    Synopsis

    The Money Pit
Steven Spielberg produced this slapstick comedy of destruction directed by Richard Benjamin. Tom Hanks and Shelley Long star as Walter Fielding and Anna Crowley, an upper middle class New York City couple living in the cramped Manhattan apartment of Anna's ex-husband, Max Beissart (Alexander Godunov). When Max evicts them, the couple purchases a Long Island dream home. But the house proves to be more of a nightmare than a dream, with faucets spewing muck, collapsing staircases, exploding light switches, and crooked repairmen and contractors. As the new home collapses around Walter and Anna, so does their relationship. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

As I'm sure many people have pointed out, this disc is missing a few scenes from the original theatrical release which is incredibly disappointing. The film still holds up pretty well as a solid slapstick comedy and a classic comedic performance by Tom Hanks(it would be great to see him do another silly comedy similar to this, "Bachelor Party" or "The Burbs"). The discs lack of almost any extras and numerous cut scenes is the reason for the low score, the movie itself is a solid 7.5 out of 10 but the disc almost deserves a 0 out of 10. Hopefully Peter Jackson will get with his good friend and "Money Pit" executive producer Steven Spielberg to create a Super Extended Edition that runs three and a half hours and has over 80 bonus features including a DVD commentary with Shelly Long on her day off from waitressing at a Long Island Red Lobster!

People in over their heads isn't funny...in real life. But for some reason, watching everything go wrong for Tom Hanks in this movie is just hilarious. This movie doesn't get talked about nearly enough. And you think it would, seeing as how Tom Hank was one of the biggest stars in the world at one time. His dramas just never set right with me. To me, his comedies are MUCH better. There's enough pain and suffering in real life. I don't want it in my entertainment. Never saw this movie in widescreen before. A LOT of fun.

This is one of my favorite movies and I cannot understand why it was dismissed by critics. A lot of the comedy is slapstick, with collapsing stairs, flying Perdue chickens and "weak" trees. But in the context of rehabilitating the house, they can get away with it. This is a truly funny movie with none of the grossness that usually passes for comedy in Hollywood. And it is a must see for anybody who has ever rennovated a house. We are currently remodeling our home and use terms from the movie all the time from the "Shirk Brothers" to "anybody call a plumber?"

Young lovers Walter (Tom Hanks) and Anna (Shelley Long) are house-sitting the New York City apartment owned by Max (Alexander Godunov), Anna's ex-husband, who suddenly decides to toss them out. Needing a new home, they settle on buying a country estate outside the city, which is available for a suspiciously low price. It soon becomes apparent why, as doors fall off their hinges, staircases come tumbling down and a bathtub falls through the floor. The couple's relationship suffers similarly. Used to own this on VHS and DVD. Worthwhile upgrade!

This is one movie in my book that no other comedy can touch!!!! It is something that I have experienced when trying to do a Hugh project. Every one of my brothers and sisters and also my parents and my children own this movie I had it on DVD and VHS so I got it on Bluray... I absolutely bust a gut laughing, don't know anyone that doesn't love it!

If you're a fan of Big, Bachelor Party, The 'Burbs or Turner and Hooch this is a great Tom Hanks classic. Lots of slapstick, comedy of error and one-liners that make for a fun movie night. Shelley Long is also funny and look out for spots with Joe Mantegna (Criminal Minds) and Alexander Gudonov (Die Hard).

This film was just one of Tom Hanks stepping stones to the top of the movie ladder. He had several very good comedies throughout the 80's, and then in the 90's he catapulted into a whole other galaxy and never looked back. The Money Pit is actually one of his worse movies yet it was still pretty good.

The only memorable thing about this cult favorite is Tom Hanks' wonderful comic turn. The movie around him? Eh. I think people who love it only do because they grew up watching it on HBO. Nostalgia's a powerful thing. The Blu-ray is similarly shrug-worthy.
