man-of-the-world. While this version of Tarzan was well-done and photographed, well-played and enjoyable (and a great cast), considering the maturity of the character, it seemed that the characters lacked some depth as well as not providing enough to back-up the committed relationship of John Clayon, Viscount Graystoke and Jane.

I have seen countless of Tarzan movies in my lifetime, from Weissmuller, Scott, Ely etc... and as a kid I was always entertained because I never question the impossible or the laws of physics, you are just entertained...so I watched this newest and latest version through a kids eyes...and again I was entertained...so that will be my suggestion... watch it and enjoy....although I think Samuel Jackson is the most ubiquitous actor right now, commercials movies after movies, too much...but I like Alexander and Robbie very fitting. Storyline verges in playing a little bit historical, not a lot just enough to change the usual poachers motivation, which was always present in all Tarzan's movies....

Being a fan of Tarzan (have seen all iterations), I was really waiting for this one. Indeed, the character is closer to the books than what those films of Johnny Weissmuller were but something does not work (in my opinion). I was hoping for a movie more along the lines of Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, which I considered the best so far (my opinion again) except that I wished for the film to have had more action. Well, the current film took care of that, lots of action. Problem is that it gets carried away with now available CG to the point that it becomes frantic and unbelievable. I guess I got my wish; still, it was entertaining and at the price I paid, well worth it.
