If you need to keep it plugged in, store the remote control to prevent accidental activation. You can use weatherstripping, polyurethane foam tape, or other flexible foam insulation materials to seal gaps between the window unit, the window sash, and the window frame. Insulate the accordion-style panels with foam insulation panels if applicable. An outdoor, weatherproof cover can be used to protect the AC unit body from snow, ice, and debris, and you will need to ensure it's securely fastened but allows for ventilation. You can purchase an interior cover to provide an additional layer of insulation and protection, or use foam panels, or use a heavy-duty trash bag secured with duct tape.
