This microwave was DOA!!
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.Arrived in a box with a lot of extra "security tape" on it for no apparent purpose except suspiciously to seal a box that had been previously opened. As this unit was ordered to replace a similar MW that has very uneven heating, I decided to try it before I installed it in its trim-kit opening. First, I noticed fingerprints all over and no protective film over the buttons. I was obviously not the first buyer to handle this unit. Once plugged it in, I immediately noticed that one of the LED numbers was incomplete. Then I tried to heat some water. The keyboard was dead - no response to touching any button. This unit is going back. To try to keep it from being recycled to another buyer, I wrote "BAD" in black marker on the enclosure. Unfortunately I am limited to this KitchenAid microwave because it has to fit in a location that was constructed for a similiar KA unit that failed after just four years. Not a happy KitchenAid microwave customer!

Works well but disappointed with touchpad quality
||Posted . Owned for 3 months when reviewed.Needed a microwave to fit into the 24" cabinet space to replace an older Kitchen Aid that was rustsing out in the back. Because KA is typically good quality, we decided to stick with the KA. It is powerful, the motor is quieter than the older model. It performs the functions it should and I liked that the options were very similar to my older model. However, after about a month, the keypad started forming bubbles on the numbers which are used most often...just like so many reviews complained about. This is extremely disappointing for a $500 microwave and not at all what I would expect from Kitchen Aid. Shame on me for not listening to the reviews. Unfortunately, I didn't have much choice given the space I was working with...wish I would have purchased the $100 GE and saved my money.

Works well
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. We had a KitchenAid microwave in the house before and all of our other appliances are KitchenAid, so it narrowed it right down when the old one died. (It lasted 12 years). It was also a built in, so we pretty much had to buy the same size, and this is the one that fit the bill. I guess not much has changed in the last 12 years, as it is very similar. I will say it is quieter than the previous one. the buttons seem like you have to push them a bit harder, and when you use the timer it says "end" when done and you have to hit the cancel button to clear it and get the time to show again. Minor, yes, but a bit annoying. Other than that, it works quite well.

I expect more from KitchenAid
||Posted .This microwave looks great and works well. Only drawback is the lifespan of this appliance. This is the THIRD one I have replaced in the past 6 years. We use ours every day and the longest one has lasted has been slightly over two years. I would expect more from a KitchenAid at this price but matches our other appliances.

Not what we expected.
||Posted .Feels cheap, I hope it lasts! I thought Kitchen Aid microwave would be better. The show room did not have a model to look at before we bought it.

for the money, a bit of a disappointment
||Posted .smaller and louder than the original kitchen aid microwave that this replaced. but we felt we needed to stick with kitchen aid for the uniformity of our kitchen appliance set. also, be careful to order the correct trim kit. our salesperson ordered one that was too large given the dimensions provided.

Q: QuestionIf we replace a KCMS185J microwave with KMCS1016GSS, will the trim kit we have - MK1197XHS- fit? Thank you.
Asked by Sue.
- A:Answer The KCMS185J unit has dimensions HxWxD 13 9/16x18 13/16x23 7/8 and the KMCS1016GSS unit has dimensions 13x17 1/4x21 3/4. I could not find the center opening dimensions of your trim kit but it seems from the microwave dimensions that the KMCS1026GSS has smaller size than your original unit. The new unit should fit but will have extra space around the sides and top where you will be able to see into the opening the trim kit is surrounding. The other thing you should consider is the finish of the trim kit compared to the finish of the microwave unit you are considering.

Q: QuestionMy KitchenAid KCMS185JSS-3 release latch just broke and it appears the parts are discontinued. What replacement microwave would have the same dimensions as my old one? It is installed in a cabinet so I need it to fit in the same trim kit if possible.
Asked by cm9901.
- A:Answer The KMCS1016GSS 1.6 cuft microwave is close enough in dimensions (it's 1/4" higher) to fit in the same trim kit as my previous convection model. However, I warn you that I have gone through several "new" units since the convection MW failed. There were problems due to mishandled shipping, sending an inoperative used unit and extremely uneven heating after iinstallation. I'm supposed to be picking up another one tomorrow at Best Buy - this time I will open and test it in their presence!
