Great buy
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great choice for college students music and video/ picture buffs alike pros it has a 17.3” screen not touch screen cd/dvd r rw cd r rw formats 3 USB ports 1 hdmi input 1 lan/ Ethernet input cons the hinges are very cheaply made mine is not even a year old and has already had to go into service twice the first time it had no power the power port went out completely the second time the backing around the power port cracked and broke off and the hinge on the side of the power port started to separate and the numeric pad the 0 key started to stick but all in all I am very happy with it very very highly recommend to get the adh protection and tech support though the geek squad

Good Value, But...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a nice low cost option if you want a 17" screen under $700. The price is basically for the screen size. Hardware it compares to many 15.6" brands/models that have more features, better hardware, better configured. This has what you need to do everything, including light gaming. Things it misses is only 1, 8GB DDR4 2133 ram stick which slows the memory to single channel. The 1 TB hard drive makes it very slow during the 5 minute boot time in stock form! The wifi is an older chip with an incredibly weak max of 72mp/s, while the hard wire option is a full 1G. Out of the box it has an OEM upgraded version of Windows 10 Home which took 3 hours to finish setup. Between that & the weak wi-fi most would return it by now. As a tech, I immediately installed a Samsung 250GB SSD & removed all the "bloatware" this came with. After that, it runs nicely for what it is. An aftermarket wi-fi stick like the Linksys WUSB6300 can get the speed up to 144mb/s. Overall, I predict a high return rate just based on the weak wi-fi & lengthy setup. If you have patience, it's a good deal for a huge screen, HDMI out, USB 3.1, Bluetooth 4.0, & some upgrades will future proof it. Simple in design, easy to work on, a bit pricey if you expect a "turn key" laptop. Expect to wait at least 3 hours for it to finish updating & do remove a ton of "bloatware" to reduce the boot time if you aren't going to put an SSD in. Side note, add another 8GB stick of ram to get dual channel operation.

Perfect for school and on the go gaming!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm very critical of the items I buy, but this laptop has great value. The screen is large and clear... and the viewing angles are acceptable, too. I've used it for a week or so now and it boots up from a cold start in less than 10 seconds. Also, the battery is removable; This is a great feature that many laptops no longer have! I love the matte finish, and I haven't had a single software problem yet. It DOES come with a CD/DVD player that I have used in the car for the kids already. Also, it DOES come with Bluetooth. I play music over my Bluetooth sound system with this laptop every morning. Gaming: I've played Skyrim at 55ish fps at low graphics settings (game resolution set to 720p and rendering distance set to medium for a solid experience). And, I've played games using PS NOW and it works amazingly well on this laptop! (hundreds of Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 games that you can stream, including "The Last of Us"!). I'm not sure if it can stream Xbox One games well or not, but that's something that I will try when I get the chance. It isn't a "gaming powerhouse", but it works great for on the go. Actually, it works better than great... but it's not remarkable. But, graphics look better than an XBOX 360 in almost every instance. And, the PS4 games being streamed though PS NOW look INCREDIBLE (and there is zero to very minimal lag with this). If I had an issue with this product it would be the WiFi card (but it's not an issue for me:); It will connect to 2.4 wireless, but not 5.0 (not a big deal for me, but if it is for you, you could always purchase a separate USB wireless dongle). I'm getting 45Mbps download and 7Mbps upload on the WiFi card right now [but, keep in mind, I do have 100Mbps download service]. When I use my Ethernet cord this laptop maintains a consistent 118Mbps!!! Wow! The keyboard is fantastic, one of the best laptop keyboards that I've ever used. But, I wish that it had a back-light. I purchased this laptop new from Best Buy for $470, and it included a printer (HP Envy 4520) for an extra $30; a great deal for a normally $100 printer that can print through wireless (via the internet with no cords, and it has some other cool features too that I won't go into detail about now). This laptop has met all of my expectations... and that is a VERY rare thing for me to be able to say about a purchase. PS, contrary to what other reviewers have said, you can easily upgrade the ram in this machine to 16gb ddr4. :) And, if you are wondering (as I was before I bought this), this laptop comes with a 8x1 stick of ram, not the preferred 4x2 sticks. But, it still works great!

