Q: What is the difference between a Chromebook and a regular laptop?
A: A Chromebook is a laptop, but different.. Instead of Windows 10 or Mac OS X, Chromebooks run Google's Chrome OS. These laptops are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents living in the cloud. Chromebook does not have a CD rom/DVD player. But a lot of people use a flash drive or a external HD. It only has a internal storage, Like a cell phone/mp3 player. This is why its a lot faster then most laptops. Don't plan on playing high end games.
Q: 1.5 ghz seems slow, is it slow? Also, do you get any free online storage?
A: Yes the 1.5GHz does look low BUTTT you cant judge a processor by just the clock speed anymore. Its not the old days where Intel's 400 MHz processor is 100 MHz faster than AMD's processor. Processor within the past decade have become much more advance and way more complicated. You now have duel core, quad core, octa core, and even 16 core processors today. Processors today are much more efficient with every clock cycle while using less power and the list just goes on. Anyways this fantastic Chromebook is great for watching YouTube, going on Facebook, online shopping and online gaming, video chatting, listening to music and much more. Please keep in mind this is a CHROMEBOOK NOT a Windows computer. In other words you cant download a regular Windows program we all know and love because this Chrome OS is based off Linux, its simply NOT made to run Windows programs. The Chrome OS is MADE to use very little resources making the overall experience on lower end hardware smooth as butter. Overall if you want or need a Windows laptop, get a Windows laptop but if you wanna give this Chromebook a chance Id say go for it. I did and I sure do love it, Its been fast while staying cool and silent. Also if you do buy this Chromebook or any Chromebook make sure to buy it with 4GB of RAM NOT 2GB because 4GB wont only improve the overall performance but it'll also future proof your machine to. As for the online storage you get 100GB FREE Google drive storage for 2 years and then after 2 years the 100GB storage will go away unless you pay for it after then.
Q: Will this chromebook allow me to pay bills and shop online? Can I go to any website?
A: I bought this chromebook to replace an older laptop. So far I have used it to browse the internet and I have paid several bills with it. It has worked perfectly for my needs. I know it won't be able to do some things like install games that require a Windows operating system, and it doesn't have Microsoft Office products (excel, word, etc.) but google has it's own version of these products that have worked just fine for my limited needs. This chromebook is also much faster and lighter than my old laptop. Also, if you use other google products such as gmail or a chromecast, it syncs perfectly and very easily with them. I'm far from a computer expert, but in my opinion, for someone who just wants to browse the internet, check email, watch youtube, etc, this is just about the perfect product. You get a fast, reasonably priced machine without paying for lots of "stuff" you don't really use and that can bog the machine down. I've been very happy with my chromebook and don't see myself ever going back to a regular laptop. Hope this helps.
Q: Is it possible to upgrade the SSD?
A: It is possible to perform the upgrade, but you'll theoretically void your warranty in so doing. There are a handful of guides that can be found online which provide details on performing the physical install. The short version is that you need only to remove the screws on the back, and then gently pry the case apart to access the drive. I'd recommend watching a YouTube video to be sure you're comfortable with the process. Something important to know is that you'll be VERY limited as to what sort of drive can be used as a replacement. It needs to be an m.2 42mm SSD. As far as I have found, there are only three manufacturers of this type of drive - Transcend, MyDigital and ZTC. Of those, Transcend is the only which is widely known, but many reviews indicate problems with their wake / sleep functionality when installed in Acer Chromebooks. I contacted Transcend technical support, and was assured this has been fixed by a firmware update released in May 2014. (Firmware revision: 20140516.) The Transcend firmware update utility is Windows only and won't run on the Chromebook itself. With that in mind, you may want to be sure you have some way of updating an m.2 SSD's firmware version before you assume that everything will work out of the box.
Q: I also want to know- does this have the IPS display?
A: This Chromebook does, in fact, have the IPS display. It's very clear and I love the way it looks, but do sometimes wish it was a little brighter. I actually spent a lot of time trying to come up with a straight answer as to which of the Acer Chromebook models were IPS. In the end, I learned that reviews (such as this one, ironically) were not a reliable source of information. The best option is to look at the data sheets provided directly on the Acer website as they will detail whether a version has the IPS or regular TFT screen type. It's also worth mentioning that every CB5-571 model is the same, regardless of the last four characters of the model number. (The last four characters seem to only pertain to a specific re-seller.)
Q: Can you download Windows on this laptop?
A: The short answer is that this is a Chromebook and not a standard laptop, so installing Windows is NOT possible. More technically speaking, the BIOS is incompatible with what you'd find on a standard Windows machine, so even starting the install process requires custom firmware and potentially other low level software modifications. That doesn't account for the fact that the SSD is only 16GB and Windows 7, 8 or 10 would use nearly all of that for the install alone. All of that said, if you were just really bored, you could theoretically: 1. Open the machine and upgrade the SSD (voiding your warranty). 2. Install Linux in a chroot environment using something like crouton. 3. Load up some Virtual Machine software such as VirtualBox. 4. Install and run Windows (badly) in a heavily emulated environment. Chromebooks, in general, are built for running ChromeOS (and Linux, if you're a tinkerer). You're likely to have nothing but headaches and disappointment if you try to use them outside of those confines. Hope that helps!
