    Synopsis

    Westworld
Welcome to Westworld, where nothing can go wrong...go wrong...go wrong....Writer/director Michael Crichton has concocted a futuristic "Disneyland for adults", a remote resort island where, for a hefty fee, one can indulge in one's wildest fantasies. Businessmen James Brolin and Richard Benjamin are just crazy about the old west, thus they head to the section of Westworld populated by robot desperadoes, robot lawmen, robot dance-hall gals, and the like. Benjamin's first inkling that something is amiss occurs when, during a mock showdown with robot gunslinger Yul Brynner, Brolin is shot and killed for real. It seems that the "nerve center" of Westworld has developed several serious technical glitches: the human staff is dead, and the robots are running amok. Suddenly promoted to the film's hero, Benjamin (who seems as surprised and shocked as the audience) must first avoid, then face down the relentless Brynner. Much of Westworld was lensed on the expansive grounds of the old Harold Lloyd estate in Beverly Hills, so it's no surprise that there's something Lloydlike about Dick Benjamin's instinct for self-preservation. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I recently watched WESTWORLD for the first time after buying the Blu-ray version from Best Buy. Michael Crichton's concept of futuristic, high tech theme parks is excellent and is similar to his later JURASSIC PARK. Crichton was the writer/director of WESTWORLD with Yul Brynner starring as the Western gunslinger android based on his character Chris Adams from THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. The biggest negative is that I first watched WESTWORLD in late 2013, Consequently, it appears dated in the writing, special effects, cinemaphotography, etc. compared to today's more sophisticated sci fi plots, digital special effects, etc. At times I felt like I was watching an old made-for-tv movie, The Blu-ray quality is adequate but not outstanding. The special features includes the tv pilot for the short-lived CBS tv series based on the movie---it was so bad, I stopped watching it after a few minutes. The tv series was canceled after only several episodes had aired due to poor ratings. WESTWORLD is an ok movie but it pales in comparison to Crichton's later JURASSIC PARK which beats its predecessor in every aspect.

Before there was a massively popular TV show called Westworld there was the not so popular TV show Beyond Westworld, and before that the movie Futureworld, and before that the movie Westworld that started it all! It's directed by the best selling author Michael Crichton. Like most of his works it has the theme of humans creating life, and that life creating something unexpected and against plan. Chaos Theory. Like Jurassic Park, Westworld takes place at an adult amusement park where you can enjoy realistic lives in Medieval World, Rome World, and Westworld. Life like robots roam the park, and you can essentially do whatever you want, no matter how vile. This thriller is very fun, interesting, and tense as the machines start to become more aware than anticipated. This is what started it all, and it's totally worth the watch.

I watched the HBO series first and thought it was amazing. From there I needed more west world and figured the original movie would be a great companion piece after the series. This is a good movie for sure, and seems to hold up well in my opinion. I can see where they chose actors and performances in the new series that were pulled direct from this movie. My only disappointment was that the movie did not expand the story or give me any other real information or insight beyond what we learned from the new series. I have not read the books and was told that is where you learn everything, so maybe I'll tackle that next. Overall great movie, run time is short for such a big idea, but still well made. I'm surprised there was never a sequel and that it took this long to revisit such a unique idea and concept.

Michael Crichton only directed a few films, but his novels have been made into some great and not-so-great flicks; JURASSIC PARK being one of the former! WESTWORLD (written AND directed by him) prefigures some of the system-breakdown/machines-run-themselves elements that feel like more a part of our lives today than they ever would've been in 1973. Yul Brynner's iconic Wild West death machine is certainly worth the price of admission, as is James Brolin's easygoing pseudo-hero. The disc looks and sounds great & should be on the shelf of every self-respecting sci-fi cineaste.

Yea, well -- what can I say about this movie? A lot of things but basically I'll just say this. This is a movie from the 70s with some tremendous actors, great story and perfect build up toward the end. A sci-fi, action, adventure movie that will make you see how an expensive trip for those who want to vacation can start off as a dream come true to a worst nightmare tho those just looking to have fun in a time where you could be a cowboy, a knight or part of the romantic time before 20th century. The movie was just great beyond words.

Don't get this version of the original Westworld film for the extras--they are sparse, but the original film looks and sounds fantastic on Blu-Ray. If you're a big fan of the HBO Westworld series, you should certainly check out the film on which it's based, written and directed by Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Congo, Sphere, The Andromeda Strain). This story serves as an interesting foundation for what Crichton would do later with Jurassic Park. And nobody can beat Yul Brynner as the Man in Black.

Westworld is an engaging movie about robots/androids based in a park to entertain rich patrons. Of course there will be a problem, but the movie plays out very creatively and the payoff with an actor of Yul Brynner's stature is quite creepy. This movie was made before computer generated effects, yet the effects are quite convincing. I do recommend it.

I was hoping for a better set of supplements for this sci-fi classic, but I guess that we should be thankful that the film even got a wide blu-ray release. What we do get is a short "making of" featurette and the pilot episode for the TV series, Beyond Westworld. Now that this film has been released on blu-ray, I'm hoping that Warner will get around to releasing another Michael Crichton film, Looker, on the format in the near future.
