Ideal UPS Backup Solution-DVR, Modem and Router

I was looking for a reasonably lightweight UPS that would back up my DVR, Cable Modem and Wi-Fi Router in the event of a power failure. I was replacing a Tripp Lite UPS that had failed. I wanted a lighter UPS than the Tripp Lite as it sits in my TV cabinet and I keep adding equipment. Most UPSs weigh more than 25 pounds and this one weighs only 10--perfect. It has several 6 outlets for backup and surge protection and another 3 outlets for surge only. I am only backing up the 3 items noted, the rest, including my TV are plugged into the surge only outlets. The manual states that this UPS would backup a modem and router for about 6 hours, which is great. Having the DVR attached will reduce this time, although I don't know how much. If home when the power failure occurs, I will disconnect my DVR if I know nothing is being recorded--that gives me 6 hours of Wi-Fi to help me from "suffering" through the power failure. I also wanted a new model and this model fitted the bill perfectly-- first made available to consumers in September 2016! This unit has a 3 year warranty and products made by APC are outstanding! I have bought and used several APC products in my lifetime! I identified the specific product I wanted on line and once I decided the UPS I wanted, I checked the Best Buy website, noted it was in stock at my closest Best Buy store (Bloomingdale, IL), then went to the store and bought it--a ten minute process!

Very Good for PS4 in Rest or Play Modes

Due to numerous power blips (i.e. losses of AC power for one second or less) which occur frequently in my area, I lost a the 2TB SSHD in my PS4. This required a new drive as well aa reloading all the games, restoring what saved data I could from the cloud, restoring all my PS4 settings, and so on. This was a lot of trouble and time that I didn't want to repeat. So, I thought that I better get a UPS for the PS4 so that I could continue to use Rest Mode (which is required for automatically uploading of the saved data to the web because I have never been able to do that manually for reasons that I don't yet understand). This unit has enough capacity to sustain the PS4 and other devices during the power blips even when actively playing as well as when in Rest Mode. I no longer worry about this and have had no problems since. As is typical, this unit has some of its outlets spaced for accommodating the wall warts used by many devices. The price, performance, and reputation together resulted in my decision to go with this unit. Using it as I am is very simple and intuitive, and it appears to be well made..

      Returning it

I have 3 other APC backups - my oldest one started clicking so I decided to replace it with this newer design. I have been pleased in the past, but my experience with THIS model was enough that I am returning it this morning and taking the time to review it. Plugging it in, the light blinks - I assume initially it is charging. Hook it up to my computer - the PowerChute program tells me it is working off of battery backup. Researching the blinking light in the paperwork, the pattern is also telling me that it is working off the battery backup. The surge protector portion of the unit worked perfectly fine which tells me it's getting electricity, right? I unplug everything - charge it for over 20 hours - it still blinks (meaning, it's still working off of battery backup) only this morning, the battery is near dead. This sounded enough like TomNC's problem (review on 11/15/16) that I fear it may be a model issue or a bad batch which is why I am taking the time to review it at all - so improvements can be made. Like TomNC, I could not find a 800# to call until I saw his review and APC's response, but the unit is packed back up to be returned. Would have been nice to have that number on the paperwork. I will not be considering this newer design for the replacement.

I chose this UPS because you just can't beat the legendary reliability of APC (American Power Conversion). In my professional career I gained much experience with products manufactured by APC. It just seemed natural to want the same quality and dependability at home, the second unit that I have owned. This UPS offers a generous, higher than most, amp hour battery which equates to longer run time when the power is out. Plenty of outlets are provided, some with wide spacing for plug in power cube supplies. This means that adjacent outlets are not covered by these bulky cubes. Also there are 3 outlets, not connected to back up power for less critical devices. But they are surge suppressor protected. Sensitive electronics are protected by this feature. There are ample outlets eliminating the need for additional power strips. Also there is a LED indicator that your home supply power is proper, no faults present like a missing ground connection. For Windows users, Power Shute software is provided along with an interconnecting cable to your computer to safely automatically power down your machine so your data is preserved. In summary: this is a fine quality UPS with a large capacity battery at a very affordable price point with a great warranty.

