Q: QuestionBuying advice?I am looking to upgrade router to more solid, stable, reliable, strong signal, good constant speed, no need to reboot, future proof for say ~8years, router. I only have 8-10 devices and 25mbps Comcast connection. I want to upgrade connection to 75mbps and upgrade modem to Arris SB6183, and upgrade router to maximize new situation for long term. Is this X8-ac5300 router my best choice? Is it lot better than X6-ac3200 and other ac5300 and ac3200 routers on market (i.e. ASUS)? Is hardware and firmware really up to speed so I don't have to replace it for long time? I am concerned with some bad reviews regarding need to reboot often and firmware bugs? I appreciate your thoughts.

• A:Answer I recently reviewed the same routers and saw the same reviews as you did. However i saw the date they posted their review and the went to netgear's website and from there you can see when they patched the bugs with firmware updates. They have since patched them. I bought mine last month and have never had any problems and have never had to reboot it. The main reason i went with the X8 was that it had faster data transfer rates for WiFi and really to best reason was that it had 6 switching ports. I ran Cat 5e cables through my house because if you truly want the fastest possible speeds, you need to run ethernet cable. WiFi will never be able to beat the data transfer rates of ethernet and since i ran cable, i went with the 6 port to give my more wires to run.

• A:Answer The answer is yes. I have comcast and just set up this very router and it works great. However check with Comcast to make sure your modem is compatible with the Nighthawk X8. I'd recommend a DOCSYS 3.0, but should be at least DOCSYS 2.0 modem and buy your own modem. The rental fee on a modem from Comcast is more per year than the fastest and best modems on the market you can buy out right. Hope this helpful...good luck.

Q: QuestionHotspotCan you use this router to connect to a Sprint Hotspot device for you internet connection?

• A:Answer Although I don't know the specific Hotspot device you have nor the specs on it I did a quick Internet search of sprint hot spot devices. I didn't find any that had ano ethernet port to pass service on to the router. It also requires modem configuration and the hotspot devices can't be configured for pass through and shutting off WiFi on them which is required so the two don't conflict. So the short answer is No.

• A:Answer If your question is: Can I use my OLD router (that's also a modem) "AS my modem" with my new 8500? Yes! (Provided your old modem still works with/from your ISP, that is.) Many things have changed though over the past 5 years - and in MY situation in order for our area ISP to increase our speeds to > 80Mb/s, the modems needed to be replaced. So don't stick a very old modem on your network unless your ISP says it'll still work and will still work FAST ENOUGH with any upgrades they may have done. Mind you, your fastest speed(s) are ALWAYS as fast as your slowest link - so if your "old" router/modem is THAT old, it'll likely _appear_ your new 8500 is slowing down your network when it's actually due to you're using a very old device that (likely) has a processor in it way back when 1.5Mb/s was having a FAST Internet connection!!! (I won't mention my age, but my 1st 1.5Mb/s symmetrical link cost $1250 PER MONTH and was using a modem/switch built for 10Mb/s Ethernet.) Yikes. Hope that helps!

• A:Answer The Netgear Nighthawk X8 is a WiFi router, and not a cable modem (which you would still need). The cable modem is the only device that must be compatible with the cable company. Thus, the X8 would work fine with any Internet service provider.

• A:Answer The Netgear Nighthawk X6 and X8 both have 2.4 gHz and 5 gHz signals. The,5 gHz signal is better for streaming, but has more limited range than the older 2.4 gHz signal. You can verify and make these setting changes within the set-up menu.