Too many updates on start see below
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It could've been a 5 star, here's the pro's: 17" HD but not 1080p LED screen, HDMI out, DVD drive, webcam, USB 3.1 ports, 1 USB 2.0, 8GB DDR4, light, long battery life, SD card reader, 10/100/1000 LAN. Cons: Tons of updates due to it being loaded with an upgraded version of Windows 10. Too much "bloatware". After plugging it in the large but super slow 1TB hard drive did many updates, removed all the "bloatware" in about 6 hours. No joke & I do this for a living. That hard drive holds back the i5 in a huge way. So adding a Samsung 500GB SSD to the purchase was worth it. After cloning the completely updated laptop, it boots fully in 10 seconds or so. No joke. Poor WiFi reception/speed due to the limited chip. Has a max of 70 or so mb/s on WiFi. Wired you get the full gig. An adapter got me 144. Other thoughts: For those who want a big screen, light weight for the size, & an optical drive, this is a good way to go. I probably would have went 5 stars had it been "turn key". One shouldn't buy it unless they have hours of patience. They do offer a free set up via Geek squad, but that email came 2 days later. Do buy an SSD like the Samsung or PNY brands to get the best speed & don't need 1TB on a laptop. I would add another 8GB RAM to make it dual channel or upgrade both sticks. A 7th Generation i5 is nice but without the SSD, all that speed is held back. Weak WiFi on a laptop close to the $500 mark is unacceptable. 1080p would've been nice. But not mine anyway, was a gift & they are pleased.

I'm a Happy Camper
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This laptop is lightning fast. I expected it to be sluggish due to the low price, but it exceeded my expectations. I am working on my thesis and wanted it only for writing. However I am doing everything on it. I keep it plugged in so I can't say much about battery life. I love windows 10 with it's amazing features and I purchased Office 2016 for 149.00 and I am good to go. Touch pad is large, keyboard is easy to type on. A great laptop at a great price!

Work Replacement Laptop
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first time I had to purchase a laptop, ever. I have been using Dells at work, but needed to provide a personal laptop to replace the Dell. I choose the HP because of the screen size, the specs (memory, processor, etc.), and the name recognition. So far, everything has been working well. It came with Windows 10, and sometimes applications seemed a little slow to start up compared to what I was used to, but after a few days everything started working as I was used to. Best pros: Faster than old machines, and larger hard drive. Yes, most stuff is saved to the cloud, but having the local storage and being able to install software is much better to me. Also screen size, went from a 15.6 to the 17. Reasonably priced- Picked up for about 500 and some change. Cons- Trying to got used to the keyboard- it is a little different than the Dell keyboard. This is remedied by using a plug in one, so not a big issue. More annoying is the inability to charge my iPhone and iPad while plugged into the wall. The Dell was able to handle this, and see no reason why a laptop 4 years newer cannot do the same thing. I wouldn't not buy it for this reason, but do be aware of it.

Q: QuestionDoes this device really only have wireless N? Hard to imagine given N came out 10 years ago. I thought most laptops in 2017 had at least gone to wireless AC. I'm looking for a new laptop and this one had newer i5 chip but with only wireless N, No way.
Asked by DonS.
- A:Answer The wireless card in this machine is TERRIBLE! I was getting 50mbps on a 100mbps connection. But with the i5 processor, 8gb ram, 1tb hdd, bluetooth, etc. I went ahead and made the purchase. I am very satisfied! I purchased a usb wifi adapter for $16 to combat the horrible factory card, and am now getting 111mbps wirelessly, which rivals my hardwired connection (120mbps). Very easy and cheap fix. Another retailer had a similar laptop with an AC wireless card but an i3 processor for $399. But a usb wifi adapter is cheaper than upgrading a processor, so I went with this unit. Pretty bad of HP to skimp so much on the wireless card in my opinion. Hope this info helps.