I usually purchase APC brand UPS (uninterruptible power supply) units for home office or small business office setup. I've been using this brand for 20 years or so and never had an issue until now with this specific model. Purchased it new, connected the battery, plugged it in to let it power up and start the charging cycle. The next day I heard constant beeping noises that you usually hear when the battery is going bad. sure enough the battery was bad so we took it back to Best Buy for an exchange. Oddly the same thing happened with the exchange units so it could be a defective product. In total, we purchased 2 units and exchanged those 2 units twice so in all we tried 6 units at three different Best Buy stores. All units had the same problem. I ended up using a different retailer and a different brand UPS battery backup with no issues. I gave it one start because I had to otherwise I would not give it any stars. I could not recommend this product based on my experience.

It’s a great concept item if it worked. Everything but large kitchen items are connected to surge protectors.better safe then sorry. According to apc support I’m aloud to connect this unit to a surge protector, so I did. Everything worked fine untill we had a good thunderstorm and the lights just flickered for a split second. The unit starts beeping pretty loud. The reset isn’t blown and the only thing connected to the battery back up unit is a PS4, a modem and router. And yet the unit fried while connected to a rocket fish surge protector of 4800+ jolts That’s also connected to a in wall surge Protector that will handle 5280 jolts. I got the back up surge only to keep my internet running if power went out and to keep my PS4 from randomly restarting with a power flicker so no damage to the system. And the battery unit fried with a flicker that did not even shut off my tv or reset any of the clocks in the kitchen like the oven. If you read this far. Buy a different brand.

Thank you for taking the time to review our unit. I am sorry to hear about the issues you are facing with the unit. I am very concerned that someone from our support team told you that you can plug our UPS into a surge protector. We do not recommend doing this because it can compromise the ground connection which the UPS needs in order to provide adequate surge protection. For more information on this please check out the knowledge base article FA158852 on our support site. Please reach out to us directly at esupport@apc.com at your convenience so we can look into this issue further along with troubleshoot the issue with your UPS. APC

I switched back to APC due to price/wattage rating when my old(other brand) UPS died after 5 years of service. I purchased the Backups 900 BN900M for 99.99.. Hooked everything up and it worked...for 33 days. Now its beyond the return date and I will have to try to get a warranty claim from APC. From reading their website it looks like I will also be on the hook for shipping my 33 day old unit back to them to receive a "refurbished" unit back... so after spending 106.99 with tax and not sure how much shipping will be but its heavy with the battery this bargain is turning out to be not such a great deal. Hopefully if and when I get a replacement back...which Im sure wont be very quick leaving me with no backup power supply for my home phone and internet...It will last longer than a month...guess I should have stayed with the other brand..few dollars more but lasted years.. not a month.

After owning this for only 10 days, I turned on for the first time a printer that was plugged into the "Surge and Battery" portion of the UPS. Suddenly, the entire UPS shut down, causing the computer and monitor to shut down as well. Then the thing began beeping loudly and frequently. I got the beeping to stop somehow, and then I tried the same thing again. Same thing happened. In otrher words, the UPS caused my computer to turn off rather than stopping it from turning off! Then I plugged the printer into the "Surge" portion of the UPS, and tried turning it on again. This time, the printer came on, and the computer and monitor stayed on. Now, I have only two devices plugged into the "Surge and Battery" portion -- the computer and the monitor. I don't have the guts to test the thing by turning off a circuit breaker. I have no trust in this device. I have not called tech support because my overall experience with tech support in general is that it's better for one's blood pressure to regard money as being thrown away rather than try to return things, etc. etc.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We apologize for any inconvenience or frustration this situation caused. We do not typically recommend connecting printers to the battery connected outlets, for the exact reason you described. Printers will draw so much more power when first powered on and while printing, that it can be easy to overload the UPS. I also apologize for any negative experience you have had with our support teams. We do have a dedicated team available you may contact directly at esupport@apc.com. This team provides the best possible customer service experience and can definitely help further troubleshoot this issue if need be. APC
